Director Zack Snyder Explains Why The DCEU Will Never Be The Same As The MCU r3m3k

Avatar of Luis Antonio Costa
According to Zack Snyder, the two comic book-based cinematic universes have differences in the way the films connect.

Zack Snyder is the director behind the main films of the DC Universe at the movies. However, even trying to disentangle his works from the productions of Marvel, many fans always want to compare and point out the differences between the Cinematic Universe Marvel (MCU, Marvel Cinematic Universe, in English), belonging to Disney, with that of the Extended Universe of DC (DCEU, dc extended universe, in English) from Warner Bros. After all, both are ambitious cinematic endeavors, adapting decades of classic comic book content. Marvel and DC have been battling over audiences since both brands were confined to comic books, so it seems only right that they will face off on the big screen as well. 2q4g3l

However, while these debates may be taking place all the time between fans of the two currents of hero comics, the truth is that an individual comparison between the MCU and DCEU may not be as appropriate — at least that's what the prominent director Zack Snyder think.

Snyder was one of the main creative influences on the Warner Bros. DC Universe. from the start. He lifted the curtain on the entire ambitious adaptation project, directing Steel man 2013, and followed with the first production of the DCEU, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Then, in 2017, Zack Snyder began work on what would have been his DCEU masterpiece, a grand five-act epic on a scale comparable to Avengers from Marvel, scheduled to begin with Justice League of 2017.

Away in the midst of production Justice League, Zack Snyder resumes his original idea for the film and intends to release it as a four-part miniseries

Unfortunately, Snyder suffered a personal tragedy and had to withdraw from the production of Justice League. The film was then taken over by Joss Whedon, and the results were so bad that Snyder is actually turning his movie around and producing a director's cut that will debut in HBO Max this year as a four-part miniseries. Even so, many experts and fans have doubts whether increasing the original film's runtime and adding more content will be enough to regain the director's prestige with the DC universe.

Regarding comparisons to the MCU, Snyder himself declares that the DCEU was not created to be a huge web of interconnected stories, but rather a constellation of related but independent projects. Next, we'll understand in more detail how this Snyder idea actually works.

Recently, Snyder weighed in on the issue of the Marvel-DC rivalry and whether or not fans should extend the comparison to the MCU and DCEU. According to the director:

“I think Marvel, they built [the MCU] over a long period of time, so when it came to their later films, everything was kind of stuck, and they were all kind of moving in the same direction. But that was never going to happen [with the DCEU] because DC's TV shows and their animated shows were so popular. I mean, it was a success that they had.”

As far as Snyder, DC and Warner Bros. have a long history of success with a more piecemeal approach to storytelling. Snyder comments on this:

“Even when I was doing Steel man, Batman vs Superman e Justice League, there were DC animated movies that had nothing to do with what we were doing […] and there were DC TV shows that had nothing to do with what we were doing, and there was no way to put them together without alienating a giant fandom saying 'Your Flash doesn't count' or 'Your animation show doesn't mean a thing'.”

Snyder praised Warner Bros. for his ability to stand his ground and forge his own path with the DCEU, unhindered by the inevitable comparisons to the Marvel Cinematic Universe created by Disney. He comments:

“I just love that they decided to embrace their personality […] I think there's always been this kind of criticism or in-between step. What is the intermediate step? You know, trying to be like Marvel? Trying to do what you want? Like, what are you going to do? But I think now it's kind of stuck in a very specific trajectory where, I think and hope, the idea is to be the filmmaker first... the filmmaker first and then the characters second. "

Snyder's films are by far the most interconnected of the DCEU's oeuvre to date, and it's clear from his stated intentions that he envisioned turning Justice League in a kind of mythology-filled multi-film epic — in the style of the MCU. However, since the release of the problematic Justice League, other directors such as James Wan (Aquaman) to david sandberg (Shazam!), just used the DCEU mold created by Snyder without much thought to fill the narrative gap between their films and the larger DCEU.
