Oscar 2020 coverage continues here at Showmetech! After the short films, the sound categories and the technical categories, we will delve into the artistic categories

In fact, all the professionals nominated in the 24 categories are, in some way or another, creative. However, the categories ofBest Production Design","Best Costume Design"and "best makeup” require a very particular skill set. Shall we understand a little more? 2x5s5f

BEST PRODUCTION DESIGN 3k2e6k

Inside the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (which is the name of the association that awards the Oscar) there are several departments. Each department is responsible for nominating the best professionals of the year in their category. The department of "Design” was until 2012 called “Art direction“, so there is still some confusion regarding the name of this category.

The category has existed since 1929, and until 1947 it awarded only the production designer(s), but since then the award has been divided between two professionals: the production designer and the film set decorator.

when talking about production design, specifically about the scenarios from a movie. That is, each scene of a film is an ultra-detailed work, which begins with an intense search for references and, depending on the time or universe in which the film takes place, it is up to professionals to create everything from scratch.

Below you can see an outline of the film "Black Panther” (which came out victorious in this category at the 2019 Oscars), and the final set, set for the recording.

Final version of the “Black Panther” scenario.

As you can see in the sketch above, there is a search for materials, colors and possible objects. Seeing the finished scenario then shows how interesting this translation is. The victory ofBlack Panther” marked the victory of Hannah Beachler, the first African-American designer to be nominated, and to win in the category. She shared the award with the movie set decorator jay hart.

Curiosity of the nominees: Do you recognize the house and floor plan below?

These images are therenders” and concepts of the main house where the film takes place “Parasite“, one of the nominees for the Best Production Design. According to the director Bong Joon Ho, the challenge he gave the production designer was not just to create a visually beautiful set, but one that met the precise needs of the camera, compositions, and characters, while still incorporating the film's themes.

WHO DESERVES TO WIN?
"Parasite"
Production designer Lee Ha Jun managed to turn the sets into characters. Both the rich family's house and the poor family's hut have so much personality and manage to be a reflection of the personality of the of each family.

WHO WILL WIN?
“Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood”
The work of the production design team on this film is irable. 70's Los Angeles is recreated in an absolutely incredible way, just like Charles Mason's ranch is creepy. A gigantic job. The film has little chance in other categories, so I believe it will emerge victorious in this category.

“BEST COSTUME” 4e2a1b

The category of Best Costume Design it has existed since 1948. Until 1967, the category awarded separately films shot in black & white and shot in color. Since then, with the decline in black and white productions, the category has been combined into one.

The costume creation process is a conversation between the film's director, who then must inform the costume designer exactly what he wants and what he wants to convey through his characters' costumes.

A very fruitful collaboration is between the director Tim Burton and the costume designer Colleen atwood. One of his partnerships was for the film “Alice in Wonderland” from 2010, where Atwood emerged victorious, then receiving her 3rd Oscar (she won again in 2016 for “Animais Fantásticos e Onde Habitam").

See below a little of the process in the creation of the costumes of two main characters of "Alice in Wonderland". The first image on the left is Buton's original sketch, the middle image is Atwood's sketch, and the last image is the final result.

Also check out the video below (with the titles of the films in English) where you can check all winners in the category until 2017.

And a curiosity for fans of "Incredible"and "Incredibles 2” by Pixar: It was never really confirmed by the director Brad Bird, but it is speculated that the character Edna Fashion it's a tribute to Edith Head, the most awarded costume designer in history, with 8 statuettes.

The 2020 Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design are:

WHO DESERVES TO WIN?
"Jojo Rabbit"
This film is irresistible in many ways, and one of them is certainly the costume work. In fact, a particular piece of clothing has a lot of focus on the plot and creates tense scenes.

WHO WILL WIN?
“Lovely Women"
Costume designer Jacqueline Durran did an impeccable job for the film, making an irable collection of dresses for the main cast. A very elaborate work that will probably be awarded.

BEST MAKEUP 161l1u

The category of best makeup appeared in 1981 and its creation was boosted after the movie “the elephant man” by David Lynch, received 8 nominations, but there was no category to honor the fantastic work of Christopher Tucker, who was responsible for the film's makeup.

Since then, films like "The ghosts have fun"(1988),"Men in Black"(1997) and"Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) emerged victorious.

It's a very complex job, which requires hours, patience and a lot of skill from the makeup team, and a lot of waiting time from the actors who will be transformed into historical creatures or characters. See in the video below how one of the characters from the movie “Pan’s Labyrinth” was made, which won in the category in 2006.

The record holder in the category is makeup artist Rick Baker, who won in 1981 for “An American Werewolf in London“, when the category was incorporated into the ceremony. He won 7 times, the last time being in 2010 for “The werewolf“. See below Baker on set in 1981 and an image of his 2010 work.

The 2020 Oscar nominees for Best Makeup are:

WHO DESERVES TO WIN?
“The Scandal”
The work of the makeup and hair team is phenomenal. They managed to change the features of actresses Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman, who really look like other women. In addition, the work on actor John Lithgow, turning him into Fox News executive Roger Ailes.

WHO WILL WIN?
“The Scandal"
I can't see another movie winning the award.
