São Paulo, 05/02/2018 – The union of two computer giants promises to place Brazil in the very select group of countries producing high-performance semiconductors – and in a new market that could move up to US $ 250 billion to 2025.
A Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., together with Universal Scientific Industrial (DOORS), a manufacturer linked to Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), signed an agreement to form a t-venture that promises to install a factory of semiconductor modules for smartphones and IoT (Internet of Things or Internet of Things, in translation) with technology SIP (System in Package) in the region of Campinas, in the interior of the state of São Paulo.
According to a Rafael Steinha, senior vice president and president for the Qualcomm in Latin America, your company will be responsible for the design of the semiconductor modules, while USI will be responsible for transferring technology for the implementation of the production line.

The executive also stated that as technology SIP is not yet commercially available, Brazil could become one of the first to enter the value chain for this type of component worldwide.
Roughly speaking, this type of module manages to gather in a single package all the internal components of a smartphone, such as central and video processors, plus the radio-frequency circuits that connect to cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC, for example.
In this way, manufacturers of these devices and IoT devices would depend less on imports, which today corresponds to approximately US$ 20 billion annually in Brazil.

“This project should help drive IoT adoption in Brazil, as some of the technology platforms ed by this t venture will be developed to help facilitate the development and manufacture of connected devices in addition to smartphones in the country”, completed Steinha.
“The collaboration between Qualcomm and USI aims to develop the best solutions for smartphones and platforms for IoT systems, providing the connectivity, security and accessibility their customers need to create innovative products and improve the experience”, Explain Christian Amon, world president of Qualcomm Incorporated.
For those who don't know, Amon is a Brazilian born in the city of Campinas.

To CY Wei, president of DOORS, “The Brazilian economy is the largest in Latin America and represents great growth potential for integrated modules. We are here to help build a semiconductor sector in Brazil and the region that can increase the number of local jobs in the next five years”.
During this period, the Taiwanese company intends to invest $200M monthly.
The t venture will likely be installed in the state of São Paulo as a result of collaboration between the state, the DOORS and Qualcomm. Also planned is the installation of a Reference Center for Smart Cities, technology transfer and qualification of specialized labor. The expectation is that the manufacturing plant will start operating around 2020.
