What is Mesh Router or Mesh Network? 3l4m3d

Mesh routers can increase the distance and quality of the Wi-Fi signal

Name Mesh (mesh, in Portuguese) is given to a type of Wi-Fi network made up of multiple routers. Instead of relying on a single router trying to handle everything, the mesh system distributes Wi-Fi by several devices spread throughout the environment: there is the main router (connected to the operator's modem) and the so-called “nodes” or “points”, which you position in strategic locations.

These points communicate with each other and form a single, intelligent network with the same name and (SSID). The result is a stronger, more stable signal in every room, without those dead zones where the internet disappears or barely works — ideal for larger homes, townhouses or environments with lots of walls and obstacles.

Unlike the traditional router, the mesh router It is sold in kits of 2 or 3 units, and you must purchase the necessary quantity considering the size of your house or apartment. They are more efficient than a single router, better covering large areas and even floors, and do not require the use of devices called Wi-Fi repeaters.

Features and technologies to keep an eye on 1d2p3s

More than just spreading Wi-Fi signals around your home, modern mesh routers offer a combination of smart features that you'll find in the devices listed in this article, and can make all the difference in your daily use. Check them out:

MU-MIMO (Multi-, Multiple Input, Multiple Output) 403g4o

MU-MIMU operating diagram – Image: Reproduction/Mercusys

Imagine a crowded food court with a waiter only serving one table at a time. Now imagine if he could serve several at the same time. That's what MU-MIMO does: allows the router to talk to multiple devices at the same time, speeding up the network in environments with many connected devices — like that house where everyone is watching a series, playing games or on a call at the same time.

Beamforming t1m2f

You know that sign that seems to disappear in the farthest room? Beamforming helps with this: it directs the Wi-Fi signal directly to connected devices, instead of scattering the signal in all directions.

OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access) 4d6f55

OFDMA Operation – Image: Asus

This feature is the heart of Wi-Fi 6 and 7. It splits the Wi-Fi channel into smaller sub-channels, allowing the router to send data to multiple devices at once. This greatly improves overall performance, reduces latency, and is perfect for homes with many smart devices running at the same time.

Smart Connect / Band Steering 3uo6p

Smart Connect – Image: TP-Link

No one wants to manually choose between Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz, right? The Smart connect It brings all of this together into a single network with a single name and the router automatically decides the best band for each device.

Visitors Network 4oy41

Guest networks are also security options – Image: Proton VPN

Do you know when guests come over and they ask for your Wi-Fi ? With this feature, you create a separate, secure, and temporary network. This way, guests can access the internet without invading your main network.

Perfect for those with children or teenagers at home. You can set usage times, block specific websites or apps, and even receive activity reports. It's a powerful tool for those who want to balance fun and online security.

QoS (Quality of Service) 63231n

With QoS you can prioritize certain devices – Image: Showmetech/AI-Generated

When everyone is using the internet at the same time, it is common for the connection to suffer. With QoS, you can prioritize certain devices or activities and ensure that your work video conference, for example, doesn't crash even with someone watching YouTube em 4K in the next room.

Why shouldn't I use/buy a signal repeater? 6m3o6g

Difference between a Mesh network router and a repeater – Image: Intelbras

Many people turn to Wi-Fi repeaters to try to improve the signal at home, but this solution often has serious limitations. The repeater works by capturing the signal from the main router and retransmitting that signal to other areas.

The problem is that by doing this, it basically splits the connection: since it uses the same antenna to receive and send data, the internet speed usually drops by half. In addition, it is common for the repeater to create a new Wi-Fi network with a different name, which requires the to manually change networks when moving around the house, something that is impractical and prone to failures.

Mesh systems, on the other hand, operate in an integrated manner. They use multiple interconnected units that create a single network with the same name (SSID), covering the home more efficiently. The system is able to automatically identify the point with the best signal and connect your device to it, without you noticing.

This ensures more stable, faster and continuous browsing, even when you are on the move, on a video call or watching a streaming video. It is a solution designed from the ground up to offer full and intelligent coverage in larger environments or with obstacles to signal propagation.

Understand Wi-Fi speed standards 2u274w

Wi-Fi standards 5, 6, 6e and 7 define whether your router is the fastest and most advanced
Wi-Fi 5, 6, 6E and 7 standards define whether your router is the fastest and most advanced – Image: Showmetech

When choosing a router, one of the most important things to consider is which Wi-Fi standard it offers. This specification will define not only the maximum connection speed, but also the ability to handle multiple devices at the same time.

Wi-Fi as we know it today became popular in the late 2000s, with the popularity of smartphones. At the time, the standard used was IEEE 802.11n, today called Wi-Fi 4. There were versions before it, but it's from there that things really stood out.

Today, newer standards are available, such as Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, WiFi 6E and, the most current of them, the Wi-Fi 7. With each new standard released, routers become faster, capable of handling more data and connecting to more devices. Therefore, it is always important to buy the most current standard. Here's how each one works:

Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) 212m5v
