Debuting today in Brazil, the first film about a superhero from the Marvel Universe instigates by the range it offers to the chronology of the hero franchise, but suffers when trying to balance the studio's old narrative arcs.

Like the first movie Marvel Cinematic Universe led by a super heroine, Captain Marvel arrives in theaters under a heavy burden of expectations. Even after many years of fans clamoring for a Black Widow solo movie, it took ten years and 20 MCU movies for the franchise to produce a single film with a female lead. 3h6l14

And expectations are even more astronomical given the public and critical success of DC Entertainment.

Add to that the fact that its main star, B, be a winner of the Oscar for Best Actress, Captain Marvel has the triple challenge of honoring the latest MCU films, proving that a film led by a woman can indeed make the company's money, and, in addition, compete with one of DC's biggest hits.

Inevitable: Captain Marvel movie debuts with the difficult mission to live up to Wonder Woman

But even without the challenge of breaking down representation barriers for the MCU, Captain Marvel is facing high expectations because of the MCU movies that preceded it.

Success chronology 73d4n

First hints about Captain Marvel's solo movie have already been given in Infinity War. Kick-off for the insertion of the heroine in the Marvel franchise

starting with first Oscar winning film.

This chronology fitted perfectly for the proposal of what would come next: Avengers: Infinity War, which brought together all 18 previous films, grossing $2 billion worldwide and, for a change, eradicated half the population of the universe.

Even Ant-Man and the Wasp, the first Marvel movie with a female character in its title, seemed to be lining up for the expectations of Captain Marvel, and for the watershed movie, which will be the next Avengers movie.

In Endgame, it's up to Brie Larson's Captain to serve as a counterpoint to Thanos' villainy

After all that, Captain Marvel is in the unenviable position of having to introduce a new character to the MCU, trace her origin story, tie her to the current MCU line, create backstories (“backstories”, in free translation) for several previously established characters and configure even more significant elements to Avengers: Endgame. But Captain Marvel usually bears the brunt of these expectations.

The film rises to the occasion with strong performances and its directors' willingness to slow down and take its story seriously, balancing humor, action and exposure in a carefully calibrated package.

Captain Marvel: The Plot n686a

Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is initially introduced as Vers, a Starforce space squadron agent of the Kree alien race. Vers is not a character from the original Captain Marvel comics, but Marvel readers may recognize his fellow Starforce : Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), Minn-Erva (Gemma Chans), Bron-Char (Rune Temte), Att-Lass (Algenis Pérez Soto) and their leader Yon-Rogg (Jude Law).

Vers has powerful Kree abilities: super strength, physical stamina, and the ability to fire energy blasts from his fingertips. But there's a catch: she can't how she got these powers, or what her life was like before the Kree found her and brought her to the Kree hometown of Hala.

When Starforce is assigned to retrieve a spy, Vers ends up in the hands of the Skrulls, a race of aliens at war with the Kree. Skrull leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) has a goal, and he's willing to surf through Vers' memories to get it: the Lightspeed Engine, which could turn the tide of the war in the Skrulls' favor.

Vers/Carol/Captain are the three facets of Marvel's new superhero

But Talos' journey through Vers' memory unlocks visions of her past as Carol Danvers, which takes her to planet C-53 (Earth) in the 1990s. There, she gets the attention of Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson, this time with both eyes intact) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg, with more hair than he has in Avengers or Agents of SHIELD). And therein lies the gem of the film.

Danvers and Fury's cat-and-mouse dynamic becomes a highlight of the film, as Vers steps out of a highly advanced civilization into a world of payphones and malls while wearing a Starforce uniform and talking about shape-shifting aliens.

90s nostalgia is strong in Captain Marvel. the directors Ryan Fleck e Anna Boden weave together the futuristic elements of Carol's retro-period story, from clothes to cars and music. Stain said music was the first thing they focused on during pre-production, creating a playlist that included songs like I'm a girl by No Doubt, Come As You Are, by Nirvana, something like the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and their mixtapes classic.

Here Captain Marvel uses the soundtrack as something of a joke, driving the audience's nostalgia while dictating the mood of adding familiar tunes to awkward situations.

The strengths 59e6b

Carol and Maria's friendship paves the film and opens up points for the future

The greatest strength of Captain Marvel is in her central relationship between Carol and Air Force pilot Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch). Like Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes, Carol and Maria are linked by a common past and a deep friendship, even if Carol doesn't it.

Brie believes that Maria and Carol's friendship is the "love of the movie".

Captain Marvel is a rare character in the Marvel Universe who has no symbolic love interest, even though, for Larson, Carol and Maria's friendship is like "the love of the movie". “This is love lost, this is love found again, this is the reason to keep fighting and go to the ends of the earth,” she said.

But bringing that level of love, confusion and commitment takes a toll on the actress, who essentially plays three roles in this film: Vers, Carol and Captain Marvel. Each has its own journey and challenges. Larson's ferocity in the action scenes and his silent pain in deeper moments are, for all intents and purposes, organic. The story feels confusing at times, but its strong and reliable performance provides the connection needed to empathize with your journey.

Action! 4q3317

Brie had training along the lines of Chris Evans for Captain America, but her action scenes end up being overshadowed by pyrotechnics.

If the emotion has the right amount of balance, the action in the film may seem less convincing, however. Brie Larson reportedly trained for four-and-a-half hours a day over the course of 10 weeks to prepare for her fight scenes, but aside from a Larson-Law fight, most matches are dull edited and focused on big jumps. , compromising our own notion of spatiality.

Everything is so frenetic that it's hard to see if the actors are physically capable of convincing, and it rarely feels like they're executing the moves. A missed opportunity.

None of this stops the villain from stealing the movie. Even in latex and Skrull attire, mendelsohn how dangerous and charming, even sexy, Talos is. He seems to be having a lot of fun in the role, and he's convincing no matter how much damage and destruction he does.

Ben Mendelsohn has fun and delivers a villain that can easily enter the top 3 of Marvel's memorable villains alongside Killmonger and Thanos.

The difficulties of Marvel at creating memorable villains are glaring, and, through trial and error, the films have tended to gradually improve over time, with adversaries like Erik Killmonger and Thanos bringing character and principle to their roles, rather than just naked, pointless evil.

Talos s this duo as a villain with a significant purpose - though he's still overshadowed by Goose, a cat consciously bred to be an immediate audience favorite.

History and the challenge of origin 355tp

Captain Marvel is the first female heroine film
The film reconciles the emotional narrative well, but fails to introduce elements of the Marvel Universe

The only obstacle that Captain Marvel doesn't entirely clarify comes from the execution of your story. Its main narrative, around Vers/Carol/Captain and her voyage of self-discovery, fall well together, following Marvel's usual patterns of drama and humor and up-and-down action.

But the story gets more complicated when all of this has yet to bring together elements of the MCU's past and future. The Kree, already seen as villains in Guardians of the Galaxy e Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., are portrayed as heroes here. In Guardians, Ronan the Acc (Lee Pace) was obsessed with destruction, and viewers may have a hard time understanding his motivations in Captain Marvel.

Captain marvel is difficult to count with three narrative lines practically
Even with flaws, the directors don't shy away from the challenge of Danvers' complicated origin story

The followers of Marvel may appreciate the way some puzzle pieces fit together, but more casual viewers may find the information and the film's many seemingly unrelated or unwarranted elements confusing.

But the filmmakers don't shy away from the complexity of their story. Loaded with the creation of Captain as a necessary element to serve as a counterpoint to Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, they give her a rich origin story and believable motivation.

At times, the film can feel overwhelmed with story elements, but each of these individual elements feels important and meaningful, from the extended flight scene that combines humor and danger to Fury's joke telling his story to Carol's amusement. Some of these may linger in isolation, but for the most part they seem necessary to the larger story.

Extremely powerful, carol can be the trump card against thanos
As expected, Captain Marvel raises expectations for the outcome of the Avengers in Endgame

Ultimately, Captain Marvel does its job and looks pretty good doing it. As a representational film, it is not as revolutionary as the Black Panther, and is not as adventurous or humorous as Thor: Ragnarok.

But it provides the girl power narrative the MCU needed on a level to rival Wonder Woman, and not just making the Captain Marvel a powerful heroine. This also makes her an irable person, with good friends and goals worth striving for.

And it firmly establishes Carol Danvers as one of Marvel's most powerful superheroes, which is exactly what the Avengers are going to need in Endgame.
