In line with market trends, the BMW focuses on interior technology, introducing innovative features such as gaming, video streaming and voice assistants with technology augmented reality (AR) e LLM (Language Machine Learning). This means that BMW vehicles will offer an even more immersive experience, allowing occupants to enjoy streaming video content and gaming options directly in their cars.

The vision for BMW's future lineup is ambitious, with the automaker granting customers access to previously unavailable technologies. This includes the incorporation of augmented and mixed reality, as well as voice assistants powered by generative artificial intelligence, representing a significant leap forward in offering advanced and personalized features.

A BMW is at the forefront of revolutionizing the driving experience by introducing an innovative gaming system into its vehicles. Differentiating itself from the previous system, owners can now connect controls to the via Bluetooth, providing a more immersive gaming experience. The automaker demonstrated this new feature at CES 2024 with the game Beach Buggy Racing 2.

In addition to controls , the company is committed to keeping its customers up to date with the latest trends in automotive entertainment. Over-the-air (OTA) updates will be released throughout 2024 to implement the new gaming system in eligible vehicles with the BMW Operating System 9 and a signature Digital.

According to a statement transmitted by BMW itself:

With the AirConsole app, BMW and MINI customers can now play single and multiplayer games in the vehicle. Games are easily accessible to everyone, as the smartphone becomes a controller and allows simple and easy-to-learn operation. The AirConsole in-vehicle app's range of games is constantly developing.

However, the company emphasizes responsibility in the use of these resources, aware of the growing concerns about distractions in traffic. With occupant safety in mind, the automaker seeks to balance technological innovation with responsible driving.

BMW didn't limit itself to games to demonstrate that it is willing to elevate the entertainment experience in its vehicles. The German automaker also announced that it will provide customers with a wide range of video streaming options directly on the central display. In addition to the innovative BMW Theater Screen with Amazon Fire TV in the rear compartment of the BMW 7 Series, owners can now enjoy diverse content on the central display.

The automaker's developers collaborated with XPERI, Inc.. to optimize the renowned operating system TiVo, known in the Smart TV sector, to enable video streaming in vehicles. This integration includes the video service DTS AutoStage, powered by TiVo, offering live channels and on-demand media libraries spanning news, sports, kids' entertainment, movies and TV series.

This innovation is available on vehicles with BMW Operating System 8.5 together with ConnectedDrive Professional or BMW Operating System 9 together with BMW Digital . Models like the BMW 7 Series, BMW iX (produced from 23/03), BMW X5, BMW X6, BMW X7, BMW M X5, BMW M X6 (produced from 23/04) and BMW-XM (produced from 23/08) are covered by this expanded entertainment experience.

Initially introduced in the new BMW 5 Series, this platform is being implemented remotely in other luxury models. Owners of vehicles with BMW Operating System 9 already have access to the video app in conjunction with BMW Digital from the end of 2023. Other models, such as the BMW X2 and the entire new MINI family, will follow in 2024.

The video app, which is now available in the US, UK, South Korea, , Italy, , Spain and soon in Japan, offers a diverse selection of portals including Pluto TV, Bloomberg, TED, Yahoo! and Pepper. Additionally, specific countries have additional streaming offers, such as JOYN, ZDF, Tagesschau and Deutsche Welle in , or RaiPlay in Italy.

Now, the company is looking to integrate the “DTS AutoStage Video Service powered by TiVo,” which offers a variety of live channels and on-demand media libraries covering diverse categories from news and sports to kids' entertainment, movies and TV series. This system, first launched with the BMW 5 Series, will be extended to more “executive and luxurious” models through over-the-air updates in 2024.

BMW also announces that it is among the first automakers to nail Augmented Reality (AR) applications for vehicles, revealing this capability for the first time at CES in Las Vegas. The experience will be demonstrated through the use of Xreal Air 2 AR glasses, equipped with Micro OLEDs, projecting a 1920 x 1080 pixel screen in front of the engers' eyes. The proposal is to integrate navigation instructions, danger warnings, entertainment content and information about charging stations in a way that is perfectly integrated into the real environment.

Seeking to establish an “industry standard” for the use of AR and MR (mixed reality) in vehicles, the automaker highlights its history of development in this area since 2008. The AR/MR device tracking system is fundamental, being linked to data of the vehicle's sensor to maintain the stability of the displayed image.

The company assumes that rear engers, especially in luxury vehicles like the BMW 7 Series, can take advantage of the glasses AR Xreal for remote work, virtual meetings or even gaming.

AI voice assistant 2b2b4y

In partnership with Amazon, BMW aims to reinvent its voice assistance capabilities with AI. Photo: BMW.

In the field of AIs, the partnership between BMW and Amazon advances the presentation of innovative voice assistant features based on a current development project. This t effort aims to potentially launch into series the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, consolidating itself as the most advanced vehicle specialist enabled by generative AI, powered by Alexa LLM.

Visitors will have the opportunity to experience how this voice assistant revolutionizes vehicle interactions, offering instructions and responses in a more human and conversational way. Furthermore, the assistant is capable of controlling some vehicle functions, providing a more intuitive and connected driving experience.

Although Alexa has been present as a voice assistant in BMW vehicles since 2018, the company recognizes that the current lineup lacks some of these advanced capabilities, which may soon be implemented thanks to LLMs. The automotive industry as a whole is focused on strengthening the ties between voice assistants and core vehicle functionality. Innovations involving BMW and AI are not new, but the difference in this case lies in the commitment to maintain Amazon's aAlexa as the basis for BMW cars, instead of migrating to Google's AI solutions, maintaining integration with the Android operating system of the automaker.

Last but not least impressively, BMW is collaborating with Valeo, an automobile supplier, to develop an innovative “automated valet parking” functionality, which can also be operated via teleoperation. In this proposed scenario, customers would leave their vehicles in designated delivery areas, and then the vehicle would begin searching for an available parking space. After finding the space, it would carry out the necessary maneuvers to park and, later, return to the collection area to be recovered by the driver. BMW highlights that either an autonomous driving system or a teleoperated valet system can be employed as the underlying technology for this functionality.

Despite advances in autonomous parking, teleoperation presents significant challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining a robust, low-latency connection between the remote operator and the vehicle. Many autonomous vehicle companies include some form of teleassistance, but full remote operation is still a challenging area.

BMW has been dedicated to developing autonomous parking technology for some time, receiving recognition from the US Department of Transportation for its efforts. However, self-parking is not without complexities, and while most companies offer some type of autonomous or automated parking system, it is important to recognize that these systems are not entirely free from challenges and ongoing improvements.

Na CES 2024, visitors will have the opportunity to experience remote-controlled valet parking, a demonstration of BMW's commitment to exploring innovative solutions. Remote control uses advanced technology and live image transmissions to precisely guide and maneuver the vehicle during parking and controlled return. Potential future applications of this technology could include parking for events, airports or logistics, providing flexibility and efficiency in challenging environments.
