Bought a keyboard and don't know what ABNT and ABNT2 mean? We prepared this guide for you, check it out!

The demand for computers has grown a lot in the last year, due to the pandemic. More people are in need of mice, monitors and keyboards, and this last peripheral may have some problems when installed, for example, if it is international. Some keyboards may have settings in ABNT and ABNT2, and this may be different from what the expects. For you to better understand these settings, the differences in patterns and much more, we have prepared this special for you better understanding.  5g326u

What are keyboard patterns? 295513

Every keyboard sold in Brazil follows the model QWERTY. This name is due to the sequence of the first 6 letters of the alphabetic keyboard: Q, W, E, R, T e Y. This model was created in 1870 by Christopher Sholes, with the intention of being a standard that aimed to facilitate typing on typewriters, since the 3 pairs of letters that make up this sequence were and are the most used in the English language.

Typewriter
The QWERTY layout was first introduced on typewriters.

Another standard for locating letters on keyboards is the QWERTY, used most of the time in French-speaking countries. Its name is also a reference to the sequence of letters in the first row of keys. On the AZERTY keyboard, the Q and W keys and the A and Z keys are swapped in relation to the QWERTY, and the letter M is moved to the second row.

However, outside the alphabetic keyboard there are two standards sold in Brazil: the ABNT and ABNT2. For those traumatized by Undergraduate Research, the name of the models refers to what you thought: Brazilian Association of Technical Standards, but instead of demanding margins and the like, it requires that keyboards sold in the country must have certain symbols, such as accents, high numerals and square brackets. The standard recommended by the Association is currently the ABNT2, but the previous model continues to be sold.

There is a third pattern that can be found in Brazil as well, the international . The pattern of layout of the International English (US) keyboard differs from Brazilian standards for not having the “Ç” key and also for having the Enter smaller compared to others layouts.

At first glance, there are not many differences between the two keyboard patterns sold in the country. The layout of the keys in both is the same, both for accents and letters and numbers. However, on keyboards ABNT2, there is the key Alt Gr, on the right side of the spacebar. This key, seen by many as a “dead space” on keyboards, actually has very interesting functions.

Alt gr and the defaults abnt and abnt2
The Alt Gr key, located next to the spacebar, is the main difference between the two patterns.

When the Alt Gr is pressed with a key that has a third function, symbols that do not have a key of their own can be typed. The secondary function of a key becomes active by pressing it with the SHIFT, while the third function is only accessed with Alt Gr. However, it's interesting to note that keyboards are just physical devices, rarely relying on some kind of built-in software. This means that the settings of which default it is can be changed by the operating system, with keyboards of one default being able to be used as if they were of the other default without any problem.

Some of the characters that can be typed thanks to the key Alt Gr are as follows:

  • ¹ – by pressing Alt Gr and pressing the “1” key;
  • ² – by pressing Alt Gr and pressing the “2” key;
  • ³ – by pressing Alt Gr and pressing the “3” key;
  • ª – when pressing Alt Gr and pressing the square brackets and braces key ([ and {);
  • º – by pressing Alt Gr and pressing the square brackets and braces key (] and });
  • § – when pressing Alt Gr and pressing the equal and positive key (= and +);
  • / – when pressing Alt Gr and pressing the “Q” key;
  • ? – by pressing Alt Gr and pressing the “W” key.

Finally, on the international keyboard, the differences are in the location of some keys, with the caret “^” being next to the “6” key and the tilde accent (~) next to the backtick (`), on a single key, which is next to the number “1” at the top of the keyboard.
