The cable TV channel ABC Family ordered, Shadowhunters, a 13-episode series based on the franchise bestseller Juvenile The Mortal Instruments, by the writer Cassandra clare. Shadowhunters will follow Clary Fray, an 18-year-old girl who discovers she belongs to a long line of Shadow Hunters, hybrids of angels and humans who hunt demons and other magical creatures. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary finds herself involved in a hunt with the mysterious Shadow Hunter Jace and his best friend Simon. She is then thrown into a world of supernatural creatures, including sorcerers, vampires, werewolves and fairies.
The Mortal Instruments was originally planned as a series of films, but after the relative failure of the first film, which reached only $31 million in US theaters, production on the second film was suspended. Last October followed the announcement, by the German producer Constantin Film, the same as the film, that the franchise would be relaunched as a high-budget television series.
It is not yet known if Shadowhunters will keep the cast of the film. The only name attached to the project so far is that of Ed Decter (Helix, Unforgettable) who will be the creator and executive director of the series that will begin production in Toronto in May. There is no release date yet.
