With 709 cases of mpox in Brazil, the Ministry of Health calls for an emergency meeting. Understand

The Minister of Health, Nisia Trindade, reported that Brazil is at emergency level 1 for mpox, without detection of new variant 1B in the country. This strain, more transmissible and with the potential for more serious cases – with the possibility of death –, generated worldwide concern after the OMS declare a global health emergency due to the outbreak in Africa. Understand more about the new variant and Brazil's position in relation to the global emergency. 2l5xu

A World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared a new health emergency related to mpox ou monkey pox (formerly known as monkeypox, now with this new term). The announcement is due to an increase in cases and the greater lethality of the new Clade 1b strain, especially in regions of Africa.

This variant is even 10 times more lethal than the previous one, leading to concerns about rapid global spread. WHO has intensified efforts to vaccine production and called for international collaboration to contain the outbreak. Urgent measures are being adopted to control the disease.

Although the mpox Although it has historically been prevalent in regions of Africa, the recent spread to other continents has raised global concerns. Although this outbreak is closely monitored, the WHO recommends prevention and control measures, such as isolating suspected cases and vaccinating at-risk populations.

mpox has been known in Congo for more than 10 years. In the last two years, cases have exploded and sured all records. This is something that should concern everyone, and that is why we declare the disease as an international emergency, a global danger. This is our highest level of attention.

The strain Clade 1b da mpox, this new variant of the virus, presents differences compared to the strain Class 2, older. In of genetic characteristics, the Clade 1b displays variations in relation to the Class 2, which can influence its epidemiological behavior and viral properties. The transmission rate of Clade 1b may vary depending on the Class 2 — including being considered more contagious and more lethal —, in addition to there being differences in the severity of symptoms between these strains.

While the Class 2 has well-documented history of outbreaks, with symptoms such as fever, rashes and lymphadenopathy, to Clade 1b may present a different severity of these symptoms. Genetic differences can also affect the effectiveness of available treatments, although data on the response of Clade 1b treatments are still being collected.

The scientific community had already been warning about the risks of the disease since April 2024. At the time, a study indicated that 29% of cases ed involved people who worked in the sex industry, which may explain the rapid spread of the disease in the gold mining region, where there is a large presence of these workers.

However, it is still unclear exactly how transmission occurs: whether through bodily fluids or just through skin . That's why, Maria Van Kerkhove, responsible for the WHO's response to health emergencies, emphasized the need for more research on the subject.

The state of São Paulo recorded, in the first seven months of 2024, at least 315 confirmed cases of mpox, according to the latest monitoring bulletin from State Department of Health (SES). This number represents an increase of 257% compared to the same period in 2023, when 88 cases of the disease were recorded.

Despite the growth in relation to the last year, 2024 cases are significantly below 2022 numbers, when the state recorded 4.129 cases throughout the year. The Information Center Health Surveillance Strategies (CIEVS) of the state government, updated on August 16, reported a total of 4.813 confirmed cases and 3 deaths since the beginning of the epidemic.

In Brazil, the Ministry of Health reported that, in 2024, 709 confirmed or probable cases of mpox were reported, a number considerably lower than the more than 10 cases recorded in 2022, during the peak of the disease's first emergency in the country. Since 2022, there have been ed 16 deaths, with the most recent taking place in April 2023. Yesterday, August 15, the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, announced to the press the creation of the Health Emergency Operations Center (COE) to specifically coordinate response actions to mpox.

In 2022 the showmetech prepared content in text e video about, known at the time, monkeypox. Let's take a look again (ing that this information refers to the strain Class 2, which may have similar characteristics to the current strain, Clade 1b):

Symptoms 6x12o

Irritation and itching on the arms and torso are usually the main symptoms of the also known “monkey disease”. Image: GoodRx

A mpox has an incubation period that varies between 6 13 the day, with possible variations in 5 to 21 days. Infection can occur in two phases. The first phase, known as the “invasion phase”, lasts about 5 days and may present the following symptoms:

  • Intense asthenia (weakness)
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache (headache)
  • Back pain
  • Exhaustion
  • Lymph node enlargement (swelling of the lymph nodes)
  • Backache
  • Myalgia (muscle pain)

A lymphadenopathy is a distinctive symptom of mpox compared to other similar diseases, and can occur in locations such as the submandibular, sublingual and cervical lymph nodes.

1 to 3 days after the onset of fever, skin lesions appear, which are usually concentrated on the face and extremities, such as the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. Lesions can also affect the oral mucosa, genitals and conjunctivae, as well as the cornea, with the most affected areas being the first mentioned, while the least affected are the last.

A mpox é self-limiting, with the period of manifestations and recovery generally occurring between 2 and 4 weeks. Complications can include secondary bacterial infections, gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases, and keratitis. Serious cases, such as encephalitis, have also been reported. Children and pregnant women are the groups most susceptible to severe forms and worse outcomes.

Historically, the overall mortality rate in mpox It ranges from 0 to 11%, with a higher incidence in young children. More recent data indicate an overall mortality rate of between 3% and 6%.

How does contagion or transmission happen? 4j4b6u

Transmission can occur from animals to humans and also between humans. Image: Frontiers

Although the name suggests that monkeys are the origin of the disease, the monkeypox virus likely originates from wild rodents. The transmission for humans occurs mainly due to through body fluids, direct with blood, lesions on the skin or mucous membranes of infected animals. Other possible means of transmission include ingestion of undercooked meat or products derived from contaminated animals.

the transmission between humans happens through direct with skin lesions, respiratory secretions or recently contaminated objects. Droplet transmission occurs in cases of prolonged , with the risk being greater in close s and between healthcare professionals. Research indicates that monkeypox is less transmissible than smallpox.

Prevention and treatment: is there a vaccine? 4g655l

A mpox prevention It can be carried out through basic hygiene practices, such as washing your hands frequently, avoiding with wild or sick animals, and avoiding with people who show clear symptoms of the disease. istration of the vaccine against human smallpox within four days of suspected infection can provide about 85% protection against monkeypox.

the treatment of mpox is focused on minimizing symptoms and preventing possible complications during the period of infection. It is important to note that, due to the smallpox eradication in the 80s, the human smallpox vaccine may be in short supply today. With the increase in cases, the proliferation of vaccination campaigns in the most affected places is expected to increase and reach global levels.
