This week we tested the device of the moment: Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone officially with Android 4.0! It is Google's third “model smartphone”. The first was the Nexus One, manufactured by HTC, then came the Nexus S, manufactured by Samsung.
Design and finish: 5t184
The design of the Galaxy Nexus it's amazing. Like its predecessor, it is coated in plastic, but with a dull gray color, which gives the impression that the finish is made of metal. As soon as the screen lights up, the immensity of the screen is impressive. The device is thin and very light, which helps to take away the impression that we are carrying a huge phone. The back is slightly rough, which gives the feeling of being a type of rubber. THE notification LED light It's also a nice new thing. Another thing we noticed right away: the absence of physical buttons on the front. The space is occupied almost entirely by the canvas. There is also no SD slot.
Overall, the phone is very nice and well made. Check out the design photos in the gallery. To see the rest of the review, keep reading…
Screen: h6o65
The Galaxy Nexus is one of the first devices to 720p resolution (1280 x 720 pixels), with a 4.65-inch screen. It looks like a lot, but the device is thin and the edges are short. With this, the impression is that the device does not seem so big when held in the hand or placed in the pocket. The screen has technology Super AMOLED that produces rich colors and consumes little battery. As the resolution is higher, the image is even better than previous devices with the same technology (Galaxy SII and Nexus S, for example). It has special fortified glass, but it is not Gorilla Glass.
Velocity: 6r6b64
O Galaxy Nexus has a processor dual-core TI OMAP 4460 U running at 1.2GHz, and has 1GB of RAM. Probably due to the Android 4.0 ICS optimizations, together with the dual-core processor, this is the fastest Android device we've tested. It's frighteningly fast. Really fast. In more than a week of use, I haven't noticed any signs of sluggishness, even when we perform several actions one after the other.
Camera: 6w1d2c
The device has a rear camera 5.0 megapixels accompanied by LED flash and a front camera of 1.3 megapixels. the camera of Nexus it's the only point on the device that seems to be a little behind the others. My experience with the camera has brought mixed results, often taking excellent photos and at other times taking bad photos, with washed out or blurred colors. The new camera software makes the shots snapped instantly (when there's no need for a flash) and the camera is ready for the next shot. However, in some cases, we have the impression that if the camera had used a little more time to focus correctly, for example, the photo would have come out better.
Anyway, the camera is far from bad, it's on the same level as most handset cameras on the market. The new functions (Instagram-style image editing, native panoramic photo creation, etc) are also very welcome. The device can also shoot in 1080p, which is still not common in Android smartphones, especially in Brazil.
Software: 31z5c
This is a separate topic because, along with this device, the new version of Android is being released: Ice Cream Sandwich. We made a special post about the ICS with all the news, which you can check here. This handset is Android 4.0 model for the Google and all the novelties are present in it. In this review, I will talk about the impressions I had of ICS and its usability.
- As mentioned before, ICS is Speed. You switch between menus, applications and home screens with ease, without any lag. Part of this speed is in the ICS software itself and not just the hardware, as a preliminary version of ICS was installed on a Nexus S and the speed gain was also noticeable.
- the ICS is nice. The interfaces have all been redesigned, the new Roboto font is being used, the screen transitions are smoother. There are small changes that make a difference, for example now when we change the orientation of the device, the screen actually rotates to the new orientation, which did not happen before. In addition, the menus, and the way of navigating screens and options are much more Tablet-like. Who has used a tablet with Honeycomb you will feel at home.
- Os s became easier to manage, we were able to merge s more easily and they are better organized in the calendar. Integration with Google+ is also interesting.
- As settings became more organized. It's easier and more intuitive to find the configuration you want.
- O task Manager and notification bar, both revamped, are more useful and you find yourself using them all the time.
The ICS is certainly an example of innovation in of today's mobile software. Once it is distributed on more devices, it will have a positive impact on Android smartphone sales.
Battery: 4q1j4i
The device tested was the GSM version (HSPA+) which is the same one that will be used in Brazil. With moderate use (a few calls, a little gaming, some google maps searches and a lot of whatsapp), the battery had a very satisfactory performance, lasting around 14-16 horas. Unfortunately, the operator used does not provide 2G network, which would make the battery last even longer. Like any Android smartphone, battery performance still lags behind compared to iPhone, but it's certainly not a concern on this device.
Price and availability: 1n3l53
O Galaxy Nexus has just been approved by the Anatel as we show here. However, there is still no release forecast or prices for Brazil. The version we reviewed was purchased in Canada, where the device retails for $169 with a 3-year contract or $649 without a contract.

Conclusion: 4l495g
O Galaxy Nexus it's an amazing device. High end hardware, very nice design, unbeatable software. Some people may find it too big, but when held in the hand, it's smaller than it looks. Unfortunately we do not have an estimated arrival date in Brazil, so only buying in other countries. But comparing the price abroad and the qualities, we recommend it!
