After the WWDC, Apple's developers conference, the rumors that the next generation of the iPhone should be announced only in September of this year were confirmed (until now the new versions have always been announced at the WWDC itself).
With more time until the reveal of the iPhone 5 news, the rumors are getting more and more frequent, but not always more accurate. Below, the Show Me Tech team takes a look at the most frequent rumors about the iPhone 5 and looks at what it really should be:
Design: “Updated” iPhone 4 x Total Revolution
The first point of contention between the rumors lies in the design of the iPhone 5. Is it just an iPhone 4 with some updates, as was the update from 3G to 3GS? Or will there be a total renovation of the smartphone, as happened from the 3GS to the 4?
The iPhone 4 is already a great engineering feat. Thin, beautiful, tough and extremely powerful in of processing and battery life. So, there's not much reason for Apple to tear up such a successful project to present a completely revamped iPhone. The iPhone 5 will likely be an improved iPhone 4, perhaps thinner, with slightly modified antennas to solve the Antennagate problem, but don't expect a revolution.
SMT opinion: iPhone 5 will be an updated iPhone 4 in of design
Camera: 5 mpx x 8 mpx / Flash away from lens x Flash beside lens
As for the camera, some rumors insist that the resolution of the iPhone 5's (great) 4 megapixel camera will be maintained, while others suggest that there will be a resolution 8 megapixels, to compete with current competitors running Android and Nokia, some already bringing sensors of up to 12 megapixels.
Still on the camera, much has been speculated about the cause of the delay of the white iPhone 4 being due to the positioning of the camera's flash, which would cause light leakage and damage the photos. On the heels of these rumors, they soon began to speculate that the iPhone 5's flash would be on the other side of the back, instead of right next to the lens, including some covers having been “leaked” with this new configuration.
At this point, it's really good for Apple to invest in an upgrade, as the competition, as we said, is already breaking the 12 mpx barrier. While camera quality is not directly related to how many pixels it captures, it is difficult to convince an average consumer that a 5 mpx camera is better than a 12 mpx one.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will feature an 8 mpx camera, and the flash will be moved away from the lens.
Processor: Single Core x A5 Dual-Core x Quad-Core
If there is one point where most rumors converge, it is regarding the iPhone 5's processor. Almost everyone is betting that the smartphone will come with the A5 Dual-Core processor that already equips the iPad 2. Some, however, raise the hypothesis that Apple may already bring in this version a processor with four cores, not yet announced, possibly replacing Samsung, the current supplier.
Most iPhone competitors today come equipped with dual-core processors, making this Apple's most likely choice. A quad-core processor seems like too much, as it would require all iOS reengineering to take advantage of the processing power, which shouldn't happen before dual-core processors are showing exhaustion.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will have a dual-core A5 processor, the same as the iPad 2
Screen: Current 3.5″ x 4″ x Two models with different size screens
If about the iPhone 5 processor the rumors are almost unanimous, when it comes to the gadget's screen the story completely changes the situation.
While many are betting on maintaining the current screen, with its 3.5″, several rumors indicate that Apple would be willing to increase the iPhone display to compete with the beastly Androids up to 4.5″. Some kick minimal increase, to 3.7″, others significant increase to 4″. Some, more courageous, even say that Apple will launch iPhones with two different screen sizes, one similar to the current one and the other smaller, “mini”.
Although the iPhone's screen is outdated and can be considered small compared to most competitors, it's hard to believe that Apple will make drastic changes in size, as this reflects across the entire development platform for iOS, one of the pillars of the iPhone's success. iPhone. The rumor of two versions is entirely unlikely.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will have a screen of 3.7″, a little bigger than the current one, going practically from edge to edge laterally.
Single GSM/CDMA Model
Today there are two different models of iPhone, one GSM and one CDMA. Rumors are betting that the iPhone 5 will have a chip capable of ing both technologies, in the same model.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will still have two different versions for GSM and CDMA, as indicated by codes found in the iOS 5 SDK, with references to two different models.
Absence of SIM Card / Internal Chip
Another recurring rumor concerns an Apple patent for a GSM phone model without a SIM Card, or with an internal, configurable SIM Card. It seems unlikely that Apple will be able to convince operators to adopt this new model.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will have a SIM Card tray like the iPhone 4 and earlier.
New Features
NFC
Many are betting that the next iPhone will Near Field Communications technology, for mobile payments, connection to accessories and so on. Although this technology is already present in some Androids, it is still too incipient to come to the iPhone 5. As we know, Apple tends to leave new technologies aside until they are mature enough to provide an excellent experience.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will not NFC technology.
3D
Like NFC, 3D technology is still very new, and the implementation examples we have today are quite questionable in of quality. It is almost certain that 3D will not appear on the iPhone 5 and, most likely, not the next ones, until it reaches a higher stage of development.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will not 3D technology, either in camera or on screen.
for 4G networks
Although it doesn't make much difference for us Brazilians, at least at this first moment, in the American market, for new technologies for online data transmission is already a great differential. Several of the current devices already have the ability to connect to high-speed networks called 4G by operators.
This is still a very hazy point for the next iPhone, but Apple is expected to bring for at least some new 4G network technologies.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will 4G networks.
Release date: August vs September?
Some bet on the iPhone 5 in August, others in September. Given the release date of iOS 5 (iPhone 5 will only come with the new version of the system), promised for the end of September, it seems to us that the information of an August release is unfounded.
SMT opinion: The iPhone 5 will be released in late September or early October.
