New Augmented Reality Spectacles Are Big Innovation, But They're Only For Developers – For Now

This last Thursday, May 20th, the Snap – the company of the social network Snapchat – revealed new Spectacles, now augmented reality glasses, in a partner summit. Innovating in relation to previous models, the new product has a display for projection on the lenses themselves and several novelties in of hardware and software, but with one caveat: it is only available to partner developers of the platform. In this article, we will unravel this novelty. 521e29

Right away, a differential of the new version of the glasses is the size. Based on the large augmented reality helmets of other companies, the fact that the new Shows able to create the effect on a small device is impressive. For this to be possible, a processor is used. Qualcomm Snapdragon XR1, which powers dual 3D waveguide displays, with 2 RGB cameras, 4 microphones, 2 stereo speakers and a touchpad on the side.

The new spectacles have a lighter, more understated design, with good hardware for their size - but at a price.

The weight is 134 grams, more than double compared to the previous model, but taking into everything the device does new, it is a trade-offs which is very much worth it. Previously, the Shows they didn't have a display to reproduce the augmented reality effects – which limited the glasses to being a simple camera system for photos and videos, which could only be viewed and worked on other devices; they were sunglasses with a camera in the corner, basically.

Previous models of spectacles were aimed only at capturing images and videos, without being able to view them on the device itself.

Now, augmented reality lenses can reproduce the effects in real time (with 15 milliseconds of photon latency, i.e. viewing range) with up to 2000 Nits of brightness, to allow the glasses to be used both indoors as external. The device's field of view is 26,3 degrees, which is not bad for a wearable of that caliber. The only problem is the battery – to be able to do all this, the new Shows have only 30 minutes of use per charge.

Well, what really matters is the features, isn't it? Well, as we've already mentioned, the new product is designed so that augmented reality effects producers can create effects and shape experiences with technology. For this, it uses the Snap Spatial Engine, which the company says brings six degrees of freedom with hand, marker and surface tracking, “overlaying creators’ imaginations on the world in a new way.” In practice, the effects can be designed and modified the way they will be experienced – right in front of the eyes.

All this will be used so that the new Shows able to map and reproduce the effects in a way that does not obstruct the real elements of the scenery, and the built-in microphones will be used so that the creator can interact with the glasses via voice commands. In addition, there is integration with the lens studio, application of Snap for desktop, where developers and creators can create Lenses (as the company calls the effects in augmented reality) and send them to the glasses, via wireless.

Among the new features is the so-called Connected Lenses, that allows visualization and interaction with the same effect by several different people, allowing a collective work and experience for s. And since the focus of the release is the effects developers, the Snap is launching an “innovation lab” in augmented reality – called Ghost – and disbursing no less than US$3.5 million (approximately R$19 million) in of creators, in addition to US$ 1 million (approximately R$5.3 million) in funding for the Verizon, to augmented reality experiences via 5G.

Expectations for the future s5l20

“I don't think cell phones will disappear. I just think the next generation of Spectacles can help open up new ways to use AR [augmented reality] hands-free, and the ability to actually be able to walk around with your eyes looking at the horizon, really looking at the world. .”

Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO of Snap, in an interview with the The Verge

Ao The Verge, the CEO of Snap, Evan Spiegel, comments on the future of augmented reality and how it will change our interaction with computers. Technology has slowly advanced in this direction – the devices are still big, or they don't work for a long time, and in both cases, they are not very commercially viable – see the fact that the new Shows not being sold to the general public at the moment.

The race, however, is there, and the Snap seems to be taking the lead. Other large companies are also developing technologies involving augmented reality lenses, such as Apple a Samsung and Facebook, but nothing like the new ones Shows emerged yet. O Facebook plans to launch, later this year, eyewear smart in a partnership with the RayBan – but it won't have an augmented reality display, for example.

In practice, there's a lot you can do with augmented reality, in case you're wondering - programs that developers plan, according to Snap, involve showing information about maps and terrain while you drive your car, or gamifying tasks (showing visual incentives while you exercise), for example; other creators demonstrate how they can show translations of the name of objects you are seeing on the table to help you learn a foreign language. Not to mention the effects used only for entertainment.

Showing historical information and curiosities in the places you are visiting is one of the interesting features that augmented reality provides.

“You have to invent a whole new way of interacting with computing when things are volumetric and integrated with the space around you. So I don't see Snapchat transitioning to wearables that directly, but one of the really fun things is thinking about what the new paradigms of interaction might look like.”

The future of augmented reality really looks exciting, and the new Shows they are certainly the next step towards that future. So, did you feel like using the new glasses? Tell us in the comments!
