During the company's financial results release, Nintendo confirmed the release date of its new console, known as NX and also to March 2017.
The Japanese company, which lately has ventured into the smartphone games, also reported that it had a profit of US$295 million in the last year (March/2015 – March/2016), below the company's own forecast.
The NX will succeed the Wii U (12,8 million units sold), which has lost badly in of installed base against the PlayStation 4 Sony (36 million units) and the Xbox One from Microsoft (approximately 19 million).
Nintendo did not reveal any additional details about what the new console will look like, except that it is "a new concept", but there are several rumors about the NX circulating in the gaming press, some of them already publicly rejected by the Japanese manufacturer, such as the which indicated that the console would have a modified version of the Android installed.
Among the rumors still in the air are that the AMD would be the supplier of the U and GPU (which is very likely), that the joystick will have an “unprecedented” and peculiar design and that the NX will be a platform hybrid, that is, it will have a portable mode, in addition to the traditional console.
The official confirmation (or rejection) of these rumors can occur in the E3, which starts in June. Nintendo says it will focus the presentation of the event on the new “Legend of Zelda“, but that doesn't mean the company won't show news about the new console as well.
With the arrival of an updated version of the PlayStation 4 (and a possible update of hardware for Xbox One), a little rush wouldn't hurt Nintendo.
