The game is the newest title in the franchise. Animal Crossing, fifth game among the main titles in the series (eighth if we also count the spin-offs franchise) and the first to be released for the Nintendo Switch.

According to Metacritic (a site that aggregates all the reviews for a particular game, movie or TV series, and then creates an overall average score based on all those reviews), the new game in the franchise has a score of 91 (out of a maximum of 100) , thus being the title with the highest average of the entire franchise – which is a good indication that this is, potentially, the best Animal Crossing already released.
And the same success can also be seen in sales: even though it was only released on Friday (20), the game was last week's best seller in the UK. The exact numbers have not been revealed, but it is known that New Horizons sold 3,5 times more than Animal Crossing: New Leaf, a game for the 3DS that until then had the best launch week of the entire franchise.
But the amount of sales was so great that New Horizons not only beat the previous title, but became the second best-selling game at launch in the history of the Nintendo Switch, behind only the numbers of Pokémon Sword e Pokémon Shield (which for the purposes of classification by Nintendo are considered as a single game, but if you separate the number of sales for each one the new Animal Crossing becomes the best-selling title at launch in Switch history).
Not only that, but this rating only takes into the game's physical sales in the UK. Considering that a good part of the world is in quarantine, it is possible that direct sales through Nintendo's online store were even higher, but the company rarely discloses these numbers, so we will possibly never know exactly how much the game sold in total numbers.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons can now be purchased directly from the Switch itself at Nintendo eShop, and can also be found in physical media in the main stores in the industry.
