Call of Duty is the third most profitable franchise in gaming history. Even with the “hype” of Warzone's surprise release, is it worth another battle royale in an already saturated market? We play, compare and explain everything to you

This Tuesday (10), at 16 pm, the brand new franchise game Call of Duty went on the air for PC, PlayStation 4 e Xbox One. The launch, which won the title Warzone, was announced the day before and took everyone by surprise – even those already hooked on alleged leaks. 6h59s

The game is a FPS (First-person shooter) Free and serves as an addition to the recent Modern Warfare, (2007 reboot) which was released in August 2019. For those who already have MW, just a 20GB update. For others, it is necessary to reserve about 100GB console/PC to handle the entire game – which unfortunately doesn't include the rest of Modern Warfare.

For you to know whether or not it is worth ing Warzone, we play the two available modes (battle royale e money collection) and tell our first impressions below. In addition, we tell you what to expect from the game in the long term, in a hostile environment with strong competitors in the genre.

Battle Royale 4ka4w

The launch highlight mode is nothing new for fans of the franchise, much less for gamers connected to the hits of the decade. Therefore, it is worth understanding the proposal a little and then seeing how it differs from the rest.

Context inside and outside the CoD universe 5y421t

Beautiful graphics and gameplay identical to Modern Warfare. This is Warzone, a “standalone addition” to the game (Disclosure)

If you are used to the mechanics of Modern Warfare, you will feel “at home” with Warzone. It is just an addition to the multiplayer modes included in the original game, with the addition of the (cliché) battle royale. A fever for some years in other games, this mode consists of groups of players in direct confrontation on an island, surviving on the basis of collecting items, such as weapons and health kits. Yes, this is a “Big Guys Fortnite”.

The Call of Duty franchise has already taken a risk with the no-nonsense mode. Black Ops 4, 2018, calling its own battle royale “Blackout”. The first distinction between the modes in these two games is the developer: while BO4 was made by Treyarch (which has been taking care of the “Black Ops” label for years), the second is from Infinity Ward (from the first CoD, who takes care of the “Warfare” label).

Blackout, the franchise's first battle royale mode, arrived a few years ago (Disclosure)

And if the emerging genre is familiar, maybe it's because PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (or "PUBG"), which came a year before Fortnite, has contributed to the popularization of the mode. A curious fact is that the works Hunger Games (trilogy) and The Lord of the Flies also follow the same line, even if exploring it in print. Fact is that battle royale, also abbreviated as BR, is here to stay.

Proposal and gameplay 2y3rt

Nothing less than 150 players, divided into squads of up to three people, hop on an island looking for items in search of supplies and weapons, waiting for the gradual toxic cloud to close them in a tiny area. Warzone it's literally a war zone, and you'll feel it in your skin.

Verdansk is full of beautiful landscapes – until you hear the whir of a stray bullet in the distance

Traditional CoD series weapon classes are scattered throughout verdansk, city where everything happens, in “300 points of interest” very well distributed. There are conflicts between urban and rural areas, factories, residences and open fields (flat or mountainous). When talking about the architecture, the game does not let it down.

In this mode, as much as your life is a priority, you are only entitled to one respawn "free". Thus, when dying on the battlefield, you can enter into dispute (1v1) against another random player who is in the same game as you in an area called gulag – which historically is much worse than in this game. If you win, you can respawn on the map along with your teammates. If you lose, you should expect them to spend 4,500 credits to revive you.

Speaking of credits, another important differential of the game is the monetary side of the game: in the middle of the game you can contracts and, after fulfilling them, receive rewards. They range from “kill a specific player” and “dominate an area” to the simplest, which consists of loot chests randomly scattered nearby.

Similar to the shopping station of one of its predecessors (the Spec Ops mode of Modern Warfare 3, released in 2011), you can now acquire special items by collecting certain amounts of money. so it is possible order an air strike ou activate a radar recognition of nearby enemies, as well as the aforementioned function of reviving teammates.

Speaking of monetization, in battle royale sequel we will discuss another “quite capitalist” mode that has arrived in Warzone, the competitive money collection called Plunder.

Comparing Warzone to competition 12724u

The game's main distinction from the competition is the use of shield. You are already released on the map with a pistol and a shield that can be upgraded by collecting parts around the map. In other BR, the logic is usually the replacement of a single part, together with consumables that make you recover the "shield life". In this one, it's just an upgrade, and they all have the same maximum level.

Consequently, while in conflict your chances of recovery are minimal, even if you have shield pieces to spare. In competitive titles, you usually have all the speed to retreat and recover – Fortnite with buildings, Apex Legends with “champions” skills, for example. At this point, Warzone very reminiscent of the realistic aspect of PUBG.

Next, we will explore some more highlights of the game and potential improvements that Warzone could learn from other games that also have battle royale – or are dependent on the mode.

PUBG 534v1m

Pubg, Battle Heroine in Standout Pose, Ahead of Blast
With no colorful scenarios and no special skills, PUBG has attracted a more serious audience to the battle royale world (Disclosure)

The aforementioned PUBG helped popularize the use of vehicles for locomotion on the map, and Black Ops 4 only reaffirmed that the logic would also apply to the CoD universe. In Warzone, is no different, even if it happens from limited form. There are five vehicles, being 1/3 of the vast list that PUBG presents. On the island you can find an ATV (two seats), Rover, SUV, helicopter (four seats) and a Cargo Truck. The 15 variations of the competition make clear the point that Warzone could improve.

As much as Fortnite, which we cite in the sequence of this block, PUBG is cross-platform, and Warzone learned from requests from the public – and the success of MW – to migrate the function to BR and put a smile on the fans' faces. That is, you who own an Xbox can compete with those who are on PC or PlayStation.

Apex Legends 5no3z

even if the series Battlefield have brought to FPS mainstream the possibility of mark enemies ou items on the map, it was in battle royale Apex Legends that the function has become essential to the game mode. However, the “ping” options, as the action is called, in the Warzone are more limited than in Apex. In CoD you can only mark areas indicating your locomotion route, items on the ground or enemies, while in the (now) competitor there is a wheel for selection of 7 warnings.

Apex ping mechanics: you can warn of the presence of enemies or indicate various actions in a practical way (Playback; Stevivor)

If you take into that communication is essential – we say it really is! – in the game, really this is a weak point. The assimilated button (directional down if you use a controller) also shows poor command mapping, as moving the left analog finger in a conflict situation, just to indicate an enemy, can be fatal.

A final comparison to Apex is the differential that the game, released last year (another “behind” of the fever), popularized the mechanics of ammunition. With different types of weapons, the speed of searching for ammunition is facilitated by the color classification vivid: aqua green, blue, red and orange, for example. Each represents a class, from assault rifles to snipers and submachine guns.

In other current BRs, including both Call of Duty, there is not the same logic. You rely 100% on the reading when hovering over items. Again, it's an addition that could be interesting and would help a lot with searching around the map. Even if subtly, without losing the “serious” proposal of the franchise, it would make all the difference.

Fortnite 1s191r

Fortnite with wooden buildings, highlighting a squad (mixed)
This is definitely not the kind of building you would expect to find in the middle of a Call of Duty map (Playback; Fortnite INTEL)

We couldn't let go of the hits Fortnite from this list of comparisons. The main contrast between the two is very clear to anyone who has played it, as the target audience is also different. Fortnite is based on gameplay focused on buildings, the famous crafting and resource collection (not just consumables and weapons).

Wooden towers, fire pits and spiral staircases are props that ordinary Call of Duty players never expected to see sprout in the middle of a multiplayer match, even if they embrace the much-talked-about battle royale genre.

Plunder d3k1k

The second mode of the game, called Plunder (which literally translates to “loot”), consists of you accumulating 1 million credits collecting around the map or fulfilling contracts – virtually, just like in BR, luckily. Throughout the game, it is recommended to deposit the amount you carry in a specific area, calling a helicopter for collection. Otherwise, if you die, half the money is lost.

Warzone, plunder money collection mode, with bags of money and piles on the floor where three players are in conflict
Stacks of cash can be looted at first, or they can drop from dead enemies (Disclosure)

Lucky for you, the money is summed between the three individuals on your team. Unfortunately, the process is slow and quite painful. In this mode, you can also give respawn unlimitedly, in random areas across the map. As a result, if you or a teammate dies in conflict, be lucky that one of you lands back near the area you were in, as your "second life" might be enough to defeat the other competitors.

Once a team reaches the 1 million goal, a bonus mode is activated and no one else loses money on death, which only adds to the competitive spirit of everyone involved. If you are close to the goal and not in 1st place, this is your chance. The addition of this moment breaks the dynamics of the game, causing the concentration of players to be in the largest area of conflict – consequently, where the squad should be close to winning.

Armed conflict with the aim of making money. Sounds like real life, but it's just Call of Duty (Disclosure)

In a relaxed way, I won 3 of the 5 games I played in these first days of Warzone. By far, it's a more palpable victory (to players who understand the rules well) than battle royale. Just run to the deposit area once you hit $50k, for example, and repeat the process. In case you're lucky enough to fall with Teammates well coordinated, victory comes easy.

Additions to CoD Mobile 5d234s

No broke records at launch and, until the 23rd, you will be entitled to one of the “epic” characters (shown in the image below) to add to your collection.

A limited CoD Mobile event entitles you to one of three characters (Playback; CoD)

The important thing is your Mobile be the same one you use in Warzone, which prevents those who have not played the newly released from enjoying the mamata. if you have the Modern Warfare, just update it so that the servers recognize your “character voucher” currency.

As a result: the Call of Duty franchise had three successes absolute figures released only in the last 7 months. In of the public, which may or may not have migrated between the three (specifically Mobile and Warzone, as both are free), this is a remarkable achievement. And he's not the only one in this batch.

proof of success 2c3yf

The new CoD has already stood out among other games – not just battle royale – such as the brand’s own Twitter published this Thursday that, only in the first 24 hours, 6 million players enjoyed the game, adding the three platforms. according to sullygnome, a site that compiles viewing data from online platforms, half a million people watched a total of four million hours on Twitch, game streaming, also on the first day of the game.

Cod warzone, world map showing game release times
The map with the time of release respecting the time zone only helped to raise the “hype” of the title (Disclosure)

Releases surprise, whether leaking and raising suspicions or not, usually do well too. Apex Legends, from 2019, was a great example of this, as it aired the day it was announced. Another parallel to make with the game is the inspiration in another universe - Apex in the context of Titanfall, and Warzone in the context of Modern Warfare. The competitor also reached the 50 million player mark in the first month. Does CoD hit the mark?

One way to attract the public to the game is the thirst of s for compete on multiple platforms. particularly, I have gaming buddies from other platforms (in particular, PC) that do not have room for competition in games other than Overwatch e Rocket League. With the audience conquered, it only remains to maintain. Unfortunately, from my experience in the game, they can fail badly in this mission.

Long term failure? 5c522

Amid so many features and comparisons, it is inevitable to think about the long-term impact of the game. At first night of the game, which is supposed to be the largest flow (at least national) of players, there was a small problem with filling system LOBBY – that is, find and group the 150 players online on a single map.

On one occasion I waited for more than 10 minutes (yes, an eternity in the video game world) for the “intelligence” of the game to find another 147 lucky ones from other squads to fight in a match. Even after pre-match load, the problem persisted. After giving up and restarting the game, the failure recurred. On a third attempt, the maximum number (from 150) was then decided to drop below 120 and the game counted down to the start of the match, which began.

Player on hold in warzone lobby
When leaving a match, loading the lobby can take a long time (Playback; Gosunoob)

Taking into other competitives, which are based on seasons, battle es and updates (see Fortnite e Apex Legends), there is naturally a bigger flow of players at the ends of each period, both at the end and at the beginning. In a new season, we have precisely the time when you can get new items and enjoy the new features of the game. To latecomers to climb experience and deal with rankings, which are reset every season, you can also see more players online in the last days of the version in question.

If, on launch day, a game that signs with the label of the Call of Duty franchise (ing: the third most profitable in history of games) that is cross-platform cannot fill rooms, for whatever reason, we have a huge community gap.

Lobby issues are not unique to Warzone, as the same is still true of Apex Legends – to this day, over a year after launch (Playback; EA Answers)

We know that there were enough people watching, as mentioned above, and up to 10x more active players waiting for armed combat. Server intelligence failed to pair players? The servers couldn't handle so many people trying? Was it a failure of filters when trying to people on different platforms? There's really no way of knowing, until an official announcement - which probably shouldn't happen.

In a quick internal survey, among other Brazilian gamers friends, I say that the problem of LOBBY happened on both PC and PlayStation 4. On PC, even, the problem was also related to the game not being able to run, as reported by frustrated reddit s. The community also reaffirmed problems with start of match and claimed to stay more than half an hour in the pre-match waiting for a game.

Warzone sured (and doubled) the number of viewers for other games in the first few days since its release. (Playback/Twitch)

Fortunately, most players seemed satisfied with the experience, as dozens of streamers managed to be successful in the first few days of play, creating a peak audience three times larger than Fortnite – about 300 thousand views on Twitch on the night of 12/03. The most recent sudden success that we can compare is that of Apex Legends, from last year, which kept its audience for a while, but doesn't come close to suring games like League of Legends nowadays.

In short, we can only wait for Updates who will fix the errors that we experience these days and also for those who will add new features to the Call of Duty: War zone as a way to see the balance of this newcomer title.

And you, will check it out"what is this new battle royale“? Tell us in the comments.
