The report on digital scams reveals alarming data regarding cybersecurity in Brazil. According to the Political Panorama Survey 2024, 24% of Brazilians claim to have lost money in the last 12 months in at least one online scam, such as card cloning, internet fraud or bank hacking. This survey, conducted by the Research Institute DateSenate in partnership with Nexus — Research and Data Intelligence, from FSB Holding, interviewed 21.808 Brazilians aged 16 or over between June 5 and 28, 2024, being the largest opinion poll on the subject carried out in Brazil. 113c4t

The research showed that, in a national comparison, the states of Ceará (17%) and Piauí (18%) had the lowest rates of reports of digital scams in the last 12 months. At the other end of the spectrum, among the leading states in digital scams are São Paulo (29%) and Rio de Janeiro (27%). In the other federative units, the distribution is uniform, considering the margins of error. This data indicates that, although there are regional variations, digital scams are a widespread problem in the country.

The profile of victims of digital scams in Brazil closely reflects the socioeconomic characteristics of the general population. For example, 51% of victims have a family income of up to two minimum wages, a rate very close to the 49% observed in the Brazilian population as a whole. This suggests that vulnerability to cybercrime is not restricted to a specific group, but is a problem that affects society broadly.

Data on the level of education of victims show that people with completed secondary education are the most affected, representing 35% of victims.. This can be explained by the fact that this group is large and is strongly involved in the job market and in the use of digital services, which increases their exposure to possible fraud. Next are those with incomplete higher education or more, who represent 29% of victims.. This group is also highly digitally active, which may explain the high incidence of scams.

When analyzing age groups, the highest incidence of victims is among young people aged 16 to 29, who represent 27% of victims., coinciding with the proportion of this group in the general population. This data can be explained by the fact that young people tend to be more connected and use more digital services, thus increasing their exposure to fraud. On the other hand, people aged 60 or over, who make up 20% of the population, represent 16% of victims of digital scams. Although this age group is less represented among victims, a significant portion of older people are still affected, which highlights the need for specific protection measures for this group.

For José Henrique Varanda, research coordinator and analyst at DateSenate, the survey is crucial to understanding the extent of cybercrimes among the Brazilian population. He believes that this data can serve as a basis for the development of proposals and public policies that aim to increase digital security and reduce the incidence of scams. A detailed understanding of the victims’ profile allows for better targeting of prevention and education actions, ensuring that all segments of the population are better protected against these crimes.

Virtual scams have become increasingly frequent and sophisticated, impacting a significant portion of Brazilians. The data allows for a broad diagnosis, which can point to possible solutions for preventing and addressing this problem.

Digital scams have a significant impact on the Brazilian economy, affecting both victims’ personal finances and the macroeconomic environment. With 24% of Brazilians reporting financial losses due to cybercrime, the economy suffers from reduced purchasing power and consumer confidence. These individual losses, when added together, represent a substantial amount that could have been invested in goods and services, boosting economic growth.

The high incidence of digital fraud also affects consumer confidence in using digital and banking services. Distrust can lead to lower adoption of financial technologies, limiting the potential for innovation and growth in the fintech and e-commerce sectors. Businesses that rely on online transactions may face additional challenges in attracting and retaining customers, which could result in a slowdown in economic growth and a loss of competitiveness in the global market. Thus, a lack of trust in the digital environment can therefore constrain economic development and the modernization of the financial sector.
