Nintendo Direct: What happened at the February presentation 5rw2v

Nintendo's first presentation of 2019 brought a lot of news to the gaming world!

The first Nintendo Direct of the year – a live video presentation in which the company reveals its main news – arrived with the announcement of several new titles for the Nintendo Switch and with a special focus on the new franchise game Fire Emblem. Time to check out everything that happened at the presentation! x9w

A new Fire Emblem 2h6j6v

With launch postponed to July this year, in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, players will take on the role of a customizable mercenary that they can name and customize. The trailer introduced both this character and several others who contribute to the plot.

The game takes place on the continent called Fodlan, with regions ruled by three separate kingdoms (hence three houses). These competing homes lived harmoniously after years of war. But now, in Three Houses, that's no longer the case.

As shown in the long trailer for E3 2018, Three Houses deviates from the recent Fire Emblem games not only in this school-based story, but also allowing for 3D exploration of the areas.

However, the gameplay will remain grid-based and the iconic weapon triangle remains as well. The Switch game marks the return of the strategy RPG series from Intelligent Systems to Nintendo consoles.

Today's presentation revealed that Nintendo's new favorite dinosaur game, Yoshi's Crafted World will have a demo version of the first levels available starting today on the Nintendo eShop, ahead of the game's launch in March.

This weird and cunning game follows in the footsteps of Yoshi's Woolly World, which enlisted the help of Mario's dinosaur friend in a soft plush world. Yoshi's Crafted World is another side-scrolling platformer, trading the wooly world for one made of cardboard and other crafting materials.

Unique to the game is the co-op mode and players will also be able to view the game from opposing points of view as they navigate 3D characters in a 2.5D environment. The basic mechanics will be similar to other Yoshi games: Yoshi eats enemies and objects to turn them into eggs, then launches them.

Originally slated for 2018, Nintendo moved the Spring 2019 release to last summer. In January, the company confirmed that the game would be released in March 29.

More creativity in Super Mario Maker 2 5ke34

Nintendo revealed that the Super Mario Maker 2 is in development for the Nintendo Switch during today's presentation. It will be released in June this year.

The reveal came alongside a lovely trailer showcasing the new tools for Mario's game making game. Not only do we see Mario adventure through various eras of the Mushroom Kingdom, but we also get a quick glimpse of Luigi in a builder costume.

Now we look forward to seeing more of Super Mario Maker 2 in the coming months, and probably the E3 2019, which also takes place in June.

Adventures in Oninaki 272x5o

The Nintendo Direct also revealed a new RPG for the Nintendo Switch: Oninaki. In it, the protagonist travels between the realms of life and death to save lost souls from turning into monsters.

As the hero progresses, the souls he saves will help him, and they each have their own special powers. Equipping certain souls will be better in specific areas.

Combat appears to be real-time in the trailer, with the protagonist able to equip many different types of weapons and use different attacks at once.

Weapons seem to match the souls you've equipped, so you'll definitely want to save as much as you can, so you have a full arsenal.

The bow weapon shows the hero dealing damage to many enemies at once, each with their own small health bar above their heads.

The exact release date for Oninaki has yet to be announced, but it will release in the summer.

Futuristic action in Astral Chain q5g1o

Nintendo also announced a new game from Platinum Games and from director Hideki Kamiya, which will be released for Nintendo Switch later this summer: Astral Chain, an action game starring two characters in a futuristic world.

The two characters are dressed in police uniforms and appear to fight together as they traverse the “futuristic multicultural city” in which they patrol.

The pair of cops aren't really keeping the peace of petty criminals; they are fighting giant monsters with their huge swords and transforming a super weapon into human form.

Nintendo is keeping quiet on the full gameplay details for now, but expect some high-intensity, fast-paced action in the style of Platinum Games.

Astral Chain will be released on August 30th for the Nintendo Switch as an exclusive game, expanding the partnership that Platinum Games and Nintendo have developed in recent years.

More news in Nintendo Direct y2qm

Among the numerous titles announced for Nintendo Switch during the presentation, Nintendo is bringing the first chapter of Deltarune de Toby Fox, the successor to the ultra-popular hit Undertale, for the Switch eShop on February 28, 2019.

The “spoiler-free” trailer features a variety of game scenes covered by smiling dogs in order to protect the actual game content. "Actually, there aren't many dogs in the game," the trailer assures players.

More chapters that will be released at an unknown price are currently in development. Although it's clear that the game's creator is trying to make everything about the experience a surprise.

Furthermore, the acclaimed Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice will be released on Nintendo Switch. The game, developed and published by Ninja Theory, tells the story of a Celtic warrior with a serious mental illness who returns to her village after a Viking attack only to find her lover sacrificed to the Norse gods.

The game was originally released for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC in 2017. It was later released for Xbox One in April 2018. It was also adapted for VR this past summer. The version on display for the Nintendo Switch appears to be a full version of the game.

Nintendo also revealed a free update for Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Nintendo Switch will add co-op multiplayer to all existing levels. The free update will be available later today.

Nintendo will also release 18 new challenges across five new courses as part of a paid update to the game. You will be able to explore sunken ships and a candy kingdom in the new content.

Existing courses in the game will also get a new objective: finding a golden crown, giving you an excuse to go back and replay the original levels.

The special episode will also be available for purchase on the eShop later today, along with a new bundle that comes with the original game and new content for players who haven't tried Captain Toad yet.

But purchasing the special episode today will only give you access to one of the courses, with the rest of the content coming in March 14.

Another successful game that will return to the spotlight is simmatic boxboy, which is coming to Nintendo Switch for the first time. The critically acclaimed puzzle-platformer originally debuted on Nintendo 3DS.

Starring a box-shaped hero, the game focuses on unloading boxes to complete various puzzles. The Nintendo Switch title introduces a second character – BoxGirl! Two players can complete the puzzles and take on the stages to restore peace to the planet.

With the debut of BoxGirl, the new title needs a revamp: BoxBoy and BoxGirl After completing all the puzzles, players will be able to play as a tall box named Qudy, a name players may recognize from the first BoxBoy title.

Boxboy and Boxgirl will have 270 stages with all-new puzzles, most stages in a BoxBoy title. It will be the fourth entry in the BoxBoy series. Past titles include BoxBoxBoy and Bye-Bye BoxBoy, both for Nintendo 3DS. The game debuts in April 26.

And to close the presentation with a “golden key”, Nintendo is bringing the classic Game Boy adventure from 1993 The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch later this year.

The re-release is more than just a Virtual Console-style release, it's a full 3D "re-imagining" of the classic Zelda adventure.

As Link, players will once again return to the island of Koholint for new adventures. While the new Link's Awakening retains the top-down — and occasionally sideways — view of the original Game Boy, the Switch remake uses 3D models and employs a sleek, toy-like aesthetic.

The original Link's Awakening was Nintendo's first Zelda game for a handheld device and the fourth in the franchise. First released in 1993, the game was later updated for the Game Boy Color in 1998.

The game was one of the few Legend of Zelda games to be released outside the land of Hyrule. Link's Awakening also has ties to the Mario universe, thanks to the inclusion of enemies like Chain Chomp and Goombas.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is coming to Nintendo Switch sometime in 2019.
