Dark Matter Review 5m1rl
Before we continue with the criticism of Dark matter, I highlight that the impressions will be spoiler-free, in order not to spoil your initial experience, and that all information expressed by this article have already been shown in synopses, trailers and promotional materials by Apple itself. For now, we have separated some evaluation pillars between script, acting and direction.
With the Brazilian Alice Braga in the cast, the narrative of Dark matter tells about physics teacher Jason (Joel Edgerton), who lives his life happily alongside his art curator wife (Jennifer Connelly) and her 15-year-old son (Oakes fegley) in Chicago, but feels he should have more experiences. One night, after celebrating at a bar with his scientist friend Ryan (Jimmi Simpson) his academic achievements, Jason is kidnapped and drugged by a masked man, who forces him to take off his belongings and exchange clothes with the kidnapper.

After fainting, Jason realizes that he is no longer married to his wife nor does he have a child; it is a reality where Jason is a prestigious scientist and leader of research that uses the concepts brought by the idea of Schrödinger box and quantum mechanics to move in parallel realities. And not only that: the kidnapper is himself. Now it's up to the physics teacher to try to return to his world; and renowned scientist Jason does everything he can to stay in the reality of his “other self”.
The explanation of a more scientific and darker multiverse 5d2q4e
One of the points that brought more spotlight to the plot was the concept of multiverse — again used by major producers — without costumes or abstract elements, as we saw in Marvel films Everything Everywhere at the Same Time.
Dark matter draws heavily from the famous idea of the Austrian scientist and Nobel Prize winner, Erwin Schrödinger, who points out that through the laws of quantum physics on forms of manifestation of radioactivity, including by particles — and his knowledge of this form can indeed occupy two places alongside at the same time -, a box containing a cat, a radioactive material and a Geiger counter, will have, at the same time, both the event of the cat's exposure to radioactive material and non-exposure simultaneously. This is just not noticed, because the slightest interference, like a light, would cause these two realities, both subatomic, to collapse.

In the plot, a large box with light and sound isolation is created by Jason (renowned scientist version): through an injectable drug that alters the brain chemistry of the prefrontal cortex, it becomes possible for a human to be in superposition and access different existing subatomic realities of your own version. The concept, difficult, is well explained throughout the plot over time.
For a layman or minimally informed audience, as is the majority of the series' target audience, these are very complex concepts to understand — to this day, after decades, little is known about quantum mechanics and its field of study. Therefore, it is a wise and accurate choice to use all this reasoning as a complement, without so much spotlight.
On the contrary, Dark matter It uses the resource very well in dialogue scenes, in choppy moments, to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense in search of logical answers to what happened. The viewer is immersed in the unfolding story and helps connect the missing dots.

Scenic work does not produce good scenes and is saved by the script c4aq
As for acting, Dark matter owes a little. Dramas tend to highlight the talent of the performing artists, but that's not what I witnessed in the series. You understand the characters' motives, but you don't understand them; It doesn't generate a bond, it doesn't trigger emotions or peaks, which is a shame given the strength that its proposal carries.
Similar to the idea of Everything Everywhere at the Same Time, Dark matter talks about the power of the decisions we make daily. Acts that seem so simple at the time carry a significant weight in our lives and shape us into the way we are today. We’ve all asked ourselves this same question: “What if I had done differently?".

“People don't lie awake at night thinking about the Multiverse, they lie awake at night wondering if they married the right person, if they should have had children, and if they had taken the chance they didn't take 20 years ago. This is not science fiction, this is just the disguise.”, as Blake Crouch said to Omelette, seeing such a natural and instinctive point of what we are and think. A world where more and more comparisons are made and analyzed, more demands and invalidations are present... a reflection that doesn't leave our heads and pulls us down, like anchors. After all, “life is one”, right?
And with Jason it would be no different. Choosing a renowned career in science or creating a family is the catalyst that distinguishes Jason 1 and Jason 2 and places them in completely opposite positions, socio-financially and mentally.
Talking about love, regardless of its type — sexual, platonic, fraternal, family or professional — is powerful because it is a universal language. A little more tact and chemistry work between the actors or more emotional and intense details on screen would be very important — which was left only in the dialogues. That said, Jimmi Simpson was a pleasant surprise and Alice Braga finishes prominently in the initial episodes, being able to display more of her talent on screen.

Lack of more rhythm undermines storytelling q6p6s

The script is good, but it condemns itself due to the slowness of the events. To precisely take the series to the emotional side, Dark matter it prolongs the episodes, leaving all the climax and movement from the third. Taking into that each episode lasts an average of 50 minutes, scenes that do not move the main plot arc become tiring for the viewer: the journey of physics professor Jason in search of his true home.
International Review 3f6k6n

Dark matter does not come with praise, according to major international criticism sites, such as R and IMDB, but it remains with a considerable positive margin. On Rotten, Blake Crouch's series has a 79% approval rating from experts – which would be a score of 6,8 out of 10 – and 72% approval from the public. At the IMDB, the case was more positive, rating the Apple TV+ original at 7,4, with more than 3,8 ratings posted on the site.
Conclusion 60664y

Dark matter is a good addition to the list, bringing an interesting twist between greater scientific logic behind the niche of the Multiverse and Alternative Realities and a bet on a dramatic suspense filled with emotional weights that are “canonical events” in anyone's life. But get rid of it, the production is not innovative in itself and it tires you in the first two episodes, until the third arrives and brings more order and interest to the viewers.
Finally, it is an option worth considering, both for lovers of drama and suspense, and for those interested in plots linked to the Multiverse and more down-to-earth science fiction.
What to expect from the rest of the series? 6n1ls
[SPOILERS WARNING]
Episode three of Dark matter brings Amanda (Alice Braga) and Jason (Joel Edgerton) into a “hall” full of paths to infinite alternative realities. Therefore, it is expected that more realities will have screen time, in addition to a greater role for the character of Alice Braga, presented late in the series in relation to the other main characters, and her chemistry with Jason.

In the trailer for the first season, we already saw some samples of these other worlds in which a different version of Jason lived. An apparently abandoned and ruined city and even a city covered in snow are seen in the scene in the official teaser.
In short, the tone of the series will be quite different, going through adventures that may even resemble The Last of Us in a rhythm of survival and jumps between parallel universes through the Box created by scientist Jason. Like any production that dares to tell plots of this type, of course we can also look forward to action scenes involving several Jasons fighting or interacting with physics teacher Jason.

This series reminded me of the same theme as Sliders – Parallel Dimensions (1995-2000), where a group jumped in different parallel dimensions, through a vortex. Differentiating by suspense and drama.
