Review: Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra, the mid-range player without basic functions

O Xperia XA1 Ultra It is made of aluminum and metal. With one 6 inch Full HD screen and two edge fingers, the device is a single piece and conveys solidity. While the XZ is made of metal and glass, the XA1 ends up with fewer fingerprints.

Although similar, the big difference is in the back, as it is not mirrored. With a main camera 23 SM, rear flash and an “XPERIA” engraved in the middle of the device, that's what you find in the more than 6 inches it has.

in front, the 16 MP camera stands out for the silver sensor that clashes with the black version of the cell phone. In a practical way, the only intervention on the device is on the upper front, which leaves it like this: “SONY o” thanks to the sensors.

On the right side, there are the volume, power and camera buttons – something rare on smartphones. On the left side, there are only the input for chips and microSD.

The headphone jack goes on top of the Xperia and the USB-C port goes on the bottom, next to the speaker. Escaping the infinity edge pattern of some of the smartphones this year, Sony has a unique look for its devices.

Although the Xperia XA1 Ultra is huge, it's not too bad to hold with just one hand. The smartphone is not the thinnest or lightest on the market, but one of the most original.

O Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra It's a monster in specs. With a MediaTek Helio P64 20-bit octa-core processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, the device strictly complies with the “intermediate-” category.

During a month of use, it was very difficult to see the phone freezing or lag. Simpler games like Candy Crush or more demanding ones like Asphalt 8 run without a drop in frames, but you can feel it heat up after a few minutes of running.

For the end who wants to listen to music, browse social networks and occasionally play a more demanding game, the Xperia XA1 Ultra won't do ugly.

Os 4GB of RAM help to open apps faster and Sony's custom Android plays along with their power.

It is important to note, in the “Hardware” section, the lack of a fingerprint sensor. The Japanese company usually places the sensor on the power button of the devices, as is the case with its tops of the line, but forgetting this function in a '' intermediary, especially considering the cost of the XA1 Ultra, is practically unforgivable.

In addition to making the smartphone less secure, there is no other way to unlock the device more easily – after all, it goes without saying that here too We didn't find the iris scanner or facial recognition, these features being exclusive to Samsung's S and Note lines.

With 2.700 mAh battery, the MediaTek chip brings the magic of fast charging, but Sony preferred to charge consumers for an extra charger to have the fast charge.

It's not just powerful specs that make a smartphone (we're looking at you, iPhone 7 with 2GB of RAM). And for me, the biggest problem with smartphones is the Android devices. Don't get me wrong, already in version 7, the system is incredibly better than it was a few years ago, but it's amazing how the company developing its own software on its hardware is a different experience.

Microsoft, after a long time, realized this with their computers, but most smartphone manufacturers, in addition to using Google's system, still customize it.

I don't particularly like the touch 'Sony' not Xperia – and neither does the design of your apps. But what bothered me the most is the list of recommended apps from the What's New app, which in addition to having necessary programs like WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, has a space for “promoted” apps, because it's not enough to pay a fortune on a smartphone , it is important to receive ads on it. Er...

O Xperia XA1 Ultra runs Android Nougat and should receive Android Oreo at some point in the future.

It is important to note that despite the editor's preference, the Android is not a hindrance when using the functions of the Xperia XA1 Ultra; the fluidity of the system impressed me. Even with a 6-inch screen, apps are optimized and don't often crash in daily use. Congratulations, Sony.

A Sony still not in the dual camera market, at least not with the XA1 Ultra, but we cannot deny that this is where the company's smartphones stand out. With one 23 MP main camera, opening f/2.2, Exmor RS sensor, hybrid autofocus, fast startup and capture, in addition to ISO 6400, Sony wants to ensure a good photo with the device.

Megapixels aren't everything, but the company is careful to put good technologies on the device. During my tests, it was possible to take very nice pictures, being possible to notice the difference of similar colors and even the depth. For roots photographers, unlike this “Nutella photographer” that you are talking about, the Xperia line has a Manual mode that promises to take gorgeous photos – as long as you know how to adjust it, of course.

At night I realized more pixelated photos and not very good quality. It's not like other manufacturers have excellent solutions for the dark, but it's important to note that it won't be in a low-light environment that you're going to take that amazing photo.

Already frontal camera, although with “only”16 MP, it has an aperture f/2.6, an Exmor R sensor and ISO up to 6400, for low-light photos. The 23mm angle lens also has a flash for Selfie and, amazingly, an optical image stabilizer.

Translation: just like the main camera, the photos come out very interesting with good light, plus the wide-angle camera allows you to show more of the image. In the dark, the same thing: more pixelated photos that are not ok at all.

An interesting point to note is the Dedicated button for camera on device, which in addition to giving more firmness when taking a photo, it also helps you focus on the object before clicking.

Here, the Sony decided to be more modest: despite the 6 inch screen, Xperia XA1 Ultra has a 2.700 mAh battery. In practice, it is possible to at most 12 hours with your smartphone on, but it is very likely that you will need to carry the charger in your bag on a busier day.

And this is also where Sony makes the device lose points. THE Xperia XA1 Ultra works with the fast charging technology, however, the charger with fast charge is sold separately. That is, you have to pay a few more dollars to take advantage of a function that comes in the box of many other smartphones.

O Moto G5S, for example, much more modest than the XA1 Ultra, already has the charger fast charge in the box – as well as a fingerprint sensor.

Sony did a good job with updating the XA Ultra line. In fact, the company took the opportunity to improve what was already good, but without improving what needed to be improved.

Both in people's vocabulary and on their smartphones, fast loading e fingerprint sensors are so common, which even with more power and internal storage, would, in a way, be a downgrade choose the XA1 Ultra over another intermediary.

However, this smartphone is suitable for those looking for a good camera and would like better integration between Sony services: headphones, for example, and PlayStation services.

The device has a suggested forward price of R$2.299. on the Sony website, but it is possible to find it for just over R$1500 at Lojas Americanas, only in 5 inch version. Despite the price being almost 800 reais more attractive, it will depend on the to give up some technologies for others – which he should not necessarily have to choose.

It is worth noting that, in the white and gold colors, the front camera sensors are a little more apparent, which may annoy some people. In addition, the device is worth it for those who like the brand, seek a big screen and wants to have a quality camera (provided he knows or wanted to venture into manual mode).
