Motorola has done an exceptional job on the razr 40 Ultra. The fluidity of the screens and the system are a high point, in addition to the very high quality of construction. Come see the device

There are those who say that year after year cell phones have evolved little or nothing and generated less excitement. Knowing this, in 2019 the Motorola presented the world with its first mobile phone with a folding screen. It worked: with the nostalgic design of the motorola razr v3, many people commented on the device and even celebrities who use iPhone — such as DJ and producer Diplo — migrated to the device. And this year the line gained two new versions, the Razr 40 and razr 40 ultra. 25225o

The smartphone is full of dots very positives, such as pOLED screens that reach up to an incredible 165Hz, clean system with exceptional performance and the battery that really lasts a long time. But it is not without some problems, one of them is very complicated — in my opinion.

quick unboxing 6s5a3s

It's a device and this is clear even by the box, black with holographic details, reminiscent of luxury items! When you take it out of the box, scented with an exclusive scent from the company, it feels like you're holding a piece of jewelry. Comes with the 33W TurboPower adapter, USB-C cable and case. You don't need anything else to use the device safely. super thanks, Motorola.

The cell phone is wrapped in paper with a very important message that we are going to replicate to prevent the unwary from making mistakes:

⚠️

To ensure better protection, your phone already comes with a screen protector installed, so please do not use third-party skins. Doing so will void the device's warranty. See the quick start guide inside the box for more screen care information.

I've seen people who removed it and chipped it. Then the warning: do not remove it or put another film on the inner screen of a foldable cell phone.

Design 145g70

I wanted to open the design topic with this close up of the rear so you can see how well built the razr 40 Ultra is. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

O razr 40 ultra it's the first foldable I've seen without the famous crease in the visible screen fold. It even has it, but it's almost imperceptible, even ing your finger you can't tell that the screen folds. A Motorola did a great job here. With use, the screen becomes marked, since the device is most of the time bent.

Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

The external part is practically all made up of the screen, and that makes the razr 40 ultra the device with the largest external screen among devices in the same category today. When it's off, or showing the clock/display , it's almost impossible to tell where is the screen and where isn't, it's so well done. Screen utilization is truly remarkable.

Look how the screen behaves when the phone is folded. Image: Motorola Disclosure

The hinge is another delight, it is very smooth to open and close and, thanks to the “zero gap” closing system, the upper and lower edges align perfectly. O razr 40 ultra it is completely closed, without the “gap” that the Galaxy Z Fold line presents. This helps Motorola's device become the thinnest among folding devices, a merit of the company's engineering team that perfected it.

See it compared to Z Fold3 (we already have a review) The difference between the crease on the canvas:

Comparison between the crease on the screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the razr 40 Ultra. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

It fits in any pocket — even small ones — and it's fun to take it out. Unlike traditional cell phones that are in the same position, the razr 40 ultra it keeps spinning in your pocket and you never know what position it will be in when you take it out

The fingerprint sensor is on the power button, just below the volume buttons and it works perfectly, it's very fast and better than the sensor on the Z Fold3. Speaking of buttons, the Motorola did something here that I had seen in the iPad mini 6 (which I already reviewed): When you change the orientation of the device, the system changes the functions of the buttons. That is: if you have the phone open, the bottom and top buttons decrease and increase the volume, but when you fold it, the buttons reverse, and the system recognizes this and executes it correctly. It's simple, but shows the company's concern for details, even small ones.

The choice of materials reinforces that it is a , there are 4 different materials that are in harmony with each other. At the front we have Gorilla Glass Victus glass, its sides are in 7000 series aluminum alloy, vegan leather back and stainless steel hinge. It is possible to buy it in black, blue, and vivid magenta. The coating is water-repellent, but works like a magnet for fingerprints — if you don't like marked devices, be prepared.

eye-popping screens 5b521s

Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

In a nutshell, this screen offers super-fast response, great definition of image in several angles and very high contrasts with very thin edges. As it is a pOLED screen, we have the famous deep black.

See the highlights:

  • Main 6,9 inches with 9×22 aspect ratio and external 3,63 inches, both pOLED type
  • 165Hz on internal display and 144Hz on external display
  • HDR10 and 1 billion colors
  • Brightness of 1400 nits (peak) on the internal screen and 1100 nits (peak) on the external one
  • FHD+ resolution (1080 x 2640) on the main and 1056 x 1066 on the external
  • External and internal screen glass in Gorilla Glass Victus
Motorola razr 40 Ultra review: eye-popping screens

Entitled of flexview, the feature allows the to position the razr 40 ultra from multiple angles, finding new ways to interact, capture and create. Taking pictures without using your hands, pictures without a tripod, are some of the possibilities. I hope more app developers take advantage of the possibilities of foldable screens and release more features to exploit them.

Motorola created little games for you to play on the external screen. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

While developers don't move, the Motorola invested heavily in creating uses and solutions for the external screen, and from there you can do several exclusive and very practical things. It is possible to find:

  • A dedicated player Spotify;
  • Own games (I found myself playing several times);
  • Calendar
  • Weather forecast
  • Make calls
  • Open and use apps
  • 9 customization options and lock screen layout;

In very bright environments, especially with direct sunlight, it can be a little difficult to see things.

The screens are beautiful to see and use, it's really eye-popping! Before testing the razr 40 ultra I believed that the difference between 120Hz and 165Hz would be imperceptible, but the impression I got is that things are really smoother and smoother. It could also be due to the super fluid system with the screen, but the result is very pleasant.

Motorola razr 40 Ultra review: eye-popping screens

If you're using an app on the external screen, when you open the phone the same app will be open, offering a continuous experience, just like on the Z Fold line. It's very practical! You can activate or deactivate which apps will have this continuity function, as well as choose which ones will have their icons displayed on the external screen.

Cameras 353z5z

Motorola razr 40 Ultra review: eye-popping screens

Nothing is perfect and we come to the main weakness of the razr 40 ultra. If having a good camera on a cell phone is something important to you, go for another device.

The summary of the opera is: although they have a lot of sharpness and the portrait mode works very well, most of the photos come out lifeless, washed out, with little saturation. Maybe I'm just used to the cameras on the Samsung in which the photos come out with more color and life. I use one Galaxy S22 (I already did the review too) and put some pictures to compare.

Was a telephoto missing? I would say yes! For me a telephoto lens is more important than an ultrawide. Who knows in the future the manufacturers will change the type of lens of the second camera and put the second lens as the telephoto and not the ultra-angular?

rear camera specs 5p535l

  • Main Camera: 12 MP, Lens 79,5°, aperture f/1,59 | ISO
  • Ultra-wide & Macro Hybrid Camera: 13 MP, 108° lens, f/2,2 aperture
  • Digital Zoom: 8x
  • Video capture: Ultra HD 4K (60 fps), Full HD (60 fps)

One of the biggest benefits of the external screen is the possibility of using it to take selfies with the rear cameras. To take photos lying down, I didn't know if I'd have to do it with the cell phone horizontally or vertically, but regardless of the way, they will always be square, with 9,1 MP (3024 × 3024), I found it very practical.

See a comparison between the cameras of the razr 40 ultra and Galaxy S22 for you, since it is not an exaggeration when I say that the photos are washed on the Motorola (click on the magnifying glass to see it better):

The photos of razr 40 ultra are sharper, but come out lifeless. I'm already white, I turned pale (but pretty clear haha)

Portrait mode separates the planes very well and you have the effect bokeh (when the background is blurred) looks pretty cool.

Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

One feature that stood out to me is the super slow motion which records at 960fps. A tip is to use this feature in situations with a lot of light, because naturally when activating the feature the image will be dark and this happens on any device, unfortunately.

You can alleviate this scenario by editing the settings in the Pro Mode, present and very welcome, by the way. In Pro Mode you can control shutter, focus, ISO, temperature and more. But let's face it, it's not practical at all to configure the camera before each click, right?

macro mode 45z2j

The ultrawide camera can be used as a macro lens, however, the practical result may leave something to be desired. See below.

It's an extra resource, it's like a bonus for situations, but it doesn't produce the same result as the line's macro mode iPhone Pro.

night photos 4r4c1v

Make no mistake, the photo didn't record the colors accurately. They are much less saturated than in person. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

If things aren't good during the day, they get worse at night. Since my Razr XT 910, back in 2012, I noticed that the photos tended to be greenish, especially at night. The same is true here. In low light situations, the cell phone cannot balance the colors, which are very distorted in the photos.

Night mode keeps the shutter open for 1 second, unlike the up to 5 seconds we see Samsung cell phones or iPhones do in the same mode. In this way, Motorola's foldable photos are less blurred but also darker.

In very colorful and well-lit situations, the photos of the razr 40 ultra at night they are very good.

This was one of my favorite shots taken with the razr 40 Ultra. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

Frontal camera 1m5k5l

The front camera surprised. Very sharp images, with good saturation and the portrait mode is impeccable. Considering the limitations of front cameras, I'd say it stands out from the rear.

Front camera specs 221f2l

  • Main Front Camera: 32 MP, 80,5° lens, f/2,45 aperture
  • Video Capture: Ultra HD 4K (30 fps)

The camera combines 4 pixels to form one, so in theory this makes the photos have more light and information. This may be why they are more saturated than the photos from the rear camera (even in the same situations).

Portrait mode generates one of the best results for those with curly hair. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

The front camera's portrait mode also works very well, I think it's the razr 40 ultra is one of the devices that best performs the feature. I have curly hair and it's very difficult for software to be able to blur the background and highlight my hair in the foreground without looking weird, and the camera here did it the best I've ever seen.

Processor, hardware and sound 4f5y2j

Excellent specs! Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

Here we have another difference between the Razr 40 and razr 40 ultra. The most basic model comes with the intermediate processor Snapdragon 7 Gen1, while the Ultra version brings the beefy Snapdragon 8+ Gen1. It comes with 8 GB of RAM memory, which is enough for a cell phone, but for those who want more (I don't know why), the Motorola sells it with an option of up to 12 GB and even has the option of RAM Boost, which is when you use the storage as RAM.

The main highlights are:

  • SoC Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 (3,2 GHz Octa-Core) 4 nm, with Adreno 730 GPU
  • 8 GB or 12 GB LPDDR5 + RAM Boost
  • 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS 3.1 type storage

Despite not being the latest chipset from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is capable of running any game and doing any task and will not be dated for at least 3 or 4 years. I'm not a fan of apps benchmarking, I believe that usability counts more than test numbers, but here is the score on tests like AnTuTu and others, as GMSArena points out:

  • AnTuTu: 975461 points (v9)
  • GeekBench: 3645 points (v5.1), 4045 (v6)
  • GFXBench: 65fps (ES 3.1 onscreen)

The experience is more than satisfactory and, to be honest, these points are of little use in everyday life. Furthermore, the razr 40 Ultra is packed with good specs. ing heavy content on it is almost instantaneous thanks to Wi-Fi 6E. See the other specifications of the device:

  • WiFi 6E
  • NFC
  • Bluetooth 5.3
  • IP52 certified

Having very good Bluetooth 5.3, the latency between playing/pausing and the music stopping is almost imperceptible.

Motorola razr 40 Ultra review: eye-popping screens

About the sound, the razr 40 ultra it has stereo speakers positioned at the top of the screen and at the bottom, next to the USB-C connector. The sound quality is very pleasant, partly due to the merit of the Dolby Atmos gift. Whether listening to music, watching movies and series, or even listening to your mother's audio, the sound is really immersive, especially when the device is open and you feel the sound coming from different directions. When it is closed, the sound only comes out from below, where the 2 speakers will be. It's not bad, it's still good, but in a different way.

amazing battery 224ya

O razr 40 ultra has for charging TurboPower of 30W and it is possible to charge it wirelessly, but only at 5W. wow, Motorola, could be a little more, right? It is as a resource for a situation where you are without a cable and there is an induction charger nearby. In the box comes the 33W adapter.

There are 3.800 mAh of capacity, the same amount as the Galaxy Z Flip4 and 1000 mAh more than the previous Motorola razr. The battery really lasts all day. Whether watching videos, accessing social media or moderate gaming, you'll get to the end of the day with some battery. The system does great management and no resources are being used unnecessarily. Congratulations on the job, Motorola!

Another difference between the two models and the company's choice of placing a larger battery on the mid-range smartphone and a smaller one on the model is curious. . But in practice, the razr 40 ultra it manages to stay unplugged for more than 15 hours and with less than 1 hour and a half you can recharge it completely.

System 2u6f5q

Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

It comes from the factory with Android 13 practically pure. Among the few changes that the Motorola did, we have the famous and fabulous gesture controls, something I miss on devices from Samsung. It's super easy to open the camera or flashlight just by shaking your phone, you don't even have to touch the screen. This is great for situations where your hand is dirty or wet, for example.

There is still no information on how many years of software and security updates will be offered. Perhaps the device will even receive Android 15 or 16, whoever lives will see.

ready for 5n2613

It works amazingly well! Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

I'm ionate about products that add functions and become more useful and versatile and I've wanted to test the ready for, platform of Motorola that turns the cell phone system into a computer on an external screen, very similar to the DeX mode da Samsung.

I tried to use it by connecting the monitor to an HDMI adapter, but I couldn't even mirror the screen. I tested it on 2 adapters and it didn't work. Then I discovered that you can install Ready For on Windows, which left me a little confused, as I always imagined that this type of resource was an alternative for when you only have a TV, or monitor, without a computer.

I have here the Nreal Air (we already have a review), augmented reality glasses, I tried to connect via USB-C cable and nothing appeared on the glasses screen either.

I gave up trying to make it work via cable (and without being on the PC) and tried to connect wirelessly on Chromecast 4, it also didn't work. I considered that the Ready For application was in an outdated version, but to my surprise, it was already in the most recent version.

I decided to use Ready For installed on the computer and it offers some integration possibilities between the cell phone and the PC that DeX from Samsung does not offer. When ing the app Ready For on Windows you may:

  • streaming apps – Use mobile apps on PC screen
  • Workspace – Use the computer screen to use the phone in a different interface
  • Mirror mobile screen – Do you want to use your cell phone on your PC? Here you can.
  • Webcam - Yes! Use your cell phone camera in your video calls
  • Get files from mobile – One more way to send files from your cell phone to your PC
  • Router – To access the internet from the cell phone on the PC.

Screen mirroring via Ready For, even wirelessly, is much better than via wired Samsung Flow. I don't know how to Motorola managed to do this on the razr 40 Ultra, but it's fabulous. It doesn't have any hiccups, it's very dynamic, in a way that I didn't imagine it would be, EVEN WITHOUT WIRELESS!

I also used the Wireless Desktop mode for some time and was again impressed by the speed of execution and the time to load files. The interface is very reminiscent of DeX, but it has some secrets that using it you'll discover, I won't go into more detail.

The list of mobile phones compatible with the Ready For is on the website of Motorola. It is worth ing that some of the features of Ready For for Windows can be used on any Android cell phone via Link to Windows, native to the operating system, and that it can be ed from the Google Play Store.

Price 4t2ce

The external screen animations are very cute. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

outside the razr 40 ultra it was announced for US$ 1.000, something around R$ 4.787 in direct conversion, and arrived here for an incredible R$ 7.999. It's a pretty salty value, bordering the top-of-the-line iPhones, and we hope it drops in the coming months.

Conclusion 60664y

Motorola razr 40 ultra review: eye-popping screens. Motorola has done an exceptional job on the razr 40 ultra. The fluidity of the screens and the system are a high point, in addition to the very high quality of construction. Come see the device
For the price, you can pick up another foldable, be it the Galaxy Z Flip4, its direct competitor, or the Z Fold3. Photo: César Marcos/Showmetech

It's a fascinating cell phone. If it wasn't for the price and the cameras, I would definitely have it. For the price being sold, you can buy countless other devices with very high technical specifications. When compared to the Galaxy Z Flip4, its direct competitor, the Motorola device has many superior specifications, but loses in others, mainly the camera.

I personally have a great affection for the Motorola not only for revolutionizing the world by inventing the cell phone 50 years ago (the Dynatac 8000X, from Motorola, was the first commercially produced mobile phone in April 1973), but my first smartphone was the Razr XT910 that I won in the promotion “smartphone already“, and that had Selton Melo as a poster boy — good memories, I must say.

It was (and I think it still is) one of the thinnest devices in the world, it already came with a Super AMOLED screen, the first Gorilla Glass on the market, splash protection, Kevlar back — YES! The material used in bulletproof vests — came in a super complete kit with charger, headphones and even an adapter to connect to the TV. It was this beauty below:

11 years later and I'm back using a device from the brand and the same line. And why did I want to share this memory? To reinforce that the company has always been at the forefront of changes in the world and anticipating trends. And also because even 11 years later, a small problem with the camera is still present.
