The new ShowmeCAST episode starts with an interesting line that ends up permeating the entire show. The late sociologist Zygmunt Bauman coined the term liquid modernity to refer to a new stage of social relations in a world where relating is synonymous with something fragile, “simple” and consequently less stable and distant.
From this perspective, we begin our debate by commenting on the superficiality of human relationships in modern times. Will the gradual evolution of mass media and transportation change the way we see each other, and if so, does this impact on how our affective relationship will or will not continue?
In fact, when we talk about superficiality, we are usually being superficial when dealing with a more complex issue than it seems, as Livia pointed out. To say that technology is ruining the personal interactions it is somewhat mistaken, because this same technology that separates is the same that is uniting people who will read this text at some point while the internet still exists.
However, in this world of liquid, for being so fragile and malleable, I adopt the posture, as well as Bauman, that absolutely nothing is made to last, and our relationships are sometimes so simple that they end up reflecting in sadness in the end. Because everything we start must have an end.
