A Bright Cities is a virtual platform that evaluates cities and states and indicates the best solutions to improve them, making them more efficient and sustainable. In this edition, 25 cities across the country stood out in the ranking: in the region Southeast there were 5, all from the state of São Paulo, the second most sustainable state.

To elect the most developed cities in the country, the platform analyzed 326 cities of Brazil, which have more than 100 thousand inhabitants, using the global technical standard NBR ISO 37120 of 2021, created in January 2017 by Brazilian Technical Standards Association (ABNT), based on the goals of Sustainable Development (SDGs) and 2030 Agenda da United Nations (UN).

It is this norm that establishes the methodologies of the set of indicators used to analyze the sustainable development of municipalities, cities or governments. These indicators are related to sectors such as: economy, education, energy, environment, governance, finance, health, sports and leisure, transport, telecommunications and innovation and urban planning.

ABNT brought this standard to Brazil as NBR ISO 37120, and for the certification of cities, it brought a classification based on the number of essential and indicators completed. In this way, for the initial level, Bronze, it is necessary to fill in at least the 45 essential indicators and up to 14 indicators, with the level increase depending on the number of indicators completed, with the silver, gold and platinum.

Bright Cities Study.

In all, 40 indicators were chosen, divided into five thematic pillars:

  • Prosperity: economy, innovation, infrastructure and social conditions;
  • Management: evaluate factors that impact the quality of municipal management, public finances and gender in politics;
  • Well-being: education; sport and culture; health; local/urban agriculture and food security; environment and climate change;
  • Security: number of deaths related to fires, natural disasters, industrial accidents and traffic deaths;
  • Infrastructure and basic services: the number of people with access to garbage collection, basic sanitation and sewage was observed.
