American space agency officially approves the Dragonfly interplanetary mission, to explore Titan, which is scheduled to launch in 2028

In one of its most ambitious missions, the NASA will send helicopter to the largest of the 145 moons of Saturn, called Titan. Receiving final approval this week, the project is scheduled to be launched in July 2028, with a budget that exceeds US$3,35 billion — equivalent to R$17,33 billion reais at current exchange rates. 306a6d

This moon has aroused the interest of scientists due to its characteristics very similar to those of Earth, including a dense atmosphere and the presence of methane and ethane lakes on its surface. The mission promises to be a milestone in space exploration.

Titan, the largest moon in Saturn, is 5.149,5 km in diameter. In addition to its size, scientists are impressed by its atmospheric conditions. Its dense atmosphere, composed mainly of nitrogen, resembles that of the primitive Earth, offering a favorable environment for the study of prebiotic chemical processes. Furthermore, the presence of lakes of liquid methane and ethane on Titan's surface makes it a natural laboratory for scientific research.

Over the decades, Titan has been an object of fascination for scientists, who have envisioned the possibility of it harboring life forms. Its hydrological cycle, marked by hydrocarbon rains that form geological features similar to those on Earth, such as rivers, lakes and seas, aroused the interest of the scientific community. Furthermore, the data obtained by the probe Cassini revealed the existence of an underground ocean of liquid water, further fueling speculation about the possibility of life on Saturn's largest moon.

In this context, the mission Dragonfly, a NASA initiative designed to explore this type of environment and determine whether Titan is capable of ing life in its depths or on its surface.

The mission Dragonfly represents an ambitious undertaking by NASA, designed to investigate the surface and atmosphere of Titan using a cutting-edge robotic helicopter, similar to a drone. Named Dragonfly, this helicopter is equipped with a variety of state-of-the-art scientific instruments and will carry out a series of flights and landings, collecting samples and conducting scientific analyses.

Dragonfly, the dragonfly of aerospace engineering, is equipped with a highly advanced propulsion system. Weighing around 450 kg, the vehicle has four pairs of double blades, each approximately one meter in diameter. Designed to operate in a low gravity environment and dense atmosphere, such as that of Titan, the helicopter will reach average speeds of 36 km/h, allowing it to travel great distances between sites of scientific interest.

During its 32-month mission, Dragonfly will carry out a series of exploratory flights, covering an area of more than 174 km, establishing itself as the most daring vehicle ever sent to investigate the surface of a celestial body beyond Earth. The main objective of this endeavor is to study the chemical processes on Titan and determine whether the conditions present on the moon can, in fact, life.

Instruments on board, such as the Drill for Acquisition of Complex Organisms (DrACO) and Dragonfly Mass Spectrometer (DraMS), play an important role in investigating the chemical elements of the moon, looking for signs of processes prebiotics and possible biosignatures.

The mission launch Dragonfly The probe is expected to arrive on Titan in 2034. During its journey, Dragonfly will face a series of challenges, from crossing the vast distance between Earth and Saturn to entering Titan's dense atmosphere.

Once there, the helicopter will begin its exploration, navigating the moon and conducting analyzes of its surface. Scientists eagerly await the data collected by Dragonfly, hoping it will reveal information about Titan's chemical composition and geology.

“Dragonfly will explore more of Titan than any rover of NASA has already explored on Mars or the Moon”

Nicky Fox, associate for NASA's Science Mission Directorate

Fox also emphasized the importance of this helicopter in pushing the limits of what we can achieve with aerial vehicles outside of Earth. Dragonfly is estimated to cover more than 174 km throughout its mission, an area larger than all other rover of NASA combined on Mars and the Moon.

With the completion of the mission Ingenuity em Mars, Dragonfly takes the forefront of innovation, promising to open new frontiers in the search for life on other planetary bodies. Representing an important milestone in this quest, the Dragonfly mission will expand knowledge about the mysteries of the universe, providing deeper insight into the processes that shape other worlds.
