History 6r4t5f

Paul Mescal is the protagonist Lucius Verus, who is the youngest son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), consequently grandson of the former emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), as seen in the first film. As portrayed in “Gladiator” (2000), Lucilla sends Lucius to Numidia, a coast located in northern Africa, for protection from the Roman Empire. Therefore, in “Gladiator 2”, it is a future sequence of this event.

25 years have ed and Lucius has grown up without his mother and completely alone, still with an unknown resentment for what motivated Lucilla to do this to her own son. Even so, Lucius lived his peaceful life alongside his new family: his wife and son. Until Roman conquerors invade Numidia, as it is one of the only surviving civilizations of Rome's wrath and greed. Numidia is decimated and Lucius, as well as other men with greater physical appearance, are taken as prisoners to Rome.

The person leading the attack is General Marcus Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal. According to the actor, the general is “a different person, a fighter who learned from the best. He is a very, very good general, which could mean a very good assassin.” He is a typical coldly evil character, who lets himself be carried away by circumstances, as Ridley Scott pointed out to Vanity Fair.

As soon as Lucius arrives in Rome as a prisoner who will have to fight for his life in the arena, the character comes across his mother, to his shock, in the royal box next to General Marcus, mastermind and leader of the operation that killed his family. and your home. In Gladiator 2, Lucilla finds the comfort of Marcus' love as relief from the pain of losing her son, in which the character does not know that she survived - and that she is in the arena -, nor the bloody and hateful relationship between the two.

With his past trumping his present, Lucius is motivated to seek revenge for his family, whatever the cost.

“What human beings will do to survive, but also what human beings will do to win. We see it in the arena, but also in the political struggle that's happening outside of my character's storyline, where you see that there are other characters fighting and pulling for power. Where is the space for humanity? Where is the space for love, for family connection? And ultimately, will these things overcome this kind of greed and power? These things are often in direct conflict with each other.”

Paul Mescal, about the narrative of “Gladiator 2” to Vanity Fair.

Entering the political core of Rome two decades after the events of “Gladiator”, the first images of “gladiator 2” revealed the characters and their characterizations of Denzel Washington, Fred Hechinger (Thelma) and Joseph quinn.

Denzel is Macrinus, an “arms dealer who supplies food to the armies of Europe, supplies wine and oil, manufactures steel, spears, guns, cannons and catapults”, in other words, a very rich and diplomatically powerful figure. According to what Scott reveals to the magazine, Macrinus “collects” warriors – and must cling to Lucius for his income.

Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger are the twin brothers Emperor Caracalla and Emperor Geta, respectively, as the nickname itself symbolizes, the current rulers of Rome, despite their youthfulness. Added to the plot as a parallel and pessimistic version of the tale of Romulus and Remus, created by the Capitoline She-Wolf – symbols of Rome -, director and screenwriter Ridley Scott defines them as “damaged goods since birth”. They are brutal, cruel and inattentive political figures, who control General Marcus Acácio through threats to Lucilla's physical integrity.

In the images revealed by Vanity Fair, it is possible to see many of Lucius' fight scenes, which appear to be the first scenes involving the plot of Lucius' return to Rome and his first duel with other prisoners of war. One in particular being an individual battle between the characters of Paul Mescal and Pedro Pascal.

The film gained prominence at Cinemacon, which took place between March and April this year. According to the press and festival guests, the film should be around two hours and forty minutes long. Experts said that “gladiator 2" it's a movie similar to its predecessor, but which stands on its own legs, with a basic but exciting revenge story.
