Youtubers create functional prototype of clothing worn by characters from the saga with overalls and refrigeration device

I bet that when watching the films in the saga, you've already caught yourself iring the clothes in which the characters in the saga Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya used to survive in the desert, and wondered how exactly they worked, right? To answer this, a team of technology enthusiasts conducted some experiments and even dared to go further: creating the costume inspired by Dune and even check if it would work in real life. Want to know more? Check out all the information about the prototype below! 476d16

What is a costume styler? 5e631e

Costume that transforms bodily fluids into water is one of the main elements within Frank Herbert's narrative (Image: Disclosure)

Em Dune, costume is nothing more than the clothing that fremen are used to using to survive in the desert. It is a fundamental piece of technology for the planet's inhabitants arrakis. But have you ever stopped to think about how it exactly works? After all, it is not just exotic, but quite sustainable.

In the open desert, you wear this filter on your face, this tube in your nostrils with these plugs to ensure a tight fit. You inhale through the mouth filter and exhale through the nasal tube. With a well-functioning Fremen suit, you won't lose more than a thimbleful of moisture a day...

Book excerpt Duneby Frank Herbert

The suit is designed to preserve body water in an extremely arid environment. It is basically forced to be used for survival, since any slight loss of water in the Arrakis environment can be fatal within a few hours. Then, the suit still helps to recover body moisture such as sweat, breath, urine and other bodily waste, and purifies it, turning it into drinking water, which allows the Fremen to live in the desert without any problems.

More specifically, the suit includes filters in the nostrils, a drinking tube, absorbent layers and several water recovery and purification pumps. In addition to its practical function, it also symbolizes the Fremen's adaptation and resistance to the harsh conditions of their planet.

How does the prototype work? 2b4h3b

Dune costume prototype designed by YouTubers

Dune is science fiction and, therefore, it is normal for it to excite the public to want to recreate any new and different element of the universe. It was thinking like this that some YouTubers, engineers on the channel Hacksmith Industries they thought about developing the symbolic costume of the plot in real life. Although no one lives in deserts or in harsh conditions like those presented in the saga, is it possible to develop the costume still and, not only that, make it really work?

For this, a suit of Tyvek with a Dune costume purchased ready-made, with the intention being, at least, to guarantee an aesthetic close to the costume in the story. For those who don't know, Tyvek is a synthetic material composed of high-density polyethylene fibers, known for its strength and durability and used in various industries to protect against particles, liquids and other contaminants.

Therefore, for the suit to function, they used a thermoelectric cooler that transforms the water vapor in the air inside the suit into liquid. Unlike traditional compressors used in refrigerators and air conditioners, for example, this device works in a different way. It is designed to cool computers and other electronics by ing an electrical charge through two different types of metal. When in operation, one side of the device heats up and the other cools down. In other words, it uses the temperature difference between metals to transform air humidity into water droplets.

Soon, the team integrated this cooler into the suit, positioning the cold side inside the suit and the hot side outside. To deal with the 's breathing, they adapted a respirator with a plastic tube that directed exhaled air to the same thermoelectric cooler, working in a similar way to a reverse dehumidifier. So finally, a system to collect the condensed water in a hydration bag inside the suit was developed and supplemented with a water filter purchased from a local sporting goods store.

In short, the suit created generates enough drinking water to drink in small sips, which fulfills its objective, however, it also has its limitations: it can only absorb moisture from the back of the neck. Still, Hacksmith Industries managed to turn a fictional concept into a reality, albeit an imperfect one, demonstrating the viability of innovative ideas with available resources.
