Almost like an Oscar tradition, a new war film is among the most nominated for the world's highest cinema award. 'Nothing New on the Front' had a big challenge in hand and managed to meet it with an intense plot about the First World War. 2y1an

This type of genre is constantly commented on for several reasons. For example, technique often takes over. Conflict scenes and special effects are often impressive on screen. On the other hand, a portion of viewers is a little tired of watching a formula similar to what has already been done. To try to escape this comfort, the movie Edward berger comes to talk about the defeated side: and its desolate people.

Available in Netflix, the film addresses the Germanic confrontation against the United Kingdom during the First War from Paul (Felix Kammerer), a young man summoned to act on the front lines of the war. His enthusiasm is contagious among his friends and other kids who have also signed up. However, from the moment he enters the battlefield, the penny drops and reality comes to light.

Indisputably,'Nothing New on the Front' delivers technical quality by all means. the way James Friend, director of photography, guides the camera through the trenches, in the conflicts, in the piercing peace of dusk and many other moments is of great impact. Along with that, the makeup and visual effects make the scenes more visceral, disgusting and realistic. Now, the film's greatest prestige, however, is elsewhere.

Edward Berger does not only discuss the vision of the defeated, but the false sense of freedom that preached to its young people based on the influence of the military. In the plot, Paul did not even turn 18 before wearing a uniform and being thrown into the middle of what can be called hell on Earth.

The way the audience watches through this young man's eyes as the world around them crumbles and explodes — literally — is a shattering sensation. Other war films have a stronger aspect with regard to the dramatic charge of their story, but here this is what brings the feature to life and what makes it truly special.

An interesting fact is the duality between this film and '1917', which also takes place in the First War, but through the eyes of the enemy of - and, of course, also with another plot. But, unlike 'Nothing New on the Front', '1917' bets much more on aesthetics than on the screenplay.

The greatest desire of young Germans at the time was to the fight to defend a nationalist idea that only generated hatred. Once present on combat ground, the will was to escape that horror. This film also shows that there was never any real rest, even while there was optimism in a possible victory. The director reiterates the cyclical movement during a war whose result is only despair and collective trauma.

With this overwhelming proposal, the German feature is the third adaptation of the homonymous work, published in 1929 and written by Erich Maria Note. And its reception has been excellent. The film came out of BAFTA this year with seven wins. Plus, the awards circuit made sure not to forget him, including the 2023 Oscars.

In addition to following this title on the rise, it is worth checking out this drama that portrays a very troubled period in world history. It doesn't revolutionize the format, but it delivers a good experience with an unprecedented look and great actors. Even those less familiar with the genre, we recommend giving the German film a chance.

In this year, 'Nothing New on the Front' is running for nine categories, being the second most nominated. Are they: Best Film, Best International Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Makeup and Hairstyling e Best sound.

The film is expected to shine in the more technical categories. Best Sound and Best International Film are its most likely wins. A third option is Best Photography. The title would also win Best Visual Effects if'Avatar: The Way of Water' was not indicated. Makeup and Hairstyling, Adapted Screenplay, Soundtrack and Production Design must go to other films.

With boost in the campaign for BAFTA success, the Best Film category doesn't sound like such a distant outcome. Currently, the film is one of the main fights for the statuette. But the result will only be known at the ceremony, on March 12.
