What are the best horror movies for you? The titles that love to put sequences of jump scare for your heart to come out of your mouth or those that build a very tense psychological atmosphere? There are thousands of possibilities within the genre and, over time, it ends up being challenging to create a work that surprises horror fans – even more so taking into the fact that what scares each one is totally relative and individual. 6m5713
While the biggest nightmare for some is the plot of Run!, for others what catches more are the supernatural forces and the combo Paranormal activity, Spirits, Evil Invocation and so on. There is the horror niche with touches of humor as well, which, despite being able to cut the full tension at times, often serves as an impetus for the worst visceral act to come.
This list includes everything from classic works to the best thrillers released recently – and, of course, the underrated ones that deserved more attention. This guide to the horror universe will follow a chronological order, but you can scroll down to see what’s currently playing in theaters and on streaming services.
The Office of Dr. Caligari (1920) c5x45
Original title: Das Cabinet des Dr. caligari
96% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8,0 on IMDb

Under the direction of Robert Wiene, this classic became a landmark of expressionism in German cinema. Amidst the horror and frightening narrative, Wiene creates a world full of possibilities and the realization of many nightmares, mainly exploring the insanity of his characters – which can be a pleasant surprise for new audiences.
The story is developed through flashbacks and is based on the story of the young man Franzis (Friedrich Feher), whose sanity is shaken when he discovers the evil plan of the doctor and hypnotist Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) – that uses Cesare (Conrad Veidt), a sleepwalker, to commit murders.
Nosferatu (1922) 5c2x3w

Original title: Nosferatu, the Symphonie des Grauens
97% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,8 on IMDb

This unauthorized German adaptation of Dracula de StokerDirected by FW Murnau, was decisive in the visual exploration of vampire stories and in the consolidation of the genre, which previously only inhabited the imagination of fans and authors. Even if you haven't (yet) seen this film, the emblematic figure of Max schreck , the Count Orlock became a great popular reference.
in the plot, Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) travels to the Carpathians to sell a castle owned by the Count Orlock (Schreck), a vampire who goes to Bremen and spreads terror. The one who can reverse this situation is Ellen (Greta Schröder), Hutter's wife, as Orlock is in love with her.

In the Loneliness of the Night (1945) 58361c

Original title: Dead of Night
95% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,5 on IMDb
Where to watch: Currently unavailable
The anthology feature was the first horror film to be shown in the UK after years of censorship during World War II through the British Board of Film Censors (British Council of Film Censors, in free translation). And between us, he resurrected terror in a big way.
In this film, some people are invited to spend a weekend in the countryside. There, they decide to share supernatural stories, starting with Walter Craig (Mervyn John). As soon as he starts telling his nightmares, a series of five short horror films begins, with participation in the script by HG Wells and direction of three different directors, namely Basil Dearden, Charles Crichton e Alberto Cavalcanti — yes, we have a Brazilian representative!
Silence in the Dark (1946) 5f1e1c

Original title: The Spiral Staircase
86% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,3 on IMDb
Where to watch: plex
This is a film that has aged poorly due to its premise and would probably be written off by many people. The serial killer's proposal is to "end the imperfections of the world" and go after disabled women. The film was made from the killer's perspective, so we follow his gaze towards his next victim - who in this case is Helen (Dorothy McGuire), a young mute maid.
The killer is so intolerant of people he deems imperfect that he ends up literally seeing them differently. Helen, for example, he visualizes a face completely without a mouth – like that scene in The Matrix in which Neo (Keanu Reeves) “loses” his.
The proposal focused on making an allusion to the Nazi persecution of people with mental and physical disabilities. The film was created a year after the Second World War ended and the director himself Robert Siodmack had to flee Nazism because he was part of Judaism. The result was a gothic horror film for a population that was still recovering from the massive violence it had suffered.
The Devil's Messenger (1955) l413o

Original title: The Night of the Hunter
93% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8,0 on IMDb
Where to watch: Prime Video e AppleTV +
Em The Devil's Messenger, a religious fanatic marries a widow whose young children are reluctant to tell him where their real father hid the $10.000 he stole. From this premise, the film becomes one of the best thrillers of persecution, offering much more than a real horror film. To emphasize the nightmare that children are suffering from this fanatic, the director Charles Laughton works with images from fairy tales, as if we were following a story from animation — with the addition of recurring terror.
Night Vampire (1958) 2wb1j
Original title: horror of dracula
89% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,2 on IMDb
Where to watch: Currently unavailable
In the film of Terence Fisher, Peter cushing star like Doctor Van Helsing, a determined man who is eternally after Dracula. Their final confrontation was much more inspired by Nosferatu than in the 1931 version of Dracula, and can be considered one of the greatest climaxes in any horror film: a breathless convergence of the physicality of Christopher Lee in the role of the vampire and some makeup effects ahead of their time.
The Faceless Eyes (1960) f1p5y

Original title: Les yeux sans visage
97% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,6 on IMDb

In the French plot of Georges to Francis, a father, who is also a plastic surgeon, becomes obsessed with saving the appearance of his daughter - who in turn suffered an accident and ended up having her face disfigured. The only solution the father finds is to perform a facial transplant. To do so, he is willing to kill women to steal their faces. However, his daughter's body rejects the skin grafts and ends up bringing yet another layer of pure terror to the screen.
Psychosis (1960) 4b6s6g
Official title: Psycho
97% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8,5 on IMDb
Where to watch: Telecine e AppleTV +
We arrived at one of the greatest references in cinema in general and in the horror film genre. We can even rely on the chronology of thriller basing it on “aP” (before Psycho) and dP (after Psycho). Considering, of course, the narrative, the format of the film and all the innovations that Alfred Hitchcock proposed to risk doing it.
Hitchcock recorded Psychosis with the team from his TV show “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, with the Paramount logo and everything, simulating a television work as a way of playing with formats and erasing the fine line between cinema and TV.
In the film, after stealing $40 to marry her boyfriend, a woman flees during a storm and decides to spend the night in a hotel she finds along the way. She meets the polite and temperamental owner of the establishment, Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins), a young man with an interest in taxidermy and a troubled relationship with his mother. What seems like a simple stay at the place turns into a true night of terror.
The Village of the Damned (1960) 2c47
Original title: Village of the Damned
93% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,3 on IMDb
Where to watch: AppleTV +
What if children are not actually our future? The director Wolf Rilla poses this question in the most bizarre way possible in this horror film. In the English village of Midwich, the professor George Sanders (Gordon Zellaby) goes through a somewhat different situation. His wife and other women who followed the same pattern were impregnated by extraterrestrial forces.
Even knowing the risky situation and having a negative intuition, Sanders decides to give the benefit of the doubt to the children born from this event. But certain paranoias that we put aside are not always unfounded. The teacher ends up discovering firsthand that everything tends to get worse.

The Birds (1963) 1w6g4c
Original title: The Birds
94% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,6 on IMDb
Where to watch: Prime Video e AppleTV +
Another classic from Alfred Hitchcock, this time leaning towards the end of the world. But let's start from the beginning. Life is great, everything is going well, until a San Francisco socialite decides to play a prank on a very presumptuous man. Something so silly becomes a snowball from that point on, creating a bigger disaster: “the war of the birds” as one of the characters says.
The Black Cat (1968) 6kg2c

Original title: Yabu no naka no kuroneko
96% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,7 on IMDb
Where to watch: Prime Video
Kaneto shindo directed around 48 films in total during his 100 years of life (1912 – 2012) and none are as bizarre as The black Cat. His background, like that of other directors already mentioned, was greatly influenced by the historical context in which he found himself. In this case, most of the films were haunted by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, the director's hometown.
In the story, two women are raped and killed by samurai soldiers. They soon reappear as vengeful ghosts who seduce and brutally kill the samurai in a completely terrifying way.
Night of the Living Dead (1968) 24353l

Rosemary's Baby (1968) 5m5l5p
Original title: Rosemary's Baby
97% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8,0 on IMDb
Where to watch: Paramount +
Another classic for this list. In the film Roman Polanski, a young couple moves into an apartment located in a quiet neighborhood. When the wife is surprised by a somewhat unusual pregnancy, paranoia about the safety of the fetus begins to control her life.
Once the Mia Farrow appears singing under the opening credits of this horror film, you can already feel the tension dominating the entire environment. How can you pretend to be normal when you have the distressing suspicion that witches have made a pact with Lucifer involving your unborn son?
Rosemary's Baby It brings psychological horror in a breathtaking way, bringing scenes and situations that become even more uncomfortable each time they are watched.
The Demons (1971) 57273z

Original title: The Devils
70% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,7 on IMDb
Where to watch: Currently unavailable
Ken Russell adapted The Devils of Loudon, by the author Aldous Huxley, in the creation of The demons. The film is set in 17th century and tells the story of the life of Urbain Grandier, a real figure played by Oliver Reed. He was accused of witchcraft by a sexually repressed nun – which resulted in the priest being executed at the stake. The film explores religious hypocrisy and gave rise to the creation of a new segment in horror, involving the religious context.
As you might have guessed, this film was banned, censored, barred, cursed and all sorts of negative things because it was considered an insult to the church. So much so that when it was finally released to the public, the official director's cut was never released. It is a story of abuse of power, sexual repression and mass hysteria.
The Exorcist (1973) 4q344t
Original title: The Exorcist
78% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8,1 on IMDb
Where to watch: Max
If I could sum this film up in one word, it would definitely be “iconic”. Of course, nowadays, if we put Generation Z to watch this classic, the risk of having laughter in the background is much greater, considering the somewhat dated visual effects. But it is undeniable that The Exorcist, William Friedkin, is a huge reference in the horror industry and continues to be one of the scariest audiovisual works ever made.
Cute blair gave the name when interpreting Reagan MacNeil, a teenager possessed by an evil spirit. Her mother desperately seeks the help of two priests, appealing to God and the world for her daughter's soul.
The greatest horror of all is that there is no prayer that can stop Regan from spinning her head and vomiting horrors while laughing evilly, prophesying the most disgusting vulgarities a church could ever contemplate. It is the clear message that no one is safe that installs the horror — going beyond the graphic.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) 6e1x5g
Original title: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
84% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,4 on IMDb
Where to watch: Prime Video e Play Market
Slasher, here we come! The 1970s were fundamental for the construction of this horror subgenre and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre de Tobe Hooper was definitely the pioneer.
In the story, a group of friends come across a disturbing house in Texas, inhabited by a family of frenzied cannibals led by one of the most iconic villains in history, the Leatherface. With a mask sewn from human skin and the iconic chainsaw, the killer is responsible for many extremely disturbing scenes.
It is also in this film that we have our first “final girl” in history. Sally (Marilyn Burns) becomes the pioneer of the few survivors in stories slasher and becomes an icon in the genre. The scene where she escapes in the back of a car, completely covered in blood, is unforgettable.
Shark (1975) 3b1zb
Original title: Jaws
97% on Rotten Tomatoes | 8,1 on IMDb
Where to watch: Telecine e Prime Video
The next stop is a snippet of the universe of Steven Spielberg. In this reality, humans think they have conquered the world, but that is not quite the case. While they are focused on supremacy, nature is reorganizing itself to respond in kind. In this blockbuster, a shark causes chaos on a beach and it is up to a sheriff, a biologist and a sailor to fight for their lives and the lives of the population. Get ready for a lot of blood!
Carrie the Strange (1976) 3a4l1f
Original title: Carrie
94% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,4 on IMDb
Where to watch: Telecine
Your graduation day may have been bad, but I highly doubt it was at the level of Carrie. Returning to the classics team, it is important to highlight that Sissy spacek is among the very few artists to earn an Oscar nomination for starring in a horror film.
The adaptation of the novel by Stephen King, made by Brian de Palma, is considered a saga of well-justified revenge in the face of a traumatic adolescence. In the plot, Carrie White (Spacek) is a shy and lonely young woman who unleashes her powers when she is humiliated by her schoolmates.
The Prophecy (1976) 2627r
Original title: The Omen
85% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,5 on IMDb
Where to watch: Prime Video
The prophecy is the first part of the franchise and to this day is considered one of the best horror films ever made. In it, Richard Donner creates a sinister atmosphere in which a series of mysterious deaths surround the United States ambassador, who wonders if it is possible that the child he is raising is actually the Antichrist.
Are some genuinely chilling scenes, including gruesome death sequences set to a famous Oscar-winning soundtrack (led by its theme song “Ave Satani”, composed by Jerry Goldsmith). The film definitely presents a scenario that would be any parent's worst nightmare.
Hausu (1977) 3e415j

91% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,3 on IMDb

Surprisingly, at the time, no one believed that this film would go ahead. But Obayashi Nobuhiko transformed the script into art on the screen. It may even have a touch of trash, but over time it has become a cult reference for anyone interested in the history of horror films.
On the premise, Oshare (Kimiko Ikegami) takes the group of friends to his aunt's haunted house. From there, it's all downhill from there. Nobuhiko explores the ghostly universe, giving life to objects and fueling situations in a very playful way, providing moments that make the viewer feel like they are on the brink of madness along with the characters.
Suspiria (1977) 8121o

94% on Rotten Tomatoes | 7,3 on IMDb
Where to watch: Currently unavailable
A tip is: don't watch the remake of 2018 without first going through this 1977 original. The aesthetics approached by Dario Argento It makes all the difference to understand the purpose of the film and how it is just a piece of the whole that the director built in his career.
Suspiria is the first part of Argento's trilogy about three mothers. In it, an American newcomer to a prestigious German ballet academy realizes that the school is a front for something sinister amid a series of gruesome murders. With the exception of the following film, Inferno, from 1980, the director never made anything as impressive as Suspiria.
The dazzling colors and overly dramatic acting with strategic camera moves provide a touch of beauty to the most brutal and iconic scenes imaginable. It's experimental cinema that's worked, and even though Luca Guadagnino have tried to replicate the formula, but have not been very successful.
Halloween: The Night of the Terror (1978) 5o2j3r

Halloween did not invent the formula for slasher, but definitely stood out among them for John Carpenter having found a surefire formula for the genre.

The premise is basic, but the story ends up being terrifying. Here, a family's house is haunted by a series of demonic ghosts. This is because the builders decided to ignore the fact that the land was previously the city's cemetery – a classic case of dehumanization that the corporate world takes as its motto. The result is obvious. The ghosts of the bodies that were buried there invade the family's home through the peaceful traps of the suburbs: toys for children and television for adults. Come into the light, Carol Anne!

the cronenberg and all its aesthetics involving threats from the scientific community? This time, he returns to this list with one of the most disgusting and terrifying films that exist. It was probably these elements that made it an acclaimed film and deserving of a space on the mainstream.
Em The fly, we can find a Jeff Goldblum very young, giving life to the eccentric scientist Seth Brundle. He completes his teleportation device and decides to test the effectiveness of the experiment on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a fly falls into the device during the process and causes him to merge with the insect. However, he thinks the experiment was a success, until he begins to notice that the fly's cells are taking over his body, and he ends up transforming into a monstrous creature.
Through incredible practical effects, graphically speaking, the feature film is the pinnacle of Cronenberg's exploration of aesthetics, which became known as a segment of body horror ou body horror. This subgenre often generates reflections on disease and aging in ways that are as disturbing as the themes themselves.

Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) 2j271q
Original title: Bram Stoker's Dracula

Francis Ford Coppola managed to create the perfect version with Dracula by Bram Stoker. We couldn't expect anything less from a film that has a cast like this Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves e Anthony Hopkins, among other prominent names in cinema.
Coppola explored all the hints of sensuality that were always buried and implied in Bram Stoker's original Dracula. The bright red in the clothes and the bloody razor that the ancient vampire barely resists; the elegant clothes and polite courtships that oppose the bestiality shown in some moments; the impeccable performances and the innocent women who were victims before, after the transformation they become irresistible and powerful beings. As they say, Coppola's version has aged like wine.

My friend, the list is very good, but it contains a fatal error, an inexplicable absence: The Night of the Living Dead, 1968.
Your list is very good! But you mentioned The Others, but you didn't mention The Innocents of 1961, The Others is a good movie, but it can't overcome the absolute classic of 1961 and doesn't even have the breath to be among the best horror films. Great directions, I'll look for the movies
The prophecy is quoted above as a trilogy, however, there is a fourth film.
