In February the Dutch group Mars One revealed the list of 100 finalists who still have a chance of being sent to Mars. More than 200 thousand people applied for the trip and after 2 years of selection, only 100 are still in the race. On the group's website you can see the complete list and view the profile of each candidate.

The Brazilian candidate is the 51-year-old teacher from Rondônia Sandra silva. The profile of those selected is mostly scientists and academics, aged between 19 and 60 years. The youngest, aged 19, are two women, an Australian inventor and an American student. The oldest, aged 60, is a Pakistani soldier.

Based on the curriculum and characteristics of each candidate there is a score that has been assigned to their profile. The candidate with the highest score is the Danish Christian O. Knudsen, 34 years old, who has 2544 points. The Brazilian teacher has 16th highest score, with 469 points.

At the end of the selection process, only 24 people will be selected. These 24 will be divided into 6 teams of 4 crew . Every 2 years one of the teams will be sent to the red planet. The first team is expected to be sent in 2018. The journey from Earth to Mars should take about 6 months.

There is a lot of controversy in the scientific community about the colonization expedition. According to one study carried out by researchers from MIT, with the technology we have today, hardly a human being can survive more than 68 days in the atmosphere of Mars.
