Debuting in December 2021, the series …And Just Like That — whose full name is “...And Just Like That… A New Chapter in Sex and the City"- it's a reboot of Sex and The City which brings, to the most nostalgic and fans of the famous series from the late 90's and early 2000's, a joy in enjoying the life of the four friends in the greater New York.
However, the new series brings back only three of the four characters, as Samantha — played by the actress Kim Cattrall — does not appear in the new version of Sex and the City. Understand what happened.
Sex and the City, the origin
Anyone who lived through the 90s, as well as the beginning of the 2000s, has certainly heard of Sex and the City. The series originated from the homonymous book published in 1997 and written by Candace Bushnell, and ran for six seasons that aired from 1998 to 2004. In both works, we see a group of friends who are between 30 and 40 years old: the protagonist Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) with her friends Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall), Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin davis).

The series tells the lives of these women who live in the big city of New York and have an active sex life, showing their flirtations, dating and how they deal with these issues as mature, professional women in a city so full of surprises. The series has won four awards. Emmy — including best comedy series in 2001 — and even yielded two films, Sex and the City: The Movie, in 2008, and Sex and the City 2In 2010.
In January 2021, HBO announced the reboot of Sex and the City, entitled …And Just Like That, which is currently shown on the streaming service HBO Max. O reboot features several characters from the original plot — except for Samantha jones. There were several reasons why Kim Cattrall is not included in the new series, ranging from rivalry with Sarah Jessica Parker, to the fact that she disagreed with the salary she was receiving at the time the projects took place.
reasons for absence
There were several reasons that led to the refusal to Kim Cattrall to participate in the new series that continues the events of Sex and the City. In 2017, the Daily Mail published an article raising possible reasons why the actress would have refused to make a third Sex and the City film. Amongst them:
- “The only reason this movie is not being made is because of Kim Cattrall. Everyone was eager to make this movie, but Kim did everything on her, always playing the victim”;
- “Kim had the audacity to tell Warner Bros. that she would only do this if they made other movies that she had in development. Ridiculous. Who does she think she is – George Clooney?”;
- “This franchise made her and let's face it, that's all she's really known for. Cast and crew don't just show up to make a movie, they need to reorganize their lives. People were turning down other jobs, they were in the process of moving to New York, but she kept stalling and was always unavailable when answers were needed from her.”
After the publication, the interpreter of Samantha publishes a tweet in which she talks about not wanting to be part of a possible third sequel to the films. She says:

The only 'REQUEST' I made was that I didn't want to make a third movie... and that was in 2016.

Still in 2017, in an interview, actress Kim Cattrall stated that never would play Samantha again. She explained that the refusal for a third film was because she would like to step into a new chapter in her life.
Not for me. That was part of turning 60. It was a very clear moment of how many years do I have left and what do I want to do with it? What didn't I do? I feel like the show was the best when it was the series and the bonus was the two movies.

In our same interview, Cattrall also talked about his relationship with the franchise's protagonist, Sarah Jessica Parker, reaffirming the rifts that exist between them and showing the influence of this friction at work.
We've been co-workers and in some ways it's a very healthy place to be […] This is really the way I look at the people of Sex and the City, and specifically Sarah Jessica Parker. I think she could have been nicer. I really think she could have been nicer. I don't know what her problem is.
Kim Cattrall on her relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker
There is still information that during the fifth season of Sex and the City, there was a meeting or some kind of party held by Sarah Jessica Parker, attended by many of the cast of the series, including Kim Cattrall. The actress learned that her husband was on his way and left, but towards the end of the series, Kim Cattrall was no longer in with anyone in the cast.

The intrigues and disagreements between Sarah Jessica Parker e Kim Cattrall They seem to go further than we imagined. Moving to February 2018, Sarah Jessica Parker commented on the death of Kim Cattrall's brother, on Instagram, which retorted the lack of discernment of the colleague by profession, who did not need to comment on anything about her life, especially the loss of a brother.
My mom asked me today 'when is that @sarahjessicaparker, that hypocrite, going to leave you alone? Let me make this VERY clear. (If I haven't already) You're not my family. You are not my friend. So I'm writing to tell you one last time to stop exploiting our tragedy to restore your 'nice girl' persona.

And not just personal issues, but the PROFESSIONALS were also reasons that led Kim to move away from Sarah Jessica Parker. When being interviewed by Jonathan ross, in 2004, the actress confirmed that one of the reasons for wanting to move on with her life without participating in possible new projects involving the series or film, were for her dissatisfaction salary — when compared to the protagonist, Sarah Jessica Parker.
And that doesn't come exclusively from Kim Cattrall. Some people from the Sex and the City stated that they did not think it was fair for Sarah Jessica Parker to earn more than Kim Cattrall, since Samantha was the character dearest of the public. According to other sources, Kim Cattrall had requested a payment of $ 1 million per episode in a possible seventh season of the series, which was rejected, a reason that may indicate the end of the sixth season.
And so it was for the movies: Kim Cattral was also paid less than Sarah Jessica Parker. according to Celebrity Net Worth, Kim Cattral received $7M monthly for the first movie and $10M monthly for the second, half of what Sarah Jessica Parker was paid — however, Kim Cattrall still received more than the other two colleagues who make up the iconic group, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis. And according to Variety, Kim Cattrall had not accepted to be part of the first film, however, he ended up accepting after having accepted his request for a raise.
…And It Was Just Like That
There's not much of a secret about Kim Cattrall's absence from …And Just Like That. Right in the pilot of the series, we already see how the Samatha case was portrayed. One of the characters, Bitsy Von Muffling, arrives at the — now — trio of friends, at a restaurant, asking about Samantha and why she isn't with the group. Carrie and Miranda soon respond that Samantha has moved to London at work.

The next paragraph contains spoilers.
Carrie hires Samantha as a publicist to work on promoting her books, but with the industry going from bad to worse, she dumped her friend who then (in Carrie’s words) “fired her as a friend” — consequently moving away from Miranda and Charlotte. Carrie and Miranda try to get in touch with their friend, but their calls and messages have not been answered. When Carrie's husband dies, Samantha s Carrie by text and sends the girl flowers in honor of the deceased.
Just before the series launch in November 2021, the The Daily Mail confirmed that despite everything the press and fans already knew about Cattrall's position, Samantha would not be completely dropped from the series — and in fact, the character was ed throughout every episode. Samantha was present in the last scene of the last episode of the series – which aired last week –, in which Carrie is at the Pont des Arts in Paris, responding to an invitation to meet the protagonist.
We entered your absence very quickly. Viewers will discover that Samantha and Carrie had a falling out because Carrie fired Samantha as her publicist and that they no longer speak. This effectively ends your personal relationship. You'll see as the series progresses over the 10 episodes that Carrie misses her friend and wants to mend their relationship. In the words of Oscar Wilde, 'life imitates art'.
The Daily Mail on the non-perpetual deletion of the character despite the absence of Kim Cattrall

And of course this all happens for a reason that may be very obvious, but that not everyone expected. Another informant stated that the decision not to remove Samantha from the series is precisely because of the opportunity for a possible return of Cattrall playing the character, in the case of a second season.
We will eventually announce that the series will have a second season. It's not a one-season affair, it's going to be a series. It will be a while between seasons one and two as Sarah Jessica Parker has a busy schedule and we have a lot of work to do to bring Kim Cattrall back. We all miss Kim and hope she returns for season two – the door will never close on her, she's an important part of the franchise… On set, Kim was missed by everyone. The cast and crew love her and hope she returns.
Insider about the new series' second season and Kim Cattrall's possible return to the franchise
And despite the information coming internally, the executive producer do reboot also stated, in the month of launch of the series, that there is a lot of interest in continuing a second season.
Everything I do, I always finish. I always leave something ready. I'm just telling a story to see what happens. But of course there is interest [in doing more]. Everyone loves everything, in theory. While we were working, it always felt like the beginning. It didn't feel like a beginning, middle and end. So I think it's possible to continue – if we have enough good stories.
Michael Patrick King, executive producer of …And Just Like That on a possible second season of the reboot
Spin-off

A possible reason that better displays this whole situation may be the realization of the series The Carrie Diaries. Created in 2013 and yielding two seasons, in this series we see the life of the protagonist Carrie Bradshaw (this time played by AnnaSophia Robb) in her adolescence, how she met her friends, romances and a little about the beginning of her professional life. As one of the arguments Kim Cattrall referred to how Sarah Jessica Parker was more noticed, possibly the creation of a spin-off based on the protagonist may have been another trigger for the actress.
