In this post from our 2020 Oscar Coverage you will find out about the Best Animated and Best International Film categories.

We're halfway through our Coverage Oscar 2020 and, without further ado, let's introduce the categories of "Best Long Animation and "Best International Film". 5b216h

BEST LONG ANIMATION 8583l

First of all, what are the parameters for a film to compete in this category?

  1. The film must have more than 40 minutes;
  2. A significant number of characters must be animated;
  3. A minimum of 75% of the film must be animated.

The category has existed since 2002, that is, it is the most recent in the history of the Oscars. A long animation can also be nominated in any other categories, including best picture.

The first film to achieve this feat was “Beauty and the Beast” (1991) and at that time there was not even a category dedicated to animated films. "Up – High Adventures"(2009) and"Toy Story 3” (2010) achieved much more, being nominated for five categories each, including Best Picture and Best Animated Film. Both won as animation.

The winning studio is the Pixar, who won the award 9 times, winning the last time by “Coco” (2018). THE Disney comes in sequence with 3 wins.

The 2020 Oscar nominees for Best Animation are:

“How to Train Your Dragon 3" 6l5d45

When Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only "Night Fury," he must seek out a secret dragon haven before a tyrant named Grimmel finds him first.

The animation in this movie is absolutely incredible, and some of the scenes are among the best in the franchise.”How to Train Your Dragon“. In one scene in particular, Toothless tries to do a “mating dance” to win over his partner and it's a genius scene. See below for the incredible level of detail, especially the animation of the grains of sand.

Dragons love it too.

"Klaus" 2o4o61

A selfish mailman and a reclusive toymaker form an unlikely friendship, bringing joy to a cold, dark town in desperate need of hope.

Netflix's debut with animated features is a pleasant surprise.

The animation is absolutely sublime: traditional 2D animation was used, combined with a composition and lighting technique that allows for depth never seen before in this type of animation. The character and setting design is fantastic and the voice cast is on point.

The plot is simple but allows for small lessons to be learned, for both children and adults alike, and this movie deserves to be among the classic Christmas movies.

Klaus
From sketch to final result, the work on “Klaus” is irable

A sasquatch recruits explorer Sir Lionel Frost to help find his long-lost relatives in the fabled valley of Shangri-La.

I'm a big fan of the animation studio Time. They made hits like "Coraline” and, my favorite, “Kubo and the Magic Strings“. The animation in stop motion of the studio is the best in the industry.

However, this is not his best film, as in of plot, it leaves a little to be desired. However, they continue to impress with their mix of animation. stop motion and visual effects. It's such an arduous and complex job and they do it in an exceptional way.

Definitely worth it for animation fans and its 2020 Oscar nomination is well deserved for the absurd work of “stop motion".

“Lost My Body” 1x3c5g

A severed hand escapes a lab, determined to find its body.

This unexpected French animation is based on a novel by the writer of “Amelie Poulain”, and, contains the same elements of fantasy and magical realism as that movie.

The plot is divided between the perilous journey of the severed hand and the tragic story of its owner as he searches for his place in the world.

Even with that wacky premise, the movie has a pretty deep message and definitely provided some good thinking and discussion. And, of course, this storyline would only be possible using animation. The movie is available on Netflix, be sure to check it out.

"Toy Story 4" 1h4223

When a new toy called "Fork" s Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside friends old and new reveals just how big the world can be for a toy.

After "Toy Story 3” set an all-time record for the franchise in 2010 – nominated for five and winning two Oscars (best animated film and best music), Pixar couldn’t let go of the franchise.

This new sequel has breathtaking animation and a good dose of comedy. The new toys make for great new moments for the franchise (duckling and bunny are ridiculously funny).

It's definitely a fun movie and should probably conclude the franchise - or not.
No Oscar 2020, in addition to indicating the Best Animation, the film is also nominated for best song (you can check out more about the best song category here).

WHO DESERVES TO WIN:
"Klaus"
For the unexpected use of traditional animation and becoming an instant Christmas classic.

WHO WILL WIN:
"Toy Story 4"
As much as I don't think it's the best chapter of the Toy Story saga, Pixar did another exquisite job and will probably take the statuette.

BEST INTERNATIONAL FILM 3y5w2u

The category of International Film (until last year called Foreign Film) awards films that are not spoken in English (after all, the Oscar is given by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences).

Between 1947 and 1955, only one film was honored, decided by an internal committee. Only from 1956 onwards that 5 films compete for the statuette. In this category, the award goes to the country, but who usually takes the stage is the director of the film.

The country with the most victories is Italy, who has won the award 14 times, 4 of which for films directed by the master of Italian cinema Federico Fellini"On the Road of Life"(1957),"nights of cabiria"(1958),"8''"(1964) and"Amarcord"(1976).

Second comes the , with 12 wins and in 3rd place Spain e Japan tied with 4 wins each.

O Brazil has already been nominated 4 times for the award: “The Promise Payer"(1963),"The Quadrillo"(1996),"What is this fellow?"(1998)"Central do Brasil” (1999), but unfortunately we never emerged victorious.

The 2020 Oscar nominees for Best International Film are:

"Corpus Christi" – Poland 162g5r

Daniel experiences a spiritual transformation in a detention center. Although his criminal record prevents him from enrolling in the seminary, he has no intention of giving up on his dream and decides to minister a parish in a small town.

“Pain and Glory” - Spain 3c6p4y

A film director reflects on the choices he has made in life and soon the past and the present blend into a collection of memories.

What a personal and poetic film.

the last movie of Almodóvar that I liked was "The skin I live” from 2011. I was skeptical about this new release, but by the end of the movie, I was extremely satisfied. I was enveloped by a very moving story, and, with equally touching performances – Antonio Banderas, in one of his best performances, also honored with a nomination for best actor.

Almodóvar makes the interactions between the characters so real and raw, that I felt every emotion throughout the movie. He doesn't exaggerate his own style (a common mistake in auteur cinema) and collaboration with his usual composer, Alberto Iglesias, is once again on point.

There are some moments of real brilliance, like a monologue from Asier Etxeandia (who plays a decadent actor), framed in a typical Almodóvar bright red. Another beautiful moment is a beautiful dialogue between Salvador (Banderas) and his mother.

A mature and very coherent film for Almodóvar's filmography.

“Honeyland” – Republic of Macedonia o6n5y

hatizde muratova
Hatidze Muratova, the “star” of Honeyland.

A bee farmer must save them and restore the natural balance to her small, remote village, while a family disrupts and threatens what she has built.

The film has just made history being nominated for both Best Documentary, how much Best International Film.

It is an intimate and profound documentary. Even if the characters are in a remote village in Macedonia, there are many relatable elements: man's relationship with nature, loneliness, the relationship between parents and children, family ties, greed and karma. It's truly an achievement what the filmmakers were able to portray in these microcosms.

Just wonderful.

"The miserable" - 4x5n4y

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FN2heULHsnY

A provincial police officer moves to Paris to the Montfermeil Anti-Crime Brigade, discovering tensions between groups in a dangerous underworld.

Unfortunately I couldn't watch this film by Malinense director Ladj Ly. I was on a very limited circuit and with difficult sessions. Leave it in the comments if you managed to watch it?

"Parasite" - South Korea 426q5b

An unemployed family takes an interest in a wealthy and glamorous family, the Parks. They slowly become involved in the Park house, taking on small jobs inside the house, which culminates in an unexpected incident.

This is by far the most original and intriguing film of the year.

Directed by Bong Joon-Ho, who has directed films such as “Okja","Express of Tomorrow" it's the "Host” – all with a touch of magical realism – this is their first without the fantasy element and, in my opinion, their best work.

The movie starts slowly, but then events begin to unfold in bizarre and unbelievable ways. The topics covered are super relevant, a social commentary difficult to ignore.

The film is nominated for 6 Oscars: Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Production Design and of course, Best International Film.

WHO DESERVES TO WIN:
"Parasite"
One of the best movies I've seen in recent years. And as much as we have other equally deserving films, this masterpiece of Korean cinema deserves to be awarded.

WHO WILL WIN:
"Parasite"
For the same reasons as above.
