We watched Invincible, the animated series of heroes from Amazon Prime Video 5w1z45

Surprisingly faithfully adapted from the comics of the same name, the series Invincible premiered last Friday (26) at Amazon Prime Video. The first three episodes aired, with a great cast and lots of surprises. Check out what we think of this series of heroes below, where violence is taken seriously. 3s6l1s

Invincible tells the story of the boy Mark Grayson, son of an important superhero, in a land where heroes are everywhere. He is on a quest for self-discovery while dealing with a “double life”: student during the day, learning to use his superpowers in his spare time (while maintaining a secret identity). For those who have watched the hilarious Sky High da Disney, the formula that may seem old-fashioned wouldn't have changed that much in 15 years, right? It turns out that Invincible manages to captivate (and shock) in the very first episode.

The easiest comparison to make, without giving away the plot itself, is with another Prime Video hit, The Boys. This time, however, we have a bloody animation that knows how to balance its development well, without weighing too much on the drama – which can please some and alienate others. Another differential is the approach to paternity, a theme that only came to be unraveled in the second season of The Boys and is not afraid to be one of the most important centers in Invincible.

The animated series is derived from the comics of the same name, made by R, renowned creator of HQ The undead (popular The Walking Dead). The editions were published in the US between 2003 and 2018, with limited circulation here in Brazil. Invincible of Prime Video is directed by Jeff Allen, whose credits most similar to this one are in the united avengers e Ultimate Spider-Man. In addition, the soundtrack is composed by John Paesano, the same person responsible for the memorable opening of demolisher da Netflix and by the game Spider-Man from the PlayStation 4.

Invincible also features a cast of renowned actors. The Invincible protagonist is Steven Yeun (Glen from The Walking Dead e Oscar nominee), Your father is JK Simmons (Spider-Man's boss in Sam Raimi's trilogy and also the disciplining teacher of Whiplash) and his mother is Sandra Oh (of Grey's Anatomy e Killing Eve). Among Mark's high school friends and superheroes he encounters in his endeavors, we have other familiar voices/names: Seth Rogen, Mark Hamill, Mahershala Ali, Ezra Miller, Jon Hamm, Walton Goggins, Zachary Quinto, Gillian Jacobs, Zazie Beetz e Justin Roiland.

Yes. Whether by cast, adapted story (for those who know), affinity with the genre or by the violent and colorful new approach that is rare to see today on TV / streaming. The animation is also reminiscent of the style of other hero series from the 2000s, which may appeal to the most “nostalgic”. At no point do you feel a decline in production quality, so hopefully the consistency between three episodes will carry over to the rest.

Humor is another inevitable point: there are parodies of current superheroes, ing Guardians of the Galaxy and Batman, for example. Invincible if you're mature enough to know that there's no reason to repurpose certain clichés from series/hero animations. What you already know is not exaggerated, so everything that it brings has, consequently, a unique “freshness”.

The only criticism I have is the fractional display itself. It's no secret that the weekly series model was successful in Disney Plus, leveraging the number of subscribers during Mandalorian, for example. Now, Prime Video has chosen to imitate with Invincible what was done in The Boys, releasing the top three at once on its opening Friday.

Both from Prime and both were adapted from the comics, but while The Boys is a much better constructed drama, there was the “suspense” justification for adopting the logic of weekly release as is done on TV. Invincible it fails to make creative hooks at the end of the episodes and, worse, it can take time to captivate or create empathy for the protagonists – which, personally, does not happen when the series is released all at once. Even so, watching the first three episodes is enough to understand if the series is your style.
