Carried out annually since 2005, the survey Household ICT focuses on analyzing the number of people connected to the internet and how connectivity is being used on a daily basis. For the year 2023, researchers collected data from 23.975 households and 21.271 individuals, between March and July 2023.

The research was done by Regional Center for Studies for the Development of Society and everyone who responded was 10 years old or older. The focus is to show data and statistics about the development of the internet network in Brazil so that companies and governments can make significant changes.

In 2022, the research Household ICT pointed out that 80% of Brazilian homes were connected to the internet, with a total of 36 million Brazilians without full access to what is posted online.

For the year 2023, this number is 84% and currently 29 million people are still not connected to the internet. Despite all the advances and availability of more resources, urban areas still have 24 million non-internet s. Of these, 17 million declared themselves black or mixed race and 17 million belong to classes DE.

This data shows that residents of peripheral areas still have difficulties connecting to the internet, even living in large capitals. This is because people without internet only had elementary education; 16 million people without internet are aged 60 or over, a figure greater than the sum of the other age groups.

Despite the decline, the number of disconnected Brazilians is still worrying. While many activities and services are available exclusively or preferably online, not having access to the Internet means being excluded from countless opportunities.

The smartphone was the choice of 99% of those interviewed, and television comes in second place as the device through which people connect to the internet, with 58% of Brazilians responding. The computer comes next, with 42%.

It is important to note that 58% of people exclusively use their cell phone to connect to the internet. 41% of people use a computer and a smartphone and 87% of people who belong to classes DE use only their cell phone, with 12% of them using both.

The study also shows that the exclusive use of smartphones is higher among women (64%), as men reached 52%. The number among blacks and browns (64%) is also higher than among whites (49%).

Among Brazilians who use their smartphones to connect to the internet, 60% have a prepaid internet plan and 36% have a postpaid internet plan. 97% of those in class A are able to know what is happening in the virtual world, both via Wi-Fi and mobile networks. In the DE classes, 36% of respondents use the internet only via Wi-Fi and 11% use the mobile network (3G/4G/5G).

“This year, we once again observed an increase in connectivity in the country. But TIC Domicílios also shows that the quality of this access is still unequal
among the population, which restricts the development of digital skills and full enjoyment of the benefits that the Internet has to offer.

Podcast consumption has grown in Brazil (Photo: Reproduction/Shutterstock)

Podcast consumption increased by 7% compared to 2021; 29% of people who have access to the internet follow at least one program. In 2010, the percentage was 10% and the most interesting thing is that Brazilians prefer national productions: only 7% have the habit of listening to foreign podcasts.

Talking about the consumption of videos through streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, there was a growth from 38% to 45% when comparing 2021 to 2023. Video sharing sites such as TikTok and YouTube are still preferred by who uses the internet, being the option of 54% of those interviewed.

The top 3 is completed by music video sites (50%) and news sites (48%). Among the themes, videos of religious events or programs reached 34%, an increase of 7% compared to the survey carried out in 2021.

And what about purchases and services? 51b3e

73% of s with internet access over the age of 16 have used an online service from the Brazilian government (Photo: Disclosure)

At least 50% of Brazilians who have access to the internet have made purchases online in the last 12 months, a number that is equivalent to 78 million people. The number recorded remains within the margin of error of the 2022 survey, but shows that online shopping has become a tradition for those who use the internet in Brazil, also being above what was seen before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The ICT Households survey identifies emerging themes and new trends, always in line with sustainable social development guidelines. It is an essential reference source for the elaboration of public policies and for qualified debate on the socioeconomic impacts of Internet access and use in Brazilian society.

Renata Mielli, coordinator of CGI.br.

Finally, it was announced that 73% of s with internet access over the age of 16 used an online service from the Brazilian government, an increase of 8% compared to 2022.

An interesting fact is that between 2021 and 2023, the online tax payment service grew, without the need to go to a bank, lottery or Federal Revenue agency to resolve demands that can be made at home. This shows that the work of these bodies is having an effect and people who have access to the internet trust platforms that save time.

Public bodies have been increasing the provision of services
digital technologies, as shown in the ICT Electronic Government survey. The increase in the number of people accessing public services via the Internet in 2023 is positive for both citizens and governments.
