Carnival will be earlier in 2024 5l4o5s
In 2023 the Carnival it was on February 21st, closer to the end of the month, allowing for a longer pre-carnival period — when the blocks take to the streets in smaller parades, in preparation for the big festivities. Already in 2024, the date falls on February 13 — 8 days before, reducing the pre-carnival period by one week. But how is the date chosen?
Carnival does not have a fixed date and can take place in February or March. The festival has its origins in the Catholic religion, and establishes the beginning of the Lent — the 40-day period preceding the Good friday, before Sunday Easter Holiday. This means that it is Easter that establishes when Carnival will take place, and it depends on the lunar calendar.
A Easter Holiday, in turn, always occurs on a Sunday — specifically the first Sunday after the first full moon of the Autumnal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere, a moment that marks the beginning of Autumn and which occurs on March 20th. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, consider the Spring Equinox.
