What to expect from Elden Ring, game from the creator of Game of Thrones 4c1y25

In an in-depth analysis of the launch trailer, we tell you what to expect from Elden Ring, From Software's new game with George Martin from Game of Thrones

After years of painful uncertainty — but even less bitter than the lack of information about the last two books in the franchise Game of Thrones — we can finally ask ourselves more properly: what to expect from Elden Ring? Not by chance, the trailer released in the last minutes of Game Summer Fest, last month, was a resounding success and attracted all game enthusiasts like bees in a garden in pollination season. n3k3i

Unlike our pollinator colleagues, however, it is necessary to assess what can really come with the next title of the From Software, responsible for giants like the series Souls and the acclaimed Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. That the company knows how to make great games is already common knowledge, but what happens when it decides to team up with a great medieval storyteller like George RR Martin — consider only the books in the series The Chronicles of ice and Fire for this nomenclature, preferably - and bet on a script apparently as dark as the series Souls?

Well, let's get to the point: a detailed analysis of the presentation trailer, which you can check out at the end of the post.

What to expect from Elden Ring according to the trailer? 6j6w4r

The first thing that catches the eye — and, let's face it, the first thing that appears in the video — is this friendly horse, which is sniffing the hand of someone down. Considering the games of From Software, it is quite plausible that this is our protagonist, who normally starts the game in precarious, almost hopeless situations, see Dark Souls, where you are stuck in the Undead Asylum, or Sekiro, in which the eponymous protagonist loses an arm early on.

Of course, the fallen creature could also be a dead NPC, or simply not be anything important, serving only to introduce the female character who appears next. The hooded girl, who looks more like a remastered version of Mãe Miranda from Resident evil village, as far as he is concerned, introduces an interesting thing into his opening dialogue, which allows for some initial guesses:

The tarnished will soon return. Guided by grace once lost.

In free translation: The stained will soon return. Guided by grace once lost.

A From Softwareand is a true master when it comes to trailer semiotics and the games themselves. The caption, which normally accompanies the intros of their titles, is usually not distinguished between uppercase and lowercase characters, which already indicates a certain obscurity in the trailer itself. In any case, due to other tips that appear throughout the two minutes of the video, it is possible to indicate that tarnished, or Manchado (coffee with a splash of milk), in free translation, is the protagonist, given that this type of epithet is granted to the characters of the series Soulsas the The Chosen Undead e The Ashen One, for example.

A counterpoint, however, is that the definite article the, in English, does not necessarily indicate inflection of number, at least not without context. This means to say that it can very well be “the stained” as well as “the stained”, implying a type of society, sect or even status. The issue of status, for example, is relevant when we that, in Dark Souls, there are many Undead and even several chosen undead, according to the dialogue with the Crestfallen Warrior that we found as soon as we arrived at Firelink Shrine.

In the trailer itself Elden Ring, there are some assumptions to be made according to the speech of a given character — a boss, apparently. Despite the very personalized style and conversation, it is possible that he will be the first or, at least, one of the first that the player will face. This considering, of course, that the “tree of life”, which I will talk about later, means the beginning of the journey, not the end. Now, it is necessary to look a little deeper into the actual history of the game.

Fragments of the official history 4196l

With these initial assumptions made, we can proceed to the official game website. In it, there are official descriptions and points of interest for those looking for more information about the title's history. Even with this data, the mythology of the game itself is still somewhat murky, as might be expected from the duo Miyazaki and George Martin. Anyway, the first thing we can take advantage of is the fact that there was a war in the world of Elden Ring, called The shattering, which, loosely translated, can mean The brake, The Fragmentation or something in the same style.

The golden order in elden ring
The Golden Order (golden order, in the original) appears to have been a group responsible for maintaining order in the Midlands. (Image: Bandai Namco)

This war was responsible for the “golden” abandonment of the Greater Will (Greater Will, in the original). Whether this will is something the fruit of the gods, who are present, as I will soon say, or a kind of individual faith, it is not possible to know. Now the world of Elden Ring, called the The Lands Between, or, in a very loose translation, The Middle Lands, is, as the name suggests, ruled by several demigods, sons of the Queen Marika the Everlasting (Marika the Eternal, in English) that carry fragments of the Elden Ring, a ring of unimaginable power.

The concept of splintering seems pretty strong in the game, given that there are multiple instances where it appears, whether in the divided land, the ring itself, or the Greater Will. The pieces of the ring are even called Great Runes, which points to some of the influence of Germanic mythology in the game, which will also appear in the form of the large golden tree that we will see later.

We have confirmation that the tarnished were a tribe or clan that belonged to these Intermediate Lands, but were purged from the world due to the war. Another interesting factor is that, according to Bandai Namco, the Spotted must fulfill the prophecy of rebuilding the lost ring and taking command of the kingdom. Did it remind you of something? If not, I help: this feels a lot like the journey of AragornOn Lord of the Rings. First seen as a Guardian of the North, or Cleaning, it becomes clear, throughout the narrative of the book, that Aragorn is indeed the promised king of gondor, descendant of shut up.

Considering that it was George Martin who wrote much of the game's mythology, it's quite likely that you'll die when you reach the end of the plot. Jokes aside, official information also confirms characters scattered around the world of Elden Ring, especially in the cities, which look more like ruins, of what was the great kingdom of yore. They give you quests and can help you or harm you (damn Patches). Another feature, already known to late fans of the series Souls, are the various weapons and special attacks, refined since Dark Souls 2. The positive aspect here is that the spells seem to be getting better, but only time will tell.

Facing random enemies in the elden ring trailer

An interesting point is that, according to the Bandai, the player can choose various paths of exploration in a semi-open world. It is difficult to define what, exactly, this means, but perhaps we have more freedom of choice than in other games in the world. From Software, which is a welcome innovation. As in the image above, it seems to be possible to find mercenaries and other types of soldiers scattered around the map and face them, either directly or in a more Stealth. And, as the narrator says, you will die a lot, because of some curse, as usual. But none of this is new, let's face it.

the golden tree 5r1l6s

The first most imposing scene, so to speak, presents the viewer with a gigantic golden tree. What does it mean? What is the purpose of placing it? Where is she? are just some of the questions that cross the minds of the most curious. Trees of the genus are not uncommon in human history, whether in art, religion or literature — the most basic example would be Yggdrasil, the fundamental tree of Norse/Germanic mythology, which represents, very briefly, what is called existence. For those who like manga, a similar one is also present in Berserk, by Kentaro Miura, constant inspiration from Hidetaka Miyazaki. See:

The official name of our dear ghost tree is erdtree. Forest, in German, gives the idea of land and soil, which, loosely translated, would mean Earth Tree, even if it seems like a pleonasm. The tree seems quite important given that it is mentioned as the creation of the Elden Ring. Were it not for the fact that we know that the main character arrives at Intermediate Lands crossing an ocean, we might suppose that the tree was some kind of Nexus. Maybe it still is, but one that needs to be discovered. Either way, she will play a key role, one way or another.

It is also interesting to note that when the first narrator talks about the return of the Spotted and states that they will be guided by the previously lost grace, the camera is turned to the tree. Maybe the erdtree be, in fact, a resting place and serve, literally, as this lost grace, or at least shelter whoever represents this entity. Something that was not very clear, including the rest system — bonfires? encounters with NPCs? lanterns in the middle of the street?

Gameplay 106d5e

elden ring gameplay
When I took the print, had not paid attention. But looking closely…is that a Lannisters pennant? (Image: Bandai Namco)

Although the dark stories have progressed through the games of From Software, a key aspect that developed over the years was the gameplay. From the locked mechanics of the first Demon souls, going through the heavy style of Dark Souls, facing a little more freedom in Dark Souls 2, experimenting with Bloodborne, refining the experiments in Dark Souls 3 and finally reaching perfection in Sekiro, From Software stood out when listening to fan criticism and got better and better. So here we go, in order of the trailer.

This mechanic was probably obvious for those who are used to playing other RPG's, but it didn't exist in the titles of the From Software. Yes, I'm talking about her: the change of hours of the day. Also popularly known as time. It is already confirmed that the player will be able to face some enemies at night, which would facilitate, for example, ambushes and move more cautiously. How much of this will be derived from skills or weapons, however, remains to be seen. It may be that, in order to rest, as in the second image, it is necessary to set up a camp, which implies several possible adversities.

Supposed protagonist of elden ring calling a horse
Summon mounts. SUMMON UP. MOUNTIES. YOU GUYS! (Image: Bandai Namco)

It sounds silly, but mounts would make life a lot easier in an open world of FromSoft as seems to be the case Elden Ring. Dark Souls 3, for example, was on the threshold of acceptable walking to one side or the other, and the world was already relatively large. Randomly wandering through what is the largest semi-open world in the company's history doesn't seem very tempting to me, and I have 600 hours of Fallout: New Vegas, hunting for empty houses, nonexistent treasures and banging your head on invisible walls. So this… buffalo? hybrid? I don't know for sure, but I know it's not a horse, it can be so good.

And it also means mounted combat! Finally, spear s will be even more unbearable than they already are in other titles with PvP (player vs. player, the famous x1). In a previous capture, about the appearance of random mercenaries during the journey, it is possible to see some of this fighting style mounted. In addition, there is yet another scene that shows the character jumping off the mount and already engaging a combo against a group of opponents. Maybe it's an indication that the single hits will also be transplanted to this set up system.

We have the return of torches to dark places and, of course, two-handed weapons. Interestingly, the character is right in the middle of the skeleton's attack — there's no way to tell if she took damage or not, but that felt weird, it did. Either way, this is probably an ordinary longsword, not much of a flourish, unlike the one that appears in the first capture of this section. That, my friends, is a magic sword. I wish there were more details, but nothing is perfect, unfortunately. I'm afraid it won't be until the game comes out that we'll know the quality of spells. An unexpected appearance was that of an arc, which, by all indications, seems much more dynamic than its predecessors.

Another brief surprise is located in these circular areas. We can assume that they are scattered around the map, although only one has been shown - these pads, so to speak, serve to boost the player when he is galloping. It is also not possible to know if they will only be used for mounts or if the protagonist will be able to use them, or even enemies. What you can expect, however, is a large map and full of gigantic buildings.

After the second Kentaro Miura moment of the post, another return, albeit somewhat unexplored, is that of co-op, or cooperative mode. He's never been exactly complex in the company's other games; you would find your friend's brilliant name, invoke it in an instant and that's it, you could face a boss, defend yourself from invading spirits or even attack other people. This time, however, there seems to be, in Elden Ring, a greater depth in the mode, being possible, who knows, even to take a journey with the friendly spirit. According to the official website of Bandai Namco:

Summon familiar spirits to even the odds against you or call on your Tarnished fellow to fight at your side and share the burden as you explore.

“Summon friendly spirits to even the odds, or call on other Spotted to fight by your side and share the burden of exploration.”

Bosses and enemies 6s6y4z

What was not missing from the gameplay trailer for Elden Ring were chiefs and enemies of the most varied. From classic knights to scorched giant hands, to ogres, flaming heads, verdant moose, skeletons and patterned monsters, I can tell anyone will encounter at least 10 worthy enemies. The order of appearance, however, remains a mystery; as I mentioned at the beginning of the text, the boss who despises you as a Manchado (coffee with a splash of milk) either may well appear at the beginning or at the end, depending on the relationship to the golden tree.

Judging by the attitude of forcing the character to kneel, we can imagine that he is one of the lords who has one of the fragments of the aforementioned ring. Or, who knows, a protector of one of them. What matters is that he doesn't seem very friendly, either because of the giant ax or due to the multiple protruding hands on his arms, which give him an appearance worthy of a final boss in a game. resident evil. It is better to watch the video, because there are so many that I would spend several minutes adding images in a row.

Well, the image above illustrates another mechanic much requested by fans and which is also very basic: the jump. More than once in the trailer, we see the character jumping, either from the mount to attack, or to dodge a blow using another maneuver, or to attack. Although the scene above shows what is certainly a cutscene, the mechanics really seem to be there, to the delight of all of us. I can't imagine what kinds of insane combos will be made and what weapons will be the best in this new combat dynamic.

elden ring deer
It reminded me of Moonlight Butterfly from the first game in the Souls series. (Image: Bandai Namco)

Well, that was the trailer analysis. Of course, there are still thousands of things to think about and theories to be developed, such as the presence of the queen Marika in one of frames from the trailer, guarded by an uninviting swordsman, or the various imposing and wonderful castles that appear along the journey, some in ruins, others in full swing. I can't wait to find the swampy area that will make the Playstation 5's frames per second embarrassing — and, in the case of gamers, rage.

And, of course, the giant red-haired woman who glues her arm back and runs through a knight with a sword worthy of the Sephiroth de Final Fantasy VII. Will she be the next Lady Dimitrescu? Well, we'll know more later on. Below you can check out the full trailer for Elden Ring.
