Enhanced version of the console uses Artificial Intelligence to improve graphics upscaling and enhance the experience. Find out if it's worth investing in it

At the end of 2024, the Sony launched the PlayStation 5 Pro as an option for those who want to get the most out of the games on their platform. Its biggest highlight is offering the PSSR, technology similar to the DLSS da NVIDIA, finally managing to bring games with resolution 4K and com 60 FPS. But does this really happen? Is the investment worth it? Find out everything in our full review! nr5l

Review of the PlayStation 5 Pro (Image: Tiago Rodrigues/ Showmetech)

The first thing that stands out in the For PS5 is its design. Standing between the PS5 Slim and PS5 Fat In of size, it maintains the design of the most recent model, but with one difference: it now has three black stripes in the middle of the body, instead of just one. There is no logical explanation for this design, except the intention to differentiate it from the other models.

Another important point in its design is the absence of a disc drive. The PS5 Pro is sold exclusively in the digital model, which means that if you want to use physical media, you will need to purchase the drive separately. In addition, following the change introduced in the Slim model, the base to keep it in a vertical position has also been removed and is now sold as a separate accessory.

In the model we received for testing, Sony included a stand, which is a positive point. Although it is possible to keep the console standing up without it, this configuration may not be the most stable. However, when positioned lying down, the design may not be to everyone's taste. For this option, the console comes with two acrylic feet in the box. Although they convey a sense of simplicity that clashes with the product's high price, they fulfill their function well and ensure the necessary stability.

Review: Is the PlayStation 5 Pro worth the upgrade or is it just a luxury?

At the front, the body has a “V” shape until it reaches the two USB-C ports and the power button. This change had already been made in the slim model and continues here. The USB-A ports were moved to the back of the console, there are two of them. There is also an output on the back HDMI 2.1, a door LAN and the port to connect the power cable.

Finally, it brings some details such as the symbol of PlayStation on the top and a groove with the brand's icons on the bottom. Is it the most beautiful and interesting console ever released? Definitely not. However, when viewed up close and handled, it gains a certain charm — but this only occurs when held vertically.

Review: Is the PlayStation 5 Pro worth the upgrade or is it just a luxury?

The first big news is the 2 TB SSD, replacing the 1TB of storage found in previous models. This is certainly a significant differentiator, even though other consoles allow for upgrades. While 1TB is functional, the growing size of games — many exceeding 90 or even 100GB — makes 2TB a big differentiator.

Still, if we consider the values, one PS5 Slim With a 1TB SSD — and at half the price of the PS5 Pro — it offers a much more attractive value for money. Even with the additional 2TB SSD, the PS5 Pro doesn't justify its higher price tag when compared to the Slim. While the larger storage is an advantage, it's not enough to make it a good value for money.

In memory RAM, he keeps the 16GB conventional consoles, but it brings an extra 2GB just for the system, making it more fluid and without overloading the rest of the memory when running games. The standard memory for games is GDDR6 and the OS, DDR5.

About the processor, it is the same AMD Zen2 of the other models, with a slight upgrade in the maximum clock. In PlayStation 5 e PlayStation 5 Slim, there are 8 cores at 3,5 Ghz. In PlayStation 5 Pro, are 8 nuclei, but 3,85 Ghz. The difference is minimal, and we can say that in games that require more processor power, it will not be possible to see a big jump in performance in this version. This type of improvement will probably be reserved for the PlayStation 6.

Now when we talk about the GPU, yes, we found an interesting leap. At the time of the PS5 launch in 2021, technologies such as DLSS da NVIDIA were not yet a consolidated standard and were starting to show themselves to be a good business. With this in mind, the new PS5 Pro improves the architecture AMD RDNA 2, which had 36 CUs and 10,28 TFLOPS in the original model, to deliver us a new GPU based on the AMD RDNA 3 and 4, with 60 CUs and 16 TFLOPS.

If you didn't understand any of these numbers, don't worry. Sony bring the For PS5 with three highlights: 67% more powerful GPU than the previous one with a 28% faster memory. Improved Ray Tracing ensuring more beautiful lighting and reflections. Finally, the use of PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, something like Playstation Spectral Super Resolution in free translation), the version of the DLSS from Sony. You can check out the details at our matter.

These changes allow the console to effectively run games in 4K to 60FPS, even if by means of upscaling. Additionally, games that previously did not Ray Tracing now feature this technology. Titles that used it may or may not receive an improvement, depending on the developers' efforts to optimize the games for the new console.

These changes aim to bring the most stable experience possible to games, fitting a high image quality, with high performance in frame rates as well.

List of games compatible with PlayStation 5 Pro improvements (Image: Tiago Rodrigues/ Showmetech)

The current list of games compatible with the improvements PlayStation 5 Pro comes close to 100. However, if we consider the size of the console's library, this is a very small number. You can check the full list at official website of Sony, but for this review, we have separated a shorter selection with some successful games that deserve to be highlighted:

  • EA SPORT FC 25
  • Fortnite
  • Call of Duty (Black Ops 6 and Warzone)
  • Marvel Rivals
  • Hogwarts legacy
  • Gran Turismo 7
  • The Last of Us Part II
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Black Myth Wukong
  • Marvel's Spider-Man 2
  • Baldur's Gate 3
  • Stellar Blade
  • SILENT HILL 2
  • God of war ragnarok
  • Horizon forbidden west
  • Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered
  • Lies of P
  • Assassin's Creed Mirage
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
  • The Last of Us Part II
  • Alan wake 2
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Demon's Souls
  • My First Gran Turismo

Optimization for the PlayStation 5 Pro It works like this in most games: instead of a mode Performance, focused on frame rates, or a mode Fidelity, focused on resolution, we now have the option PS5 Pro Enhanced. In this option, the console will activate the PSSR to bring a higher resolution while still keeping frame rates stable at 60. Additionally, it brings a ray tracing more robust and improved.

Games like Alan wake 2, for example, now have the option of Ray Tracing on the PS5 Pro, something that was non-existent on the conventional model. The point is that these cases where there was a change from water to wine were few and we will talk about that next.

Tests and comparisons 3u461y

Spider-Man 2 16644p

Spider-Man 2 is a very interesting game to compare. It is perhaps the one that brought the most possibilities to the player with its update for the new console, as it is now possible to define between the options Fidelity Pro ou Pro Performance. In Loyalty mode, the focus is to bring a Ray Tracing more advanced, in addition to increasing pedestrian density and traffic in some places on the map. Automatically, details such as characters' hair become more polished.

In this mode, the focus remains on the 30 FPS, but that's where the game's difference lies. Putting it in this mode, with a TV or monitor compatible with VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), the game manages to release more FPS even in fidelity mode with all Ray Tracing features activated. It is not as stable as in Performance mode, but it is still interesting.

Now at Pro Performance, is where new technologies For PS5 are in fact applied. Here the PSSR is activated to reach 60 FPS, but with the graphic part of the game's fidelity mode in the standard version. In this mode, all the features of Ray Tracing are activated and according to the game, it is the most recommended mode for most players.

For comparison purposes, I used mode Performance of both consoles. Below are some pictures of both versions. The pictures with Peter are from For PS5 and those of Miles, PS base.

God of War Ragnarök 4m544h

God of War Ragnarok is another exclusive title from the brand that has received improvements for the new console. However, I didn't notice any major differences here. In the options, we now have a mode Enhanced for PS5 Pro, besides being able to choose the PSSR as a rendering mode. The point is that in practice, apart from one or two improvements in textures, I didn't feel a big impact that would justify changing from one console to the other.

Is it better? Yes, especially in the foliage, but only if you stop and look closely and hunt for these details. When playing, these are things that will be seen in the same way on both the conventional console and here. For comparison purposes, here are some photos of each console:

Resident Evil 4 2o5f4j

Resident Evil 4 is one of the titles that, although it has been improved for the For PS5, does not present any notable visual differences compared to the base console. Both can run the game efficiently, whether in performance mode or with a focus on graphics, including with Ray tracing activated in both options.

The novelty in For PS5 remains for the option to play the game in 120Hz on the most powerful console. It's an interesting difference and doesn't prevent you from activating the other graphical features. It's just important to that to use this feature, your TV or monitor needs to be compatible with this type of refresh rate. Check out the images of both versions:

Horizon forbidden west 655w20

Until now, Horizon forbidden west proved to be the most beautiful game of the generation. The variation of scenarios and details is quite impressive and it's really cool to notice the behavior of the girl's face. Aloy, for example, with real-time sweat. In PlayStation 5 Pro, we'll have to be fair here and say that it's the game that takes the most advantage of new technologies — at least among the titles we've had the opportunity to test.

The way Pro Performance focuses on bringing the 60 FPS pro game and still maintains the graphics with a very interesting resolution. The base console runs at about 1800p in performance mode, but with dynamic resolution. On PS5 Pro, the resolution is the 1440p native, but with much more detail in textures and anti-aliasing, delivering a very impressive end result.

More resolution, more detail, and still a frame rate locked at 60 FPS. That's the promise of the PS5 Pro, and it's delivered here, but in practice, how much does this impact the game? Even though it made very good use of the new technologies, when comparing one to the other, it's not that impressive. It's great for taking some photos, but during gameplay, which is the target here, playing in the base console's performance mode will be just as satisfying.

Marvel Rivals 1a1q

Lastly, we have Marvel Rivals, a multiplayer game. The latest shooter heroes on the market uses Unreal Engine 5 to bring very impressive graphics combined with a very beautiful art direction reminiscent of comics. That said, the game has some improvements in For PS5, such as higher resolution and lighting Lumen Global, making everything more visually interesting. It's an interesting leap for those with a more trained eye for detail, but it falls back into what we mentioned: when it comes to actually playing, these are changes that don't justify the extra price charged.

REVIEW: PLAYSATION 5 PRO (Image: Tiago Rodrigues/ Sony)

It is undeniable that the PlayStation 5 Pro is superior to the original console. Advances such as 2TB SSD storage, More powerful GPU, to Ray Tracing and, mainly, for the use of technology PSSR, have the potential to deliver an even more experience for the player. But what can really hinder the purchase decision is the high cost of the new console.

Are R $ 6.230,07 by the For PS5, compared to R$4.499,90 charged by the console with traditional physical media (PS5), or R$3.440,07, if you compare it with the PS5 Slim.

In this sense, it is important to note that although the total internal storage has increased to 2TB, which is quite a lot of space, it doesn't have a disc drive, so you'll need to buy one separately if you need it. And considering the price, it would be nice if Sony included the remote control Dual Sense Edge in the package, instead of the Dualense conventional.

And bet on For PS5 now maybe it's a “investment for the future”, as there are no games specifically designed to take advantage of it yet. But soon we will have great titles like Death Stranding 2, GTA 6 and many more coming.

In short, the The experience offered by the PS5 Pro is very positive, but the purchase will only be worth it for those who don't mind paying the extra price or want to prepare for future games. For more economical players, we recommend evaluating the prices of Original PS5 e PS5 Slim, mentioned above, which already deliver excellent performance.

The enhanced version of the PS5 brings interesting technological improvements, but they clearly serve as a bonus only and not as something mandatory. This wouldn't be a problem if the amount paid for these improvements wasn't so high, making it a somewhat controversial product.
