A Motorola showed the concept of a mobile phone with a rollable screen that, at the press of a button, your screen gets higher – and the wallpaper follows the change. The teaser was shown during the Tech World 2022, virtual event of Lenovo held this Tuesday (18). 566g1g

The demo video shown by Motorola only shows the expansion happening – that is, the company chose, at this time, not to go into technical and functional details about the model, which still does not have an official name. What is known is that the smartphone's rollable screen is a flexible OLED that goes from four inches (more compact than an iPhone 13 Mini) to 6,5 inches (nearly the size of an iPhone 14 Pro Max).

The cell phone display follows the announcement of the third generation of Motorola Razr, held in August, and serves as the latest example of how brands have been experimenting with ways to change the concept of smartphones.

The mechanics themselves are nothing new. Other brands such as LG e Samsung, also showed smartphone projects with a rollable screen.

But, in the case of these brands, they were cell phone models in which the screens increased to the sides, so that the smartphones were transformed into a “tablet mode”, such as the Galaxy Z Fold from Samsung. What drew attention – and is new – in the concept of this new model from Motorola is that the screen grows upwards, not sideways.

At the press of a button, the smartphone goes from the size of a compact cell phone to the size considered normal for a cell phone nowadays. And in addition to the wallpaper, the teaser showed that other types of content, such as YouTube videos, would adapt during the size transition.

The demonstration of the new roll-up display phone adds a model to Motorola's portfolio of “different” display phones. That's because, recently, the brand launched the new Razr, which has a folding screen.

Only, during the Lenovo event, Motorola did not specify when this new model (and proposed, by the way) smartphone should hit the market. Using as an example Samsung's demonstration of the concept of cell phones with foldable screens and the arrival of Galaxy z fold to the market, you can expect the launch of this rollable screen phone from Motorola to take some time.

Lenovo also showed the concept of a notebook with a roll-up display at Tech World 2022 (Image: Reproduction/Lenovo)

The cell phone demo was actually part of a teaser that was dedicated to “rollable technology”. In addition to the smartphone, Motorola showed the concept of a notebook with a rollable screen – which also expands upwards, not sideways.

As with the cell phone, the company did not go into technical and functional details. But in the video, you can see that as the screen grows, the wallpaper also adapts to the new size.

As it is a new laptop proposal, the model's appearance can cause some strangeness. But considering productivity-oriented use, these rollable screens have the potential to enhance the experience.

At least, that's what Lenovo is betting on, as highlighted by the executive vice president and president of the company's Smart Devices Group, Luca Rossi, during the demonstration of the devices at Teci World 2022.

“Form factor innovation is a very dynamic space. You will continue to see Lenovo innovation.”

Luca Rossi, President of the Smart Devices Group at Lenovo
