According to information from the MetSouth, the heat wave has already begun, affecting mainly the South and Southeast of Brazil, with atypically high temperatures for the month of November, a period that is already historically hot, but which, in 2023, could see records broken.

Until Friday (10), the most intense heat should be concentrated in the Central-West and in the interior of São Paulo, but from the weekend onwards the mass of hot air increases and the maximum temperatures begin to reach more areas of Brazil , just as it was in September and October.

The main states that will deal with the heat wave will be the Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Mato Grosso, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Goiás e Federal District, with the worst temperatures being recorded in the South and Interior of SP, which could reach marks above 40ºC. This temperature will bring risks to the inhabitants of the affected areas, and it is recommended to reinforce general hydration and stay in well-ventilated places to reduce damage.

Furthermore, temperatures are expected to intensify even further in the week of November 13th, with the entire week continuing to see unusual metrics for a prolonged period — presenting even more health risks for residents of the main affected regions.

This phenomenon occurs due to a heat bubble, also called a heat dome (heat dome), which is created when an area of high pressure remains in the same place for a prolonged period, trapping very hot air underneath, much like a lid on a pan. The phenomenon had already occurred other times in Brazil, with the most recent being in October this year.

Temperature forecasts for Brazil's main capitals during the extreme heat wave are as follows:

  • Curitiba: forecast of intense heat with temperatures reaching 45°C;
  • Piauí: above 40°C;
  • Macapa: minimum of 25°C and maximum of 34°C;
  • Manaus: minimum of 28°C and maximum of 34°C;
  • Savior: the maximum should be 29°C;
  • Fortress: the maximum should be 32°C;
  • Victory: minimum of 20°C and maximum of 34°C;
  • Goiania: minimum of 21°C and maximum of 38°C;
  • Maranhao: minimum of 26°C and maximum of 32°C;
  • Mato Grosso: minimum of 28°C and maximum of 42°C;
  • Belo Horizonte: minimum of 25°C and maximum of 42°C;
  • Minas Gerais: the temperature must be 36°C;
  • Rio de Janeiro: thermometers can reach 40°C;
  • Sao Paulo: The temperature must reach 39,5°C;
  • Federal District: minimum of 15°C and maximum of 32°C.

With this heat wave, some historical temperature records in Brazil may fall, as in the case of the state of São Paulo. In the interior, for example, MetSul predicts temperatures above 40ºC, while in the capital it is predicted to fluctuate between 37ºC and 39ºC. For comparison, the hottest day ever recorded in the city of São Paulo since data recording began in 1943 was 37,8ºC, in 2014, and now the temperature could be sured with this atypical wave.

According to the MetSul institute, the most frequent occurrence of heat domes is a result of global warming. Currently, the five highest temperatures recorded in Brazil are the following:

  • Belém (PA): 45 ºC, on 22/12/2005;
  • Salvador (BA): 45 ºC, on 21/06/2007;
  • Rondonópolis (MT): 45 ºC, on 26/09/2008;
  • Afonso Cláudio (ES): 45 ºC, on 02/03/2012;
  • Gilbués (PI): 45 ºC, on 04/09/2018;
  • Nova Maringá (MT): 44,9 ºC, on 03/03/2010, and 44,8 ºC, on 05/11/2020;
