Augmented Reality is the future of technology, but how close are we really to it?

well that the Google tried to lead us into a world of Augmented Reality to Google Glass, but the project did not advance, remaining only in expensive prototypes that did not please the market. However, many are still interested in this next technological leap. "We know what we really want: AR glasses", said the chief scientist of the Oculus, Michael Abrash, at the developer conference F8 do Facebook in early 2017. 38446f

He predicted that in the near future “instead of carrying stylish smartphones everywhere, we will be wearing stylish glasses”. And he added that “these glasses will offer AR, VR and everything else, and we will use them all day and in every aspect of our lives.”

This may seem overly optimistic to those who the humiliating stumble of the Google Glass. The epically late headphones of the Magic Leap and disappointing initial sales of the company's own virtual reality headsets. Oculus.

But we can imagine that all these were just baby steps, because all large companies are going through a process of adopting augmented reality. These are just the first attempts at a new technology platform that will eventually have its fixed spotlight very soon in our digital lives.

The digital “Fourth Platform” 67a1m

There has been a growing consensus that artificial reality – the technology that tricks the senses into seeing, hearing and interacting with digital objects and scenery as if they were as real as the furniture we sit on and the people in front of us – will become the “Fourth Platform” in computing.

Each of the previous three platforms – arriving approximately every 15 years – was a period event, providing an opportunity to reshuffle the power rankings of tech companies. And each threatened the existence of industry leaders who lived the “Innovator's Dilemma”, which claims that winners in a round of technological progress are too locked into their wins to bet on the next wave.

In the early 1980s, personal computing destroyed mini-computer companies and launched the Apple and Microsoft. The mid-1990s saw the explosion of the internet, creating endless, giant industries like Google e Amazon. Finally, the iPhone 2007 ushered in the mobile era. Augmented reality is this new platform.

Not all companies working with smart glasses share an identical vision; some have different opinions on how immersive this device should be. But all have quietly adopted the implicit assumption that a persistent, portable artificial reality is the next “big thing”. Unfortunately, competitive pressure has forced them to start launching intermediate products now.

When something doesn't work, companies can't afford to give up. Google is an example of this. One of the most humiliating mistakes in its history was the Google Glass , which started as a geek ion project and ended up as a ridiculous device. Instead of burying the incident, the company persisted.

Google Glass is currently being used in “serious games” by many companies such as manufacturing and healthcare, giving the A, an apparent advantage in testing the eyewear concept in the field.

A Microsoft also does not fall behind. The company has already launched its own smart glass, the HoloLens (albeit without much fanfare). And new companies dedicated to augmented reality, such as Magic Leap (fueled in part by an investment of $350M monthly), are pushing the limits of current augmented reality science.

Amazon e Apple are also in the “Fourth Platform” race. Just check out some of Apple's patents. And recently, the Amazon ed the fray, introducing a new service AWS to help developers build applications in augmented and virtual reality.

Available now in preview, it allows you to create VR “scenes” that work on a variety of devices, including Google's Oculus, Gear and Daydream. Called Amazon Sumerian, it signals Amazon's belief that its dominance in commerce will extend into an artificial world.

While we wait for augmented reality glasses, the 2018 version of augmented reality involves layering information onto live images provided by your cellphone camera. Apple, Microsoft, Google and Facebook are providing deep toolsets for developers to build apps for this approach.

All these efforts are just a test drive for the ultimate vision quest: a set of digital glasses that will be on the edge between real and virtual. The impact on society will be incomprehensible and, in some ways, worrying and even dangerous. But we may have between 5 and 15 years to start arguing about the consequences of these effects.

Meanwhile, in secret labs around the world, oligarchies and tech adepts are hard at work inventing a wave of computing that will literally be in your face. Like it or not, the next battleground in technology will be in your field of vision.
