Platform integrates new Project Athena phase and will serve as a seal of quality for notebooks

Imagine what life would be like if we could use notebooks with the same ease and mobility that our cell phones offer. The proposal of Athena Project (or "Project Athena“, original name), from Intel, is to make this possible. And the company launched the Intel Evo seal, which inaugurated the second generation of the project, this Wednesday (02) in a virtual event. 4w3i18

In practice, the Intel Evo will work as a seal of quality, linked to Project Athena, for notebooks from different manufacturers. Thus, devices that meet the Athena criteria will be identified by the seal.

“The goal is to develop a new class of notebooks verified by Intel.”

Josh Newman, vice president and general manager of PC Innovation at Intel.

Intel also presented at the event the 11th generation Intel Core processors (Tiger Lake), aimed at thin and light notebooks.

What is Project Athena? 205t5p

Project Athena is an Intel innovation program for notebooks

In short, it is an innovation program by Intel aimed at notebooks. According to the company, the overall idea of the project is to reimagine the way these notebooks are developed, built and supplied. In other words, the project basically aims to redefine the experience of notebook s.

The objective is to determine the quality parameters for the development of portable computers as advanced that they allow access as fast as what you do when using your smartphone, for example.

No Athena Project, Intel brings together ideas to meet the main connectivity and mobility needs of s. Through this project, the company tries to insert all the advantages of a smartphone into notebooks, while maintaining the characteristics of a computer. Thus, Intel determines a minimum set of features, with a focus on autonomy and connectivity, for notebooks to be considered .

One of the first innovations announced by Intel for this purpose were the ultrabooks, which considerably reduced the weight and increased the performance of notebook computers.

This is important to because you can say that Athena currently determines a set of hardware that meets specific requirements in a similar way as ultrabooks have been doing for years.

Project Athena focuses on improving experience with notebooks

Now, the Athena Project wants to go further, exploring what it takes for notebook models to be always connected (to compete with PCs “always connected” by Qualcomm), even though they are compact and come in a variety of formats (for example, models with two screens).

The intention is to ensure the development of notebooks that you can take out of your backpack anywhere and it will always be ready for use. Just like your smartphone, when you take it out of your pocket.

For this, the main focuses are on features such as:

  • Connectivity: the 5G network will allow access to be made much faster and more securely anywhere with coverage for that network. It will even be possible to stream 4K content through this mobile network, for example;
  • Instant on: this feature promises the end of that long wait between the moment you hit the power button and the moment you can actually use the computer. This will allow for almost immediate use.

In addition to guiding equipment and component manufacturers when producing the devices, the company carries out very thorough tests to audit notebooks.

Research that underpins Project Athena 1k2h3r

The project's quality assessment criteria were developed based on an extensive survey, carried out by Intel between 2019 and 2020, on the profiles of s who use this type of notebook, how they use it and what they use it for.

At first, the study considered the profiles of students, entrepreneurs, content creators and freelance professionals. Then, the focus shifted to employees of companies who work from home.

“The new level established by the Athena Project came from studies that sought to anticipate people's demands and expectations regarding their notebooks.”

Jim Johnson, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Customer Engineering at Intel
Intel Research Determines Criteria for Project Athena Thresholds

In times of pandemic and social distance, the company found that the use of notebooks is closely linked to the routine of s at home. In addition, the demand for the use of the device has increased, thanks to the increase in remote work and distance learning.

According to Melissa Gregg – a senior engineer at Intel specializing in ethnography and social sciences who led the research – the study was completely focused on how s use the devices, so that they could then think about ways to improve that experience, in the current situation. context.

According to Intel research, people are using their laptops for just about everything from work-related tasks to leisure and keeping in touch with family and friends (whether through video calls or social media). Consequently, these s are more dependent on the quality and performance that their notebooks offer.

Thus, the Athena Project strictly dictates that notebooks deliver an exceptional experience for these s. It also determines what this “exceptional experience” would be.

When the device is approved, it gains a kind of certification, which assures consumers that the product really has the qualities it claims to have.

The novelty is that now Intel will explore this certification in a more commercial way, which, consequently, will make it clearer to the consumer what this “quality seal” means. That's where the Intel Evolution.

Intel Evo Seal will work as a 'quality seal'

The main advance of the company that is in line with the Athena Project is the Intel Evo platform, which will also function as a “seal of quality” and inaugurate a new era of design. notebooks based on this new platform are the latest designs in the company's innovation program.

It is important to note that the Intel Evo is not a new architecture or a new chip. It is a commercial (and more visible) way to validate notebooks that are part of Project Athena. Until then, when a device was approved by the project this was not clear in the product.

According to Intel, the main features of this new class of notebooks will be:

  • Instant device activation;
  • Battery with autonomy of nine hours or more (considering Full HD screens);
  • Autonomy of at least four hours for a recharge of up to 30 minutes;
  • Consistent performance even when the notebook is not plugged in.

To receive the seal Intel Evolution, devices must also feature the new 11th Gen Intel Core processors (Tiger Lake) with Intel Iris X graphics, Thunderbolt 4 connectivity (which speeds up file transfers) and Intel Wi-Fi 6 (Gig+), which offers connectivity three times faster, according to the manufacturer.

“Every Project Athena Intel Evo notebook will offer the best connectivity and battery life solutions.”

Josh Newman, vice president and general manager of PC Innovation at Intel

In addition, Intel dictates that notebooks must offer high-fidelity microphones and speakers, which is primarily aimed at improving the quality of video calls.

Laptops with Intel Evo seal should be launched in 2020

According to the company, the first notebooks to receive the new seal should be launched later this year. According to Josh Newman, an executive at Intel, the expectation is that the Athena expected to have up to twenty new notebook designs on the Intel Evo platform in 2020.

According to the company, these notebooks were developed in partnership with the main manufacturers in the world market. Are they:

  • maple;
  • asus;
  • Dell;
  • Dynabook;
  • HP;
  • Lenovo;
  • LG;
  • M: YES;
  • Razer?
  • Samsung.

11th generation of Intel Core processors

Another important announcement made by Intel at the virtual event was the 11th generation of Intel Core processors, called “Tiger Lake”. Available in nine versions (i3, i5 and i7), the processors of this new generation had their graphics card updated and now have artificial intelligence tools to improve the notebook's performance and, consequently, the experience.

Among the innovations presented at the event, the main highlight was the speed of the processors. According to Boyd Phelps, vice president of Engineering at Intel, the new generation of the manufacturer has a performance four times higher than competing processors.

The new generation Tiger lake also had the graphic part improved. Intel Iris X graphics perform better than 90% of ultra-thin notebooks on the market today, according to Intel. The manufacturer explained that the silicons added to the card provide greater graphics performance during gameplay as well.

O showmetech accompanied the presentation of 11th generation of Intel Core processors and explains the news and improvements of the new line.
