REVIEW: Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, more than pretty faces 5s1a32

Avatar of Fernando Telles

Just like in the good times, the new top of the line from Sony arrived in Brazil in double dose. Launched here in June, by the trifle of R$3.799 e R$3.299, respectively, the models Xperia XZ2 e XZ2 Compact are the Japanese manufacturer's redemption, bringing a new processor, new screens and, finally, a completely renewed design. 2w4b4m

And to find out if they're really worth it, the showmetech took charge of a noble mission: during the last 30 days, we were with both models, gathering as many impressions as possible about the devices to clear all your doubts. In the analysis you can see now, find out what our verdict was:

Xperia XZ2 at a glance: 1v6x5f

Pros 6x1j2g

  • Photos and videos with the best of current technology;
  • Clean, light and updated system;
  • New design with smaller edges

Cons 7147r

Xperia xz2 - design
Even with the new design, Sony decided to keep the discreet appearance of its smartphones

For those who keep up with smartphones from Sony for some time, the look is certainly the main novelty of Xperia XZ2 e XZ2 Compact. The new philosophy of natural, call "Ambient Flow“, proposes a more modern and smooth appearance for cell phones – without neglecting, of course, the typical build quality of the brand's models.

That said, it is possible to say that both the “common” XZ2 and its smaller brother are better looking than their predecessors, as well as more comfortable to hold in hand. Although these points depend on the taste of each , it is undeniable that the smaller bezels translate into more display on the front of the models – which is a hit with the general public.

Despite the change, Sony has remained conservative about the edges, as they are still larger than those of the Galaxy S9, iPhone X and LG G7.

Faced with the 198 grams and 7,2 centimeters wide of the “normal” XZ2, the Compact edition is even more ergonomic, with just 6,5 cm wide and weighing less than 170 grams. As far as design is concerned, the smaller model also brings some subtle differences: such as its plastic back and a different positioning of the photographic and NFC sensors.

Despite the back cover not being made of glass, the plastic used in the XZ2 Compact is of very high quality and resembles a rubberized finish. Due to the matte texture, the material also does not accumulate as many fingerprints and should be more difficult to scratch than other types of plastic, such as black piano, for example.

On the traditional Xperia XZ2, Sony chose to use glass on the back as well, and both surfaces are protected against impacts and scratches (Gorilla Glass 5), in addition to oleophobic coating. The side frames on both the XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact are made of aluminum.

And to take advantage of the fact that we are talking about the sides, it is worth mentioning that, in the smaller model, in particular, the frame has the same texture as the back cover, being matte and more adherent than that of the standard XZ2.

Xperia xz2 compact - rear
Both the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are water and dust resistant (IP68 certified)

Going back to the back, the only point that really catches the eye is the fingerprint reader, which is no longer on the side in this new line of smartphones from Sony. Although it was highly praised, the former location united the button and the one-component fingerprint reader – something that, for reasons of patents, prevented Sony from enabling the feature in the US.

To get around this problem and not have to pay royalties to HP, which owns the patent in question, Sony was forced to change the location of the sensor, something that didn't please the brand's fans.

Discreet and positioned just below the rear camera, the new fingerprint reader is accurate – and since it no longer needs to be pressed to work, it can be even faster than the previous one. While the rear location isn't as practical as the side one, I doubt this, in and of itself, will stop anyone taking the XZ2 home.

Xperia xz2 - screen
The screen of the Sony device is also capable of converting the contents to HDR automatically.

dominating 76% from the front of the Xperia XZ2, the larger model's screen has 5,7 inches and aspect 18:9, in addition to Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2160 pixels). already the that equips the Compact version, in turn, is smaller (5") and lower frontal utilization (73,5%), however, brings the same resolution and the same screen aspect.

Although the specs aren't terribly surprising, these are by far the best screens I've ever seen on a Sony device, both in of brightness and contrast and colors. The resolution, although not quad hd as in competitors (Galaxy S9), makes the pixels virtually invisible to the naked eye and consumes less battery.

The lower resolution also allows the screens of the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact to be brighter and more colorful – making them, in these two respects, sur even the 4K of the Xperia XZ .

When watching videos on YouTube or series in HDR can display content more accurately.

Review: sony xperia xz2 and xz2 compact, more than pretty faces. Just like in the good times, the new top of the line from sony arrived in Brazil in a double dose. Launched here in June, for R$3 and R$799, respectively, the xperia xz3 and xz299 compact models are the Japanese manufacturer's redemption, bringing a new processor, new screens and, finally, a completely renewed.

In use under the sun, on the other hand, the screens of the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact also don't look bad, being perfectly readable. Beyond the 618 nits maximum brightness, the s bring an exclusive technology from Qualcomm, which brightens the screen's colors whenever it's in bright light. This way, the interface elements are also easier to see.

Audio 3n1j5g

Xperia xz2 - audio
The sound from the front speakers is one of the best on the market, as well as being the loudest in the entire Xperia range.

According to Sony, the Xperia XZ2 was specially created to maximize the experience in consuming media such as movies, games and music. Because of this, in addition to having the most powerful audio among all Xperias ever released, the device also has two front speakers, which have stereo audio and deep bass.

To control the speakers, Sony also took great care in with , including an equalizer, a system surround 3D, audio enrichment features and the best – yes, the best – Bluetooth audio streaming on the market.

We'd be happy to say that the model's audio is just as good through the headphones as it is through the speakers. However, Sony does not include this accessory in the test devices.

In addition to the powerful, clear sound and with many adjustment options, another novelty that was highlighted at the launch of the Xperia XZ2 is the Dynamic Vibration. As the name implies, the idea behind the feature is to vibrate the smartphone at the same intensity as the sounds of the music or video being played at the moment.

To make dynamic vibration possible, Sony has also reworked the vibration actuator, making it very similar to Apple's Taptic Engine.

In practice, the result is quite questionable. This is because, in addition to consuming considerably more battery, the vibration is not smooth enough to blend in with the audio. Personally, I think the feature works best with games, as video game controllers also have this function.

Still, for some reason, dynamic vibration doesn't work with all games.

Cameras 353z5z

Sony xperia xz2 and xz2 compact - cameras
Cameras stand out for their great HDR in good light conditions

On both the Xperia XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact, the rear cameras have 19 megapixels, aperture f/2.0, a large sensor 1 / 2.3 ", pixels de 1.22 nanometers and a pair of sensors that help capture.

Although the aperture is much smaller than the f/1.5 of the Galaxy S9, restricting much more light entering the XZ2's camera, the sensor and pixel size compensate, making the Sony model perform great in most scenarios. In daytime photos, even, HDR has always been very accurate, balancing the colors and brightness of the image so that nothing is distorted.

Regarding the cameras of the XZ and the XZ1, the only advantage of the Xperia XZ2 is in the image processor, which comes from the Snapdragon 845 and is faster than the previous generation.

In the photos I took at night, the HDR also did a good job, however, the lack that a optical stabilization (ISO) is gigantic. If the function existed, the sensor it wouldn't depend so much on the ISO and it would make night shots less grainy. All in all, while the night shots are satisfying, they're certainly behind what OIS cameras can produce.

As far as video recording is concerned, the HDR is also a protagonist in the XZ2 line. This is because Sony's releases are the first, and until then the only ones, which can record HDR videos in 4K resolution. With these two settings activated, the result in the footage is impressive. The color, brightness and contrast of the video, in particular, are much more faithful to reality.

Below, check out one of the official videos recorded with the feature:

Another unique video feature of the Xperia XZ2 is super slow-motion recording in Full HD resolution. Although the photographic sensor is the same as the previous models (XZ and XZ1), the launch is the only one that records videos at 960 frames per second in this definition.

The part that Sony doesn't mention in the commercials, however, is that by increasing the resolution of 720 to 1080 pixels, the recording time of the excerpts in slow-motion falls from 0.2 second to 0.1 second.

Still about the cameras, but about the fronts this time, I have to say that I don't understand the choice made by Sony. In 2017, both the Xperia XZ they had cameras 13 megapixels. Although the sensor wasn't the best at night, the level of detail in daytime shots was good.

With 5 megapixels, f/2.2 aperture and a 1/5″ sensor, the front cameras of the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact disappoint in photos and specifications. They just don't match the price range of the models

In the Xperia XZ2, Sony has reduced the amount of megapixels, adopted a smaller aperture and reduced the size of the sensor. Although the device takes good selfies, especially during the day, as you can see below, the lack of detail in the images is notorious, being below even devices that cost much less, such as the Xperia XA2.

Hardware and Performance 5n491a

The "Compact" versions of Sony's tops have always been known for bringing the same hardware as the traditional device, always being a great option for those looking for high firepower and a more comfortable size for smaller hands.

Well, this recipe for success was repeated in the XZ2 line. The smaller model, like the traditional XZ2, brings 4GB of RAM, 64GB internal storage, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi (a/b/g/n/ac), LTE Cat18 for s, micro SD card , USB 3.1 type-C and the mighty Snapdragon 845, Qualcomm's newest high-performance processor.

With the new XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, Sony has repeated the same magic it did on the XZ , presenting devices that are noticeably more agile than competitors from Samsung, Motorola and LG.

Regarding the (now old) 835, the chip maker promises improvements mainly in graphics processing, energy efficiency and image capture. It was the new chip that made it possible, for example, for the XZ2 line to record videos also in HDR.

Qualcomm's new mobile platform brings benefits in energy savings and graphics processing

In everyday use, you are unlikely to notice such a performance gain. both the XZ2 as much as XZ2 Compact they are extremely fast and run any applications with their feet on their backs, but their superiority over older models such as the XZ and XZ1 will only become evident in a few years – when these devices suffer the action of time.

When it comes to two tops of the line, it is clear that the execution of games is also impeccable. On both the XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact, I was able to install the most popular games of the moment and play them without a problem, even while listening to music on Spotify.

Xperia xz2 - system and features
Sony's interface stands out for having little modification to Android and its fast animations, but it also takes time to offer new features

mounted on the Android 8.0 Oreo, Sony's interface has many positive points, but it also lacks strategic points, starting with the look, which has not been updated with the trends of the time. Despite delivering a system notably more agile than the competitors, with short animations and good memory management, the company's interface does not bring any revolution - only evolutions.

Of course, none of this makes the interface bad, less practical or fast. Just use the Xperia XZ2 next to a Galaxy S9 and then you can see what I'm talking about: the Sony device responds faster to the touch and has more fluid animations. Still, it's annoying to see Sony remain averse to change, especially as the competition rolls out new features. every year.

In the specific case of the XZ2, the main novelties of the interface are the new themes and wallpapers, in addition to a new lock screen. Other than that, everything stayed pretty much the same as what we saw on the XZ1 and other Xperias from last year.

If you like a purer experience, on the other hand, this absence of new functions every year can be positive, since this is precisely what allows Sony to update its smartphones faster and for longer than other manufacturers. In 2017, for example, the Xperia XZ took just two months to receive the Android Oreo – what must be repeated with the Xperia XZ2 and the future Android P.

Another advantage of Sony's little modified system is its visual consistency. As the manufacturer follows almost all the standards of natural do Google – adopting the same status bar, the same menus and the same animations as “pure” Android, the interface and applications that adopt the material design have a homogeneous appearance; in other words, “speak the same language”.

Battery 554u5p

With 3180mAh in the normal model and 2870mAh in the Compact model, energy capacity is not one of the Xperia XZ2's greatest strengths. Despite this, it is possible to say that both models have satisfactory autonomy, always enduring a whole day of social networks, lots of music and constant internet connection – usually via Wi-Fi.

In more intense uses, however, it is possible that the milliamperes less in the Compact model will be lacking - since, even with a smaller screen, the little one is as powerful as the standard XZ2 and the Snapdragon 845 does not work miracles, despite being up until 30% more efficient than its predecessor.

Price and final considerations 6u3310

sony xperia xz2 - final
The new Xperias XZ2 and XZ2 Compact bring a lot of evolution to Sony's line, however, they charge dearly for it

Unlike other 2018 models, even a month after they were launched, Sony's new smartphone duo did not have their costs reduced in the Brazilian market. As a result, the suggested value for both continues to be R$3.799 protocols for Xperia XZ2 e R$3.299 protocols for XZ2 Compact.

Although it is possible and likely that values will fall in the coming months, this is a point that puts the devices at a disadvantage, since two strong competitors (Galaxy S9 e iPhone 8), can be found for prices below that.

Still, it is possible to consider the new devices as good purchase options, since they are the only ones to offer certain features. At least in Brazil, there is, for example, no other smartphone of 5 inches with the same firepower as the XZ2 Compact.

Xperia xz2 and xz2 compact
Models are by far the best that Sony has ever offered in Brazil

With regard to the Xperia XZ2, things get more complicated for the Japanese, because its top of the line is not cheap for those who want to try the line and, among those who are already fans of the brand, it was not so successful - many criticized the removal of the side biometric sensor, the curved back and the inexplicable lack of the headphone jack.

Sony's new smartphone duo has a great package to face the competition. However, the new devices are also more expensive than most competitors, which can make the Galaxy S9, for example, more cost-effective.

However, if you like Sony smartphones and approved the new design – as is my case – it can be said that these are the best devices that the brand has ever offered in Brazil, and that even for those who acquired the XZ or the XZ1 last year, the switch to the XZ2 may be worth it, as long as the new screen and new processor make up for the amount to be disbursed.
