HBO celebrates 10 years of Game of Thrones with Iron Anniversary, trying to win back fans disappointed by the series finale with advertising campaigns and spin-off series

2021 is the year that marks the 10th anniversary de Game of Thrones, award-winning — to some extent — HBO television series based on the books The Chronicles of ice and Fire, by George RR Martin. To commemorate this milestone, HBO launched a celebration called iron anniversary — Iron Anniversary, in free translation, which will last for a month. The tribute began on the 10th of April and should last until the 10th of May, in an attempt to rescue disappointed fans and win over a new generation of enthusiasts, especially considering that several spin-off's are being produced by the broadcaster. 22393t

It's no secret that the eighth season of Game of Thrones was received by fans and critics alike as a catastrophe. Of course, it has to be argued that the series hasn't been at its best since season five, but I imagine few expected such a… weird, to say the least. It wasn't the first or last time that a successful series has slipped up and sunk into its own greed — just look at the example of Lost — but what is striking is that HBO does not dropped the bone, so to speak.

Also, why would you leave? Despite the discredit, GoT was one of the most successful franchises of the network and became a worldwide phenomenon. No wonder, some derivative series have already been speculated and one of them even confirmed. House of the Dragon, or The Dragon House, in free translation, will have as its context 300 years before the history we know, dealing with the domain of the house Targaryen about Westeros. Production has already started and the network hopes that the new chapter of the GoT hits television in 2022.

Besides House of the Dragon, there are rumors of at least 4 other series in development, each in a different period. The most promising of these is perhaps the story of Ser Duncan the Tall, commander of the Royal Guard who takes the then Crown Prince Aegon Targaryens, nicknamed Egg, on a journey to meet the people of the Seven Kingdoms. To make a parallel, in the original series, the Lord Commander of the Kingsguard is, first of all, Ser Barristan Selmy, the Bold, and then Ser Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer. As for Egg, the only link we have is his brother, the Maester of the Night's Watch, Aemon Targaryens.

Despite this, there is not much additional information. Personally, I believe that the series follows a model similar to The Mandalorian, recent success of the streaming Disney +. Despite the obvious differences, the similarities cannot be overlooked: a formidable and famous warrior accompanying a small creature on its journey of learning. What does change, however, is that there are no desperate bounty hunters after Prince Egg. Or is there? Read the book if you're curious and don't want to wait for the series. Enjoy the Iron Anniversary of Game of Thrones to find out.

O Iron Birthday, as it was called by HBO, is a month to celebrate 10 years of Game of Thrones. Upon entering the broadcaster's website, we see that the streaming HBO Max is promoting a marathon — creatively called MaraThrone, in an infamous pun on the name of the series — a little different. Different because, first of all, the network is encouraging fans to donate to at least one of the ten non-profits featured on the site. Are they:

  • Women for Women International;
  • World Central Kitchen;
  • Conservation International;
  • The Trevor Project;
  • International Rescue Committee;
  • UNICEF;
  • FilmAid International;
  • SameYou;
  • Royal Mencap Society;
  • National Urban League.

Who am I to question why a multi-million-dollar network would suggest that fans donate their earnings to social causes when, well, it can do it in a much more impactful way, can't it? Anyway, the MaraThrone from HBO also offers subscribers the ability to choose up to 6 different routes to watch the series. Although this seems like the plot of a light novels, the routes are as follows:

  • Welcome to Westeros: classic marathon, going from the first episode of the first season to the last of the eighth;
  • Combat MaraThrone: marathon whose objective is the best combats (one-on-one or general) of the series, such as Battle of the Bastards, Battle of the Blackwater, Hardhome, Oberyn vs The Mountain, Hound vs Brienne etc;
  • Path of Fire and Blood: Follow Daenerys' best moments throughout the entire series;
  • A collection has no name: similar to the previous one, the best appearances of Arya Stark;
  • ice walk: see the rise and fall of Westeros' second greatest enemy, the White Walkers;
  • a spoiled walk: my favourite, relive the stinging pain of the show's most shocking episodes.

Brazilian fans, however, have a sad realization: the HBO Max has not yet arrived (the debut of the streaming in Latin America is scheduled for June), which means that none of this can be done officially. Just access the website dedicated to the series, however, that the episode list for each route will be available — and you can watch them on the HBO GO platform, available by subscription or for subscribers of HBO packages on Brazilian TV operators. And for God's sake, if you've never watched an episode, don't go route 6. Especially when it's time for season 9 episode XNUMX, known and feared by fans as Red marriage.

In addition to these small treats, HBO also prepared physical gifts for some digital influencers who have followed these last 10 years of Game of Thrones. Not that anyone will win that in Brazil — would that be my dream? — but it's good to know that at least some people are enjoying it. An interesting action is that, according to the release, three couples who had a wedding-themed wedding GoT will receive special gifts, such as personalized wine barrels, personalized goblets and cakes made by a bakery in partnership with the station.

The 10 years of Game of Thrones and Iron Birthday also catapulted some special quality products, like a jeweled egg made by the famous Fabergé — responsible for the eggs of the Russian monarchy in the last and last centuries —, themed craft beers produced by the Danish Mikkeller and funkos (those little dolls) special from the series.

Attempt to recover the damage done or advertising strategy? 5h4d4r

Game of thrones season eight episode
The battle itself wasn't too bad. The lighting, the writers' lack of courage to kill half of the characters and the ending, on the other hand, marked the last 10 years of Game of Thrones in a negative way. (Image: HBO)

It seems quite clear that the two points mentioned in the subtitle above are related, doesn't it? This is not always the case, however, as a company repairing the damage done by a particular product usually only happens when there is a loss of money involved. On the contrary, even with the negative reaction from the audience, HBO profited considerably from the series, so there was no reason to try to recover that damage, even with an online petition from more than a million subscribers for the reworking of the finale.

The big problem with this is that the series was practically forgotten after 2019, the premiere year of the eighth season. Little is read about her on the internet — at best, we are happy to recognize an actor whose fame comes from there doing well out there, as is the case with Pedro Pascal, who played Oberyn Martell and became the biggest daddy of the series currently in The Mandalorian. It is curious to think that, in the 10 years of Game of Thrones, the books still generate so much discussion and theorization by fans, unlike the series, which was forgotten.

Afraid of losing those interested in the universe of ice & fire, HBO bets on these memories of 10 years of Game of Thrones so that the results are collected in the form of audience in the new series. Now, honestly, if the network was already cutting back on battles and the like and decreasing the appearance of dragons for the same reason, how they will handle a history full of these mythical creatures is beyond my knowledge. At least George RR Martin will oversee the scripts going forward, something that David Benioff and DB Weiss didn't do.

In the meantime, we readers hope that George doesn't die before the books are finished, a hope that grows more unlikely every day.
