Netflix K-Drama knew how to take advantage of the tension of macabre games without abandoning character development

There was a moment when Deadly Games it was one of the main horror references of the 2000s. I mean, the franchise still has thousands of fans, but, specifically at the time of its release, its popularity reached a worldwide scale. The same happens today with Round 6, new series of Netflix, but in the digital age, where a viral appears in a matter of minutes. 1r2y5y

There is a certain fascination on the part of viewers, horror enthusiasts or not, for stories that involve some kind of competition. That was how Mortal Games won over the public, as well as other productions that involve disputes, such as Hunger Games e Player Nº1 – not coincidentally, all of them with “game” in the title or theme. Round 6 is a thriller series that replicates some well-known styles in the horror and torture genre and succeeds by bringing solid characters in a way that is not flat.

Also known as Squid Games, Round 6 is an K-drama from Netflix that features a survival game whose winner takes a large amount of money. Participants are South Korean citizens who are gamblers or are experiencing some sort of financial hardship. What is not explained to them is how deadly the game becomes in the first of six rounds.

The first thing that catches Round 6's attention is its choice to not just focus on the game itself. Despite being the main theme of the story, the director Dong-hyuk Hwang offers the viewer the opportunity to know much more behind the main characters that are involved in such game. In fact, this is probably one of the reasons why the series is so successful worldwide, moving towards the most watched show on the platform of streaming. Simply because there is a good construction of figures and the public finds itself rooting for them even knowing their troubled pasts.

To each participant eliminated from the game — and when he says he is eliminated, he is eliminated same — greater is the prize collected until the last round. All rounds are based on a specific topic (this will be up to you to check out in person in the series) and brings an interesting contradiction between the lightness of the idea and the horror of deadly resolutions.

In addition to the engaging narrative, one of the greatest merits of the production is the presence of a striking personality in the participants. (Image: Netflix/Disclosure)

From a narrative point of view, the series manages to do what needs to be done and in an insightful way, holding the viewer in all nine episodes until they discover what happens at the end of this macabre journey. There is also the relationship between the game itself as a system of oppression in which, at different times, the director's intention to criticize the way society treats people in fragile situations is clear.

Reinforcing this topic, the series chooses to go the opposite way to Hunger Games and, for example, it puts characters in a position of mercy for the system rather than as revolutionaries against it. the scenes of gore exist, but within this chaotic context, they make sense and give the tense touch that horror demands. Another interesting moment in the series is the presentation of the plot layers. While the game happens, other factors are accompanied simultaneously and bring dynamism to the story.

Striking visual identity and empathy with players 1siu

In particular, two things are very visible about the viral character of the series. The first one is the very striking visual identity. Even if you haven't seen it yet Round 6, most likely you've seen the doll from one of the games out there on social media.

Each game has its own scheme and rules, which are only revealed to the participants at the time of the clash. All scenarios are very immersive and match the proposal of each challenge. In fact, not only the battlegrounds, but the waiting 'hall' itself has a strong identity even with a simple decoration. All this is valid for the memory that spectators create of players.

The second feature that elevates the series to the mainstream is its ability to make the public empathize with the players. As said before, the main figures have their development in a way that the public is rooting for them and not just waiting for luck to come in their favor.

Within the universe of the series, the characters are called by number, the most recurrent being: Seong Gin-hun (456) It's Sae-byeok (067) Cho Sang-woo (218) and Jang Deok-su (101). Their relationship with each other and with other players is very attractive to watch. The internet certainly has its favorites, but each member of the main or secondary core works well for the series' suspense to linger until the plot resolves. The episode that most reinforces this is fifth, “gganbu“. It's no wonder it's the highest rated episode in the IMDb, with 9.4 points. That's where the performances shine the most.

K-Drama's Slips 4puk

K-Drama knows how to engage the narrative very well, but it doesn't know how to close certain cores. (Image: Netflix/Disclosure)

In view of all the positive sides of Round 6, there are some moments when the slips do not escape the public's view. Starting with the occasional conveniences of the script, although nothing comes close to spoiling the experience. In particular, one that is very discernible and happens towards the end of the series. The fate of two characters do not live up to their trajectories throughout the episodes. And this is not some kind of favoritism, but rather the recognition of a clear and lazy solution that the producers found to contemplate an ending already outlined this season.

Some hooks are not very clear and the series seems to know how to describe them very well at the beginning, but not how to solve them at the end. Given the viral character of Round 6, it is likely that Netflix will seek renewal for an season. If this is the case, it will be once again where a season series is unnecessarily extended — and at no one's request.

Is Round 6 worth watching? 651s6

On the cusp of becoming Netflix's highest-rated production, Round 6 is a good dose of adrenaline and entertainment. (Image: Netflix/Disclosure)

The answer is yes. There are many virals on the internet of questionable quality, but this is not the case. Round 6 is a good quality series that knows what it wants and how it wants to tell its story. Although it has small slips, the production manages to deliver captivating characters and a story that seeks to make a critique through the horror of human actions under the pressure of social, political and economic extremism.

Round 6 it is also proof of the quality of Asian productions that, in recent times, have conquered more and more Brazilian fans, including on other platforms, such as cinema and music. Alice in borderland, another Netflix series, has a similar plot in which people have to survive in video game disputes in a parallel version of Tokyo. Worth checking out more!
