Resident Evil 0 delivers an important plot to the franchise's universe, also bringing together most of the qualities of classic games

resident evil is, like (almost) every entertainment franchise, a set of ups and downs. Most fans take the classic trilogy as a reference for excellence — not to mention its importance in popularizing the genre. survival horror. What little is said, however, is how Resident Evil 0 also fits perfectly into this proposal. 6c2y1x

Resident Evil 0 (or, if you prefer, Resident evil zero) was originally intended as a prologue to the first game in the series, the influential classic resident evil — which is also coming to Nintendo Switch with its memorable remake. The journey to survival this time is told through the hands of Officer Rebecca Chambers and a somewhat unwanted companion: the dangerous outlaw Billy Coen.

A night we'd rather forget 3le1s

Despite the rain, everything seemed under control on the night of July 23, 1998. Inside the Ecliptic Express, a train that transported engers around the Arklay Mountains, only conversations and celebrations echoed through the cabins and corridors - until the unexpected happened: a swarm of mutated leeches preyed on the locomotive's windows and attacked the engers.

Not far away, a cautious prison transport operation was also interrupted by the strange creatures, causing the death of virtually everyone involved. Under the rubble, however, the well done team identified one of the survivors: Billy Coen. According to the head of the team, the former military man convicted of murdering innocent civilians in the past planned and executed his own escape, becoming a public threat again.

Motivated by the tragic simultaneous events, team doctor Rebecca Chambers ventures towards the mysterious train. She already knew she was in danger, even more so in her first investigation as an officer, but she also felt confident in her abilities. What she didn't know was that the case would go far beyond her control.

even though Resident Evil 0 having originally been released in 2002 — during the GameCube generation — it's the classic PlayStation trilogy that he draws the most inspiration from. This is, at the same time, its greatest quality and its greatest flaw as a game.

The fixed camera perspective, proposed in the classic trilogy of the series due to the limitations in the hardware of the time, guarantees a certain degree of unpredictability and surprise as we explore rooms for the first time. One of the advantages of the 2015 relaunch for consoles of this generation it is in the slight angle of the camera performed as we move through environments of greater depth, giving the sensation of someone watching us through the lens.

As did their numbered series predecessors, RE0 brought a more truncated movement in its first version thanks to the tank controls (relating to the character's position rather than the camera's perspective). The alternate controls option has been implemented in Resident Evil Archives, “double” of terror containing resident evil e Resident Evil 0 released for the Wii in 2009.

Speaking of gameplay Resident Evil 0, we must keep in mind that it is, in its essence, a game single player, but that doesn't stop it from functioning as an interesting local co-op experience. This is an exercise that requires a bit of abstraction on the part of the player, but I personally believe it works very well.

The tense atmosphere proves that billy and rebecca don't seem to get along very well in the first moments of resident evil 0.
The atmosphere of tension proves that Billy and Rebecca don't seem to get along very well in the first moments of Resident Evil 0.

In the first few minutes of the game, Rebecca realizes that fighting the hostile creatures alone is too risky, deciding to team up (even against her own will) with the outlaw Billy. For much of history, we have the freedom to control whomever we want—whether through individual abilities or through status of each. At certain points in the narrative, however, the game deliberately fixes the control on just one character.

It is through the dynamics of exchange between characters, even if with just one control on this side of the screen, that the possibility of sharing your time with someone who is also interested in the title emerges. I highly value this type of experience precisely because I have a younger brother who has always accompanied me in the scary nights packed by the series.

As video games are both a creative expression and a product of technology, it is often common to encounter obstacles in bringing a game two “generations” older into the current era. The environments in Resident Evil 0, however, were created with an impressive level of detail for the GameCube era, making the work of those responsible for the remaster a little less challenging.

The creative part of the game, however, has its positive and negative sides. While many environments are authentic and distinct enough to give us an impression of vastness, many thematic ideas, natural enemies and puzzle ideas are heavily influenced by the classic trilogy.

I miss there being something really memorable about the experience I had with Resident Evil 0 when I first played it in 2015, but I also don't think every Resident Evil title needs to be revolutionary. It was just with Resident Evil 4 that the horror franchise has finally ushered in a revolution within the industry — even if it took a step away from classic survival horror guidelines and conventions.

Definitive version? 2t3625

The unquestionable success of Resident Evil 2 and satisfying sales of the Revelations collection on Switch have opened eyes to three new opportunities: releasing the latest versions of Resident Evil, Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil 4 on Nintendo's console. In fact, this is the first time that RE0 arrives on a portable console.

The gamecube's most beloved trilogy has arrived in full swing on the switch.

Content-wise, nothing has changed since the 2015 remaster. Unfortunately, some game modes in the Wii version — which provided motion control options — weren't included at the time. The performance, however, is what bothers the most: framerate drops are not so common, but the load time between screens is impractical in almost every transition between rooms, making a more continuous and immersive experience impossible.

If you are a fan of the series and already have Resident Evil 0 on another platform, I think there is no need to relive the experience just for the portability factor — even more so for the price of 30 US dollars. In case you still don't know the mysteries of this classic survival horror, this seems like a competent enough version to be enjoyed in small doses.
