Understand what stop motion is and travel through this fascinating universe with the best films that have enchanted different generations over the years

O stop motion, “still motion” if literally translated into Portuguese, is a form of animation that has won over the public and inspired several filmmakers for many decades. This technique involves taking a series of photos, with small changes between each one, to create the feeling of movement when you watch them in sequence. While digital animation gains prominence, stop motion maintains its charm due to its artisanal touch and unique aesthetics. In this text, we will explore the world of stop motion and some of the biggest hits that have captivated several generations over the years. 6s6i12

Stop motion is an animation technique that triggers the illusion of movement through a series of still frames. In this animation method, each frame is actually a separate photograph that captures a specific scene. To create the sensation of movement, objects or characters are delicately moved or adjusted between each photograph. Basically, someone takes a photo of a scene, changes something a little bit, and takes another photo. This is repeated many times until we have enough photos to create a moving film.

The stop motion illusion happens thanks to a scientific principle called persistence of vision, or retinal persistence. Basically, when we look at something, the image remains on our retina for a short period after we stop looking. It's as if our eyes have a quick memory. So when we see a series of images ing quickly, especially at a rate greater than 16 frames per second, our brain stitches these images together into a continuous sequence that creates this illusion of movement.

The history of Stop Motion 1g3a6v

The origin of stop motion is still uncertain, but it is undeniable that, among the various animation techniques we have today, stop motion is one of the oldest. One of his first records was made around 1896, when the French illusionist and filmmaker Georges Mélies began applying stop motion to create special effects in his films, which represented a true artistic revolution at the time. In the short film Trip to the moon (1902), Méliès used the technique to portray man's arrival on the Moon aboard a manned rocket.

One of the first animations known to be made entirely in stop motion is The Automatic Moving Company (1910), directed by Emile cohl, one of the pioneers in the history of cinema and animation. This short film, although it doesn't actually tell a story, captures the imagination by portraying how fantastic it would be if furniture came straight from the moving truck to your home.

The second record of a stop motion production appeared in Russia in 1912, with the short The Cameraman's RevengeDirected by Ladislas Starevich. This film was the first stop motion animation to effectively tell a story. The plot narrates a beetle who cheats on his wife with a dragonfly, while a cunning cricket records the entire betrayal. What makes this film even more curious is that the characters used to create this work were not dolls, but real dead insects.

For a long time, stop motion also played a key role in creating special effects in films that featured robots, dinosaurs, monsters and other unrealistic creatures. A significant milestone in this approach was King Kong (1933), which became one of the first big hits to employ the technique for special effects. At that time, due to the absence of technology to convincingly depict creatures, filmmakers relied on frame-by-frame animation to bring these elements to life.

In 1963, driven by Ray Harryhausen, a visionary animator in the stop motion genre, the film industry has made a significant leap in the evolution of special effects. In Jason and the Argonauts (1963), the American animator played a crucial role in bringing the film's beasts and skeletons to life with the development of an innovative technique called dynamation. This technique involved the integration of stop motion in scenes that required interactions between real actors and animated fictional elements.

To perform the dynamation, Harryhausen and his team followed a process. First, they filmed a scene with the real actors in a real setting, thus creating the atmosphere and performances in the scene. Then they would do another separate shoot where they would create frame-by-frame animations of elements like monsters or creatures. During this stage, attention to detail was of utmost importance, including consideration of the way light fell on the animated objects and how they moved. Finally, they combined footage of the real actors with footage of stop motion animated elements, creating the illusion that the animated creatures or objects interacted naturally with the real world.

Over time, in addition to evolving, new techniques inspired by stop motion emerged, such as claymotion. One of the pioneers and great example of using this technique is the TV series Pingu (1986). What differentiates the claymotion of traditional stop motion is that, instead of using articulated dolls, it uses clay or play dough to create animated characters and scenes.

And don't think that stop motion was restricted to cinema only. Nowadays, he is present in a variety of productions, including short films, commercials, video clips e até TV programs. Its versatility makes it a valuable tool for telling stories in unique and engaging ways across multiple forms of media.
